Flashover, Chapter 4

Bumping up to thrice weekly :)

“Rye, no, I’m dead on my feet,” Peeta groaned into his mobile as he flipped the sign on the shop door to “closed”. His brothers were always calling him last minute to watch their kids, and he usually loved it. But he’d been called to the station every night this week, a farmer’s ill-advised burn had gone out of control, a lightning strike fire had destroyed a cottage. The firies were always busy this time of year, but Peeta was sure it was getting worse. The summers were getting hotter. The dry season dryer. They were all stretched to the limit.

“You know I wouldn’t ask if there was any other choice,” Rye wheedled, and Peeta rolled his eyes. Rye never had another choice, because Peeta was always bailing him out. But how could he not? His nieces and nephews, both Rye’s kids and his eldest brother Brann’s, were amazing. “Stel’s got a new song she’s dying to play for you,” he said, the killing blow. Peeta could never say no to that little love.

“Fine,” Peeta said, “I’ll be home in ten.”

“We’re already in your driveway.”

Of course they were.

Happy Thursday!

Annie came just as Katniss was tucking the last of her clothes into the dresser, and Katniss’s melancholy and exhaustion lifted a little, seeing her old friend. Medical school classmates, they’d formed a deep bond sharing a crappy apartment near the hospital during residency. But like so many things in life, that bond had stretched thin when Annie moved to New South Wales four years earlier, following a man she’d fallen in love with, a man to whom she was now married.

The years melted away as Katniss embraced her friend. “I didn’t think I’d see you until Monday,” Katniss said, and Annie laughed.

Peeta Mellark has never subscribed to the idea of love at first sight.

It’s not really the kind of thing he’s ever been able to afford, given the inevitable disappointments that have consistently dogged him in his own dating life. The fact that his parents aren’t exactly the paragon of romance doesn’t help much, either.

But as Peeta stares wide-eyed at Katniss Everdeen, he wonders if there might be something to the notion after all. It’s a feeling he remembers from their initial meeting months ago; how struck he had been by her beauty, even through a computer screen, and how that feeling had only intensified the more that they talked. Seeing her in the flesh only confirms his suspicion that she is the single most impressive person he’s ever met. Even as this tiny, lovely woman silently rages at him with her hands flying at a furious pace, there is a piece of him that can’t help but be in complete awe of her. 

Or at least, that’s how he would be feeling if he didn’t find her so terrifying.

Too Familiar (Part 9)

Peeta threw his hands up in surrender. “Fine- you got me. If I’m being honest, I do need to run off some of that crap I just ate. And I get a better workout that way,” he added in a reasonable tone, “burns more calories and stuff. I try not to let my weight creep up on me during the off-season from wrestling. It’s easier to keep it off than try losing it again at the beginning of the season.”

“Seriously?” He had to be pulling her leg, right? “Do you have a frisbee in the trunk of your car or something so I can play catch with you?”

“Yeah, but I usually save that for when I take my dates to the dog park,” Peeta answered cheekily, flashing her a quick grin before backing out of his parking spot.

The Quiet Boy - Chapter 9 (preview)

I had hoped to post this chapter before Christmas but it wasn’t to be. Finally, and with the help of my dear friend and beta @sunsetsrmydreams​ , it’s ready and has just been posted on AO3. I hope you stop by and enjoy reading it. 

Here is a little snippet;

I subconsciously glide my fingers lightly over my lips thinking how just a few hours ago, they were pressed against another set of lips, locked together as we lavished each other with kisses under the twinkling stars. The taste of Katniss’ sweet and delicious mouth still lingers, even hours after she left our roof top sanctuary to go home.

And I miss her so much.

Working in the bakery kitchen has always been a great joy and comfort for me. Away from the constricting four walls of the attic, it’s a place where I feel comfortable enough to allow my creativity and imagination run wild. It was also the best place to see Katniss up close when she came to trade berries all those Sundays ago. But now things have changed and I’m finding today of all days difficult to deal with more than the nights she needs to stay home to care for her mother.

And because Katniss is in the woods alone with her friend Gale Hawthorne at this very moment.

Sometimes in just the right light you catch sight of what a person will be. Like once Katniss saw Gale standing tall in the wavering grass of the meadow, a bow in his strong, capable hands and she could see him as a father with his son perched on his shoulders. Or once she saw Prim with her face upturned, large clear eyes reflecting back the starry night sky and Katniss could see that one day she would be well and truly beautiful.

When We Were Young: Chapter 5 - “You Are A Terrible Liar, Katniss”

He took her hand, and she didn’t pull away. She closed her eyes and melted as his fingers intertwined with her own. That familiar feeling of his calloused hands meeting hers drained the last bits of her hesitation away. 

“I was so mad at you, Katniss. For years, I was so hurt and angry and confused. You said you would never abandon me and you did. I spent years running through every scenario in my head to find a reason for why you left. The only rational excuse I could think of was that you didn’t love me and you were too scared to look me in the eye while you broke my heart.”

No. It was my love for you that drove me away.

“But that isn’t true, is it?” She involuntarily shook her head. “What the hell am I doing, Katniss?” If he said her name like that one more time she was going to melt to the floor. When her name floated from his lips, it sounded like a sacred temple. Katniss never felt extraordinary or special, but with Peeta she no longer felt like a black hole. He made her into this bright star that twinkled in the sky. A star that would always guide him home. Home to her. 

“I was over it. Over you. I found someone. This amazing and kind and fearless woman. And I loved her. I was finally free of the burden of loving you. But when I saw you at the charity gala, it was like…it was like I blacked out. Seeing you…I got angry again. Because I realized that I was still waiting for you. I have been waiting for you all my life.”

Three of Hearts: Chapter 11

Katniss has never been very lucky in love or friendship. Her new friend in class and his romantic partner are determined to change her stance on both. But as friendships grow, Katniss struggles to navigate her complicated feelings for the pair.

Chapter 12 of Wildcat is done.  The backstory vignette is a long one this time, and it’s Prim’s POV.  I really enjoyed writing it!.  Read it on AO3 or fanfiction dot net. 

The Bet

Summary: When a sorority bet gets out of hand and becomes a campus wide sensation, Katniss and Peeta are both forced to deal with the aftermath.
