20, she/her, marauders all the way. A little bit of other HP stuff too here and there, but mostly marauders.

One of the things that piss me the most about the fandom view of Sirius is when he’s described as hating, despising or being an asshole to Peter before Azkaban

There’s no evidence of that (and I refuse to take “before Wormtail wets himself” as him being mean because it’s not a rude thing to say to a friend you’re close with and he uses the same tone he spoke to Prongs and later to Remus - it’s only Sirius being the tactful, humble and gentle person he his)

Likewise the harshness and hatred Sirius shows toward him in the Shrieking Shack totally make sense if you thing that Peter’s destroyed his brother’s, sister in law’s and his own lives, along with Remus’ and the ones of all the innocents killed by his double-crossing.

Yes, he does denigrate and offend him calling him a talentless and opportunistic tag-along, but he says this out of anger and pain. He says it because he loved Peter and felt betrayed. It wouldn’t hurt that much if he never care about him.

Despite the scarcity of the intersactions described in the books, however, we can actually see Sirius loving and caring for Peter as a friend.

Firstly he trust Peter instead of Dumbledore or Remus, (and we all know how strong Pads and Moony’s bond was is , wheather you believe they’re totally gay for each other or not) with something he valued more than his own life. It never occurred to him that Peter could betray them. Never even had a sparkle of doubt (otherwise he wouldn’t have risk the Potters’ life)

It’s also said that he checked on Peter the night the Potters died, he made sure he was safe. Was it an habitual routine, or did he remember the casual mention of how distressed and fed up poor Wormy was in Lily’s letter?? Either way, it shows affection and concern toward him.

Also I find interesting that Sirius is said to be scared twice in the books: when James, Lily, Harry and potentially Peter are in danger and when he’s about to die (we’re coming back to this one later).

Later, when Pettigrew, being the asshole he is, blames Padfoot and then justifies himself, Sirius yells at him. And the words he says express mostly anger, disappointment and disbelieve, almost. They show us how it hurts Sirius that his friend, whom he cared about and trusted and loved so much is not the person he thought he was and betrayed him.

Peter should have died for them, as the Marauders - Sirius included - would have died for him. Now, we all know about Pads’ nobility and bravery, but dying for someone is NOT something you do lightly (he himself is said to be scared of death, as anticipated) yet Sirius doesn’t even stop to think if he would have die for Peter, because of course he would have.

Now last thing I can think of (it’s late at night/early in the morning here, I should definitly write this stuff in a different time) is that when Peter starts begging for his life, he adresses Sirius first, even before any of the kids (they’re just kids, they musy have mercy, or at least be easier to manipulate, after all Harry didn’t find it in him to kill Black when he thought he was guilty) or Remus, the only one who could hold back and balance Sirius’ fury.

Because Sirius’d never kill nor hurt a friend on purpose, unless he thought he was a spy at least, and he’s Peter, a Marauder, Sirius’ friend -except he’s not anymore.

Of course you’re entitled to have your own opionion, but I just feel it’s so out of the character for someone like Sirius, whose defining trait is his loyalty

This is so perfect @winterlustwanderer !!!!!!!

One minute after Sirius dies and Dumbledore is like Harry Harry come on think about it. Sirius was such a jerk. He was so mean to that one house elf who he grew up with in an abusive household. And he was unhappy and bitter about being locked up Harry he was so unreasonable. Unlike me who is purposely vague about my past so that my criticisms of Sirius’ character don’t come off as massively hypocritical and pathetic. Harry my boy he was so flawed stopped crying’

Sirius who was mean to 1 (ONE) house elf who is obviously linked negatively to his abusive past and is actively continuing that cycle despite his mothers death, a painful reminder VS Dumbledore who literally was part of a plot to rule over muggles because he thought himself superior alongside Grindelwald.

Dumbledore obviously changed his mind but there’s an important distinction between Dumbledore and Sirius. Sirius wasn’t treating Kreacher poorly because he thought lowly of house elves or thought himself better. It was just Kreacher because Kreacher was apart of the childhood he hated. And even while his mother is in the grave, Kreacher is still a mouth piece for her abuse. And Sirius was shut off from important development time when he was tossed in prison. And while Dumbledore was pointing out this flaw that was more sad than damning, he either forgets or purposely avoids mentioning that Sirius illegally went through the incredibly tricky process of becoming an animagus soley so he could support and help his marginalised friend at age 15. So fuck you Dumbledore.

Give Harry to me, Hagrid, I’m his godfather, I’ll look after him.

Ah, let me count the ways in which fandom interpretation of Sirius Black infuriates me. One day, I’ll write an essay, but as I don’t currently have the time to pen a thousand-page epic -

This is literally the moment that possibly defines Sirius the most, and it’s the one that everyone forgets.

Everyone knows the story - Sirius arrived at Godric’s Hollow, saw the Potters’ bodies, and tore after Peter Pettigrew in a blind, thoughtless, reckless rage.

Um, except he didn’t.

He tried to take care of Harry. He tried to get Hagrid to give Harry to him, and when Hagrid refused, he tried to argue.

