people are saying do it scared, but you also gotta do it alone. you'll miss out on so much you want to do if you wait til someone will do it with you. do it scared and do it alone.

the fact that we only have “herculean task” and “sisyphean task” feels so limiting. so here’s a few more tasks for your repertoire

  • icarian task: when you have a task you know you’re going to fail at anyways, so why not have some fun with it before it all comes crashing down
  • cassandrean task: when you have to deal with people you KNOW won’t listen to you, despite having accurate information, and having to watch them fumble about when you told them the solution from the start (most often witnessed in customer service)

feel free to chime in i ran out of ideas much faster than i anticipated

In my experience, horror fans are by and large lovely people with a very healthy relationship to their genre of choice, but sometimes they fuck up and say something that in their ears sounds very affirmative of the movie of discussion and to everyone else sounds like the most sinister shit.

I mean the line that I think of first is “A kid dies in this movie.”

Which I suspect to horror fans is shorthand for “The director of this movie subverts horror tropes (wherein kids are usually immune to the monster/slasher/source of terror) to make something that is deliberately shocking. Seeing a child character die in this story is not a happy thing or a good thing, but for a horror story emphasizes that nobody is immune to the source of the terror, which makes the horror more serious and scarier.”

And to everybody else just sounds like “Oh this movie’s great! A kid dies in it!”

MegOP Week 2023 is Here: Dates and Prompts Now Available!

Hello everyone! Based on the results of the interest check poll, we picked the week and prompts that had the highest availability of participants possible.

MegOP Week 2023 will take place from Sunday, June 11th - Saturday, June 17th.

This event week celebrates the ship Megatron/Optimus Prime and all its variants. It is a voluntary, open-participation event for creators of all types and skill levels. You can complete prompts for as many days as you’d like, and you can choose which prompt you want to do for each day– one, the other, both, or even combining them into one entry! Participants are free to make as many entries as they want and interpret the prompts however they wish.

Speaking of, the prompts are as follows:

  • Day 1: Loyalty/Betrayal
  • Day 2: Private/Respect
  • Day 3: Marriage/Tears
  • Day 4: Sweet/Death
  • Day 5: Sharing a meal/Hands
  • Day 6: Atonement/Blood
  • Day 7: Freedom/Mercy

Please stay tuned to this blog, as we have our asks opened to answer any questions people have about the event! As June comes closer, we will post additional clarifications regarding rules, FAQs, etc. as they come up. :)

We hope that this year’s MegOP Week will be as fun as previous years! Good luck brainstorming and creating your entries!

one of my favorite story elements is "character way past their prime can still absolutely wreck you, leaving you to wonder just how powerful they used to be"

show, don't tell:

anticipation - bouncing legs - darting eyes - breathing deeply - useless / mindless tasks - eyes on the clock - checking and re-checking

frustration - grumbling - heavy footsteps - hot flush - narrowed eyes - pointing fingers - pacing / stomping

sadness - eyes filling up with tears - blinking quickly - hiccuped breaths - face turned away - red / burning cheeks - short sentences with gulps

happiness - smiling / cheeks hurting - animated - chest hurts from laughing - rapid movements - eye contact - quick speaking

boredom - complaining - sighing - grumbling - pacing - leg bouncing - picking at nails

fear - quick heartbeat - shaking / clammy hands - pinching self - tuck away - closing eyes - clenched hands

disappointment - no eye contact - hard swallow - clenched hands - tears, occasionally - mhm-hmm

tiredness - spacing out - eyes closing - nodding head absently - long sighs - no eye contact - grim smile

confidence - prolonged eye contact - appreciates instead of apologizing - active listening - shoulders back - micro reactions
