thankfully, their little girl had finally learned how to sleep through the night, and so, as it was, suji had been able to awaken to silence. she turned to look at jaebum beside her, sound asleep. her hand rested on his cheek as she leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips, wondering if it would wake him up. this was their last day before she would have to start her classes, and she wanted to make the most of it.
for the worst years of his life, jaebum had never once pictured that he’d be here. he’d never thought his heart would feel this calm, never thought that he’d be this satisfied, never thought he’d be so in love with the world. this world, his specific world, consists of family -- not the broken one back in new york but the one that travels with him, gives him the comfort that he’s never known elsewhere.
today they’re in paris, france -- thousands of miles from where he was splintered and cracked for so long, thousands of miles from where he was born, and thousands of miles of a new open landscape to explore with suji and aera. he wants to say he’s lucky but he doesn’t believe in luck, he believes that he survived and grew. he believes that he was simply, meant to be here.
he’s taken up being a freelance editor, working with directors and artists around the country. france has one of the best growing film industries and when suji says she wants to go to school, he thinks it’ll be a great opportunity for the both of them. it also allows him to work from home and keep an eye on their daughter who’s begun to toddle around the apartment with ease.
the sun is pouring in from the window, a sunlight that’s seemingly more romantic when they’re in one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the world. he feels a kiss to his lips and stirs, opening one eye and then another. he looks up to see suji, beautiful, and charming; she is what he’s always dreamed of and more. “hi,” he says with sleep coating his voice. a hand reaches out and touches her cheek lovingly. “did you sleep okay?”