What, you think he was planning to tear after Peter with Harry tucked under one arm? Of fucking course not. It didn’t change that he wanted to kill Peter, that he probably would be happy to find and kill him later - but he wasn’t planning to murder anyone, to throw his life away, to even sit in a dark corner and drink himself to death while holding a goddamn baby.

This is Sirius’s godson, the person he promised his dead best friend he’d protect, and whom he now loved more than anyone alive. He’s asking for the kid so he can take the kid, and that means devoting himself to a lifetime of raising, nurturing, being patient, being parently, changing nappies and nursing fevers and a million other VERY. RESPONSIBLE. THINGS.

Do we know how good Sirius would have been at doing that? Hell no.

But what we do know is the most important thing - that he was willing to try.

Hagrid cites Dumbledore’s orders and won’t give Harry up.

So it’s really only once everything is really gone - that Sirius’s responsibilities and attachments are nearly all truly severed - that he decides there’s nothing else to do but go after Peter.

I’m sorry but… @gallifrey1sburning this was too good to leave in the notes. Literally this:

For the few months that Sirius left the UK to go somewhere tropical, where did he go? He was able to eat well and had his hair cut and clearly just got to live for five minutes. Did he find someone who lovingly cut his hair?? A muggle who took in a starving man and his weird horse and brought him back to health only to find that one day he had simply disappeared and never saw him again???? A muggle who hoped he finally found peace ??? A muggle who had no idea that he died only a couple years later?? Hello????

Sirius Black managed to enchant a motorcycle to fly at the age of twenty.

Managed to become an animagus at the age of fifteen.

Managed to plot an unplottable building which also kept track of every person, polyjuiced or otherwise in the said building.

Managed to enchant two mirrors to face time with his best friend and developed an amazing form of communication.

Was touted as one of the most brilliant students by two supremely intelligent professors.

Joined the not-so-secret society to fight the most evil Dark Lord of all times at the age of eighteen.

Became the bait for his best friend and his family by pretending to be the secret keeper even though he knew all the death eaters will target him for information.

Stayed sane after twelve years of Azkaban.

Stayed sane after sixteen years of Walburga Black.

Rejoined the not-so-secret society even after he had been wronged by all its members and was mocked and belittled by many of the members.

Tried to protect his godson from the moment he was born. His last conversation with Harry was asking him to leave and be safe.

He was the only adult Harry could completely rely on and was still there for Harry even with his shit mental health.

Defeated death eaters in the DoM even though he was years out of practice.

But yeah, sure, Sirius was a dumb jock with no skills or academic prowess or sensitivity. He was, for sure, a bad influence on Harry compared to the other amazing role models Harry had.

We don’t talk enough about how every institution Sirius should have been able to put his trust in betrayed him at some point. From his parents to his friends, to the light side he left everything for, to the dark side he would give anything not to be in.

The greatest irony of Sirius, is that for a person who is literally distinguished by his loyalty, a character who let himself be tortured to the brink in Wizarding hell for twelve years simply because he trusted the wrong person, a person whose animagus is literally a dog, is this: He would die, die after being kept in a cage at the urging of Albus Dumbledore and the Order he sacrificed his family for and then murdered by that very family itself. That he’d fall only after he has been utterly ruined by everyone he ever loved, everyone who he should have been able to trust, down to his house elf.

Sirius was 21 years old and lost his entire twenties to Azkaban because even Dumbledore who would bat for reformed Death Eaters and students rearing murderous spiders in his school wouldn’t consider giving him so much as a trial.

Friendly reminder that he wasn’t just locked up in a cell and left there, this was his state of affairs:

“…. he was one of the most heavily guarded in the place, you know. Dementors outside his door day and night.”

And we can infer, considering that he was a barely legal soldier raised in an abusive household that that was not a cakewalk. Dementors are terrifying torture machines even for the well adjusted let alone the traumatised.

It also speaks a lot about why he gives himself to James with such abandon and why no one else will ever hold that position in Sirius’ life. James is the only person to ever to take that love, that trust, that faith and to nurture it, protect it, to worship it. He’s Sirius’ guardian and Sirius’ salvation and Sirius’ font of security. Is it truly such a surprise that Sirius never quite recovers from his death? With James gone, where else could he go?

Sirius was the Brightest Star in the sky and apparently the only thing Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix could agree upon is snuffing out his light.

Today I’m crying about how Sirius: Synonymous with freedom in who he is and how he is, for all his immense beauty and messy contradictions and ferocious devotion, how he’s the crack of thunder and the abandon of waves breaking against shore, for how he’s the north star of lost souls

oh, how terribly tragic it is that someone like that could even spend a quarter of their life in chains, how someone like that could ever be drained of their light when lesser men live and thrive

The scene at the start of Prisoner of Azkaban in which Harry accidentally summons the Knight Bus after seeing Padfoot never fails to make me incredibly sad when I think about it. Sirius didn't even want to talk to Harry or try convincing him of his innocence, he just wanted to see him. Sirius had so many chances to try and convince Harry of his innocence, but all he wanted to do was kill Pettigrew and ensure Harry's safety. Him roaming Little Whinging, him hiding under the Quidditch Pitch bleachers during Gryffindor's matches, all he wanted to do was see Harry. He loves Harry so much, my heart aches.
