Shadowhunters can’t be cancelled because we still haven’t seen the scene where random girls ask to touch Jace’s “mango” in the grocery store.

Celaelin and Rosachaorian

Some Aelin discourse for you all at 3AM in California, because right as I was about to go to sleep, I saw a post about something that’s been irking me for a while now, and I couldn’t not talk about it. Also, a forewarning: I’ve just come off a performance high and I’m very tired, and therefore my filter is gone, so this may be a little bit of a b*tchy post that I refuse to take all the sass out of like I usually do, so I am so sorry if I personally offend anyone. Please know that I mean absolutely no harm, I’m just very tired and shaky (because I took way more albuterol than I should have WHEEEEE).

And like, obviously, if anyone is hurt by this post, please tell me, and I’ll probably message you a very long apology in the morning.

I may regret this or rewrite this in the morning. We shall see. Anyway.

I see an awful lot of people posting about the whole Aelin/Celaena/Lillian (she’s a part of this now? Wtf?) identity crisis, which like, ok, fine. I think we can all agree that Aelin has matured and changed somewhat since she took on the identity of Celaena. That’s good—that’s called character development (something a few YA authors need to learn about *coughs*), and we want that. We don’t want Celaena attempting to rule Terrasen. First of all, she’d refuse and it would never happen. Second of all…hello, human (fae?) disaster.

Celaena Sardothien: Human Disaster (Please get this reference).

I want to puke. The amount of reaching some people have to do to validate Rowaelin and the disgustingness of Rowan and Aelin as separate characters truly astounds me.

I really don’t like to hate but this was under the Sam Cortland tag that I follow, and considering that Sam and Chaol were Celaena’s only healthy relationships and the relationships that you know… had good development, I’m gonna make an exception.

I don’t care what you want to say to try to make Rowan’s and Aelin’s relationship seem like anything but one where there is mental and sometimes sexual abuse (I don’t even have to go there to debunk your ship, it’s awful enough without that argument) but please don’t talk down about Chaolena’s or Samlaena’s relationship in Sam’s tag.

It’s not Chaol’s fault that Celaena hid everything about her past from him. And when she’s Aelin, Chaol is naturally distrusting of her because of his prejudice against fae but… he shouldn’t have been made a villain in Queen of Bullshit for how he was grown up to see the fae.

I think that’s all, I’m getting a little tired of defending Chaol 24/7

P.S. Why are we still discussing Dorian as a love interest? He was friend-zoned in book 1 for fuck’s sake.

I thought I made this all pretty clear in my post, but evidently not.

Regarding Chaol and Celaena: I personally never liked that ship, so that’s on me. Nothing against Chaol. I just never liked it and a big part of that also rides on Celaena’s shoulders–I was just discussing the part that does ride on Chaol’s shoulders in this particular post. In fact, I’ve actually made an entire post defending Chaol and his character, so I’m not blindly against him either. I completely disagree with you that they had good development. I do not like that they excluded Dorian and ignored him whenever he approached them with what he was struggling with. That’s being a terrible friend, in my honest opinion, and he lost both of his to no fault of his own.

I don’t think Chaolaena was a healthy relationship. I don’t think it was abusive or toxic. But I don’t think either of them could really have grown within it. We really only saw their honeymoon phase, because ish happened and everything fell to pieces (again, not blaming Chaol!!). I was merely highlighting why I don’t think Chaol and Celaena would have worked out. And why I think saying Chaol was meant to be with Celaena and not Aelin is also fallacious.

Regarding Sam and Celaena: I can’t find a single place where I talked down Sam and Celaena’s relationship. I loved Sam and Celaena together. I do love Rowaelin, but if Rowan had never come into the picture, I would’ve been die hard shipping Sam and Celaena, even tho Sam is dead. So I’m not really sure where that came from.

You’re right, it’s not Chaol’s fault that Celaena lied. It’s also understandable that Celaena lied, especially in light of what we know about Arobynn, so don’t diminish her struggle with what we know is a very serious and dangerous matter. And to put this in the most delicate and respectful way I can, while also giving you an analogy: A Jew hiding in 1943 in Germany isn’t going to go around telling people that she’s Jewish. It’s lying, but I think we can say it’s for a fairly good reason. I personally don’t think Chaol was made the villain–I think both Aelin and Chaol treated each other like crap in Queen of Shadows, and I also empathize with both of them. I also think that sometimes you can temporarily hate someone you were once in love with, but I’m willing to bet you $100 that if one or the other of them were in real danger, the other would not hesitate to drop everything and run and help. I think that will be part of TOG6. There’s a big chance for a reconciliation arc.

I also never said it was 100% Chaol’s fault.

I’m not going to talk about Rowaelin, because you are clearly determined not to listen to me, and that’s your opinion. You have a right to it and I will not try to sway you.

The point of this post, though, isn’t to slam down any of these ships. They all have their merits and necessities. They are part of who Aelin is presently. My point is that there are reasons they didn’t work. That doesn’t make them any less valuable or important, but sometimes, relationships just don’t work. They don’t all end in nasty ways, in ended friendships and screaming and sabotage like YA might have you believe. Sometimes they just…fizzle. Or people realize they’re too different and they part ways amicably. There isn’t anything wrong with that.

P.S. The reason we still discuss Dorian is because (A) I was responding to a specific post that discussed Dorian and therefore I addressed it and (B) Because in the original manuscript, which I have read, Celaena and Dorian were endgame.

I respectfully disagree with you about Chaolena (and Rowaelin, but I’ve really never liked Rowan at all so I just don’t like talking about their relationship)

I think that Chaol was Celaena’s endgame, he just wasn’t Aelin’s. I can see no future where Chaol and Aelin work things out, I didn’t mean to imply that — but I think that for Celaena, Chaol was it ya know? I’ve reread their scenes in the first two books so many times and I just misssss them together. So if I come off as hateful, I’m just venting sorry.

It just felt like when SJM got to Heir of Fire, she just changed her mind. I had no doubts that Chaolena would work things through at the end of Crown of Midnight, but when I read HoF I’ll admit that it makes since that they won’t ever make things work between them. I know that Chaol will never fully be able to accept that she’s fae, but I don’t think that’s just about his prejudices. I think that it’s because in QoS, all Aelin, Aedion, and Rowan did was threaten Chaol with death when he asked important questions.

So I guess what I’m saying is that I get that she’s not meant to be with Chaol, I just don’t like HOW SJM went about ending their relationship… it felt very contrived and like Aelin was OOC when she was talking about how she felt for Chaol (and that has nothing to do with the fact that she was Celaena when she fell for him, that had no impact on how she felt for Sam, so don’t even start with that argument)

It just felt like a huge slap in the face and it was like SJM was telling me that I just imagined how they felt for each other and that I was delusional to ever think that they’d last.

So I’m not really hoping for a Chaol and Aelin reconciliation arc — fuck Aelin, he’s too good to be anything but an ally to you.

And I guess you didn’t really talk down Samlaena, I guess I just threw him in there because I thought there was too damn much Rowaelin in my Sam Cortland tag lol.

And lastly, about Dorian… if only that original manuscript was true. Because I can get behind Doraelin, no questions asked — Celaena friend-zoned him under completely different circumstances as a completely different character. I could definitely be open to them being together.

*whispers* just not Rowaelin please I beg you
