marine biology is so scary because it’s such a small field. i was giving a talk on cetaceans and afterward a woman approached me with her husband and she said, “you did very well. [husband’s name] actually pioneered the research and published the first paper on that. We were very impressed by you.”

Which is such a scientific interpretation/public education win I will cherish forever but also for the rest of my life any time I give a talk I will be haunted by the knowledge that the world’s leading expert who literally discovered/invented the topic might be in the room,

which is like, the opposite of what you’re supposed to do for stage fright. In fact I never used to experience stage fright but now I will.

There are limitations to the benefits of being a marine biologist

You know how there's those physical traits that you find attractive or think look cool, but you can't compliment people about that because those features aren't considered "conventionally attractive" and you know there's no way to point it out in any way that wouldn't feel like a cruel, sarcastic or backhanded compliment? Like when people have teeth like this:

Like the type that are set a bit above the other teeth, at an angle where they point outwards a little. I don't know if there's some actual medical reason why they need to be straightened or if they're painful if you don't get braces or something, but purely visually speaking I think those look cool as shit.

Like you've got fangs. Canines that put the 'canine' to a wolfish grin. That is the coolest shit ever and I can't tell someone that because they've been taught that having distinct teeth with character is wrong and bad. And I don't mean to be dramatic but I think that people who taught you to be self-conscious about having angled teeth should be ground to bonemeal and fed to cabbages.

May I add:

Too many I know, give more than asked and run themselves ragged.

I know you want to be good and kind to others and show your skills. But please don't. It just leads to more work because people think you can handle it, or uses you. If you can perform 100% of what is asked with 70% of your energy, do that and save the 30% for yourself.

Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!?  Libraries literally saved my life as a child!

Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!

I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!

As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)

New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!

Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.

Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.

Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.

The library was one of my favorite places to go as a kid and I still live to go and just. Sit and read. Or do homework. The university I’m at has a massive 8-story one I love to just wonder around in~ Great places

Libraries are amazing places, we need to protect them to ensure their continued existence.

I used to wander about the fiction section in my local library, and choose books with the most interesting titles - I discovered two amazing authors that way

If you feel disconnected from your local community & want to find ways to get involved, seriously consider spending some time at the library. Go to some events! Organize a reading group!

Support your libraries!

Read banned books!

People who don’t learn can be more easily controlled and told what to think!

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but intrusive thoughts are basically your brain’s (sometimes very upsetting) way of saying “If there were two guys on the moon and one of them killed the other with a rock would that be fucked up or what?”

I’ve personally found that adding the “would that be fucked or what?” part in myself really helps put the more disturbing thoughts we sometimes get into perspective. Helps me say “yeah thar sure would be fucked up” and move on with my day.

It’s not not a secret desire, it’s not something that only occurs to you because you’re a bad person. It’s just your brain deciding to process the fact that it knows an uncomfortable thing exists in the world by feeding it to you in an absurd “what if” with you as the main character.

Words cannot describe how happy I am that this resonated with so many people.

#something that really helps is i used to verbalize these thoughts in that way to my brother #like wed be cooking and id just go “i take your big chef knife and stab u. yeah?” and hed respond w smth like “i perfectly block. loser.”

This might be my favorite coping mechanism of this genre I've heard yet. Sibling goals.

Just a further little note.

I adore transition timelines from people who started around my age. They boost my hope and confidence so much.

Also love to see the representation of trans BIPOC, which is sorely missing from public perception.

And also. Y'know. Respectful appreciation.
