some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

Please don’t use AI image generators to make “fanart.” There is not an ethical generator yet, they are still built off of stolen assests. And *IF* you really must, please be upfront about it in the post itself.

Well I guess I’m going to talk about this a little bit more indepth, because I’m hoping the reason it’s being used in fandom right now is due to just simply not understanding what AI Image Generators do and how they are impacting us all currently, because AI Image Generation is theft.

So let’s discuss what AI Image Generators are (I’ll be referring to them as AI from this point on for brevity)– they’re a program that creates an image based on assets stored in the program’s database. You tell it to make an image with keywords and it pulls assets from its database they think fits. AI can actually be a really helpful tool, especially for artists, and I believe that was the original intention with at least some of the programs. HOWEVER.

Those assets in the database I mentioned earlier? A good portion of them are stolen. They are copyrighted works that were put into the database without the creator’s permission and certainly without compensation. A lot of this is because several generators pulled images from web searches (this is often called “scraping”), including private medical records because the program cannot recognize what is and isn’t legal to take, and clearly the humans behind it do not care.

There is currently not a generator that exists without stolen assets in its database. Yes, this means that every image created with AI has the potential to contain one or several stolen works (or someone’s private information).

As a society AI has greatly negatively impacted us. If you are not aware, the use of AI is one of the points for the ongoing strikes we’re seeing because studio and companies are looking for ways to bypass paying their employees for their work. They are trying to replace parts of the process with AI, and as we just discussed AI functions off of stolen assets, they are also exploiting all of the creators that were stolen from for these databases.

We’re already seeing the book industry cut out cover artists completely by using AI to generate images for book covers. Ubisoft is allegedly using AI voice and chat to replace voice actors and script writers. At this time using and especially sharing AI work promotes the program positively– even if that’s not your intention, even if all you really want to do is have some fun creating images, it is creating images with stolen work and it is promoting programs that function primarily off of theft. I am begging you as an artist and fellow creative, whose works are being stolen for AI and the program making it harder for me to work, to please reconsider using AI. Drawing is hard, it is a skill that takes time and patience to learn (and I am always learning). I understand that not everyone has the time to develop such a skill, and that’s okay, but please do not contribute to the theft of artists’ time and skill to use a generator so you don’t have to learn. It is not fair, it is not ethical, we’re already starting to see litigation because it isn’t legal, and what this is really telling artists is that we need to stop sharing what we create or risk being stolen from and exploited. If you have a favorite artist, if you like seeing what they make, please support them and not AI.

I did just over 10k in a single day for Nanowrimo 2006. Was trying to finish told kids if they let me be to finish, we'd order pizza. That worked, and yes I finished just over by a few hundred words. 😘

Synop:

LATE DECEMBER

CHAPTER 1

Winter chill nipped at flushed cheeks and bundled bodies of Juuban High’s senior class 3-1 as they stumbled from the karaoke parlor onto the snow dusted streets of Tokyo. Fresh flakes crowned their heads as they whooped and hollered, throats still raw from hours of singing, as they parted ways into the night. Next month were university entrance exams and shortly after that graduation, the idea tugged a bit at the back of Usagi Tsukino’s mind as she turned to say goodbye to her friends.

“Are you okay, Usagi-chan, are you sure you don’t want us to walk you home?” Naru Osaka ventured, noticing the swell of tears threatening her friend’s bright blue eyes.
