My Favorite Papa Joel Moments (Pt. 7):

🦠 My feeling about Joel and Ellie’s violence during the Winter episode is this; it was to show how similar they are, a harsh representation of why they are so compatible. It’s easy to forget when we’ve seen Joel sob, beg, smile, laugh and be a genuine cinnamon roll that he is still a highly dangerous man. We get glimpses in prior episodes but it’s not till episode 8 we truly understand what Joel is capable of…Torture, ruthlessness and murder. This behavior is what makes him not answer Ellie’s questions, this is why Tommy left, this is why he had a reputation in Boston. And from the jump Ellie admired him for it. So it makes sense that she becomes just like her surrogate father, carnal and ruthless, and that their reactions to the situation are the same. They are willing to do anything to get back to each other, even if it’s brutal murder.

🦠 You can read so much on Joel’s face when he sees the blood trail through the resort and finds Ellie’s backpack. To me it was the scariest he’s looked so far. He is eerily still, quiet and his eyes are flat—we’re still reeling from the heartless violence he displayed and know he’s terrified to his core, but all we see is him cold.

🦠 When Joel finally finds Ellie, and grabs her from behind its so heartbreaking how scared he sounds. The moment she screams and thrashes in his grip he lets out these fragile, horrified grunts. Like why is she so scared of me? What happened? Is she hurt? Is she dying? He knows nothing except that his usually brazen, tough little girl is in pieces. That first “Look” he utters is so so heartbroken and traumatized. I think that’s what killed him inside initially; her being afraid of him…and let me tell you, as a parent, that is the worst feeling you can experience.

🦠The way Joel speaks to Ellie is so soft you almost can’t hear it and it’s such a contrast to the violence he displayed. But it’s how when he gently cups her face in his hands and looks at her, really looks, deep into her eyes that tore me apart. The moment they look on one another both Joel and Ellie ease their tight postures and go still. The relief is palpable. Joel is relived she’s alive and Ellie is relived she’s not alone. The way Joel says “It’s me” like he knows his presence will be enough to comfort her… he was shockingly sure of himself as a father figure here. I’m telling you, if you read my pt. 6 post, he’s let all his walls crumble and is embracing his father hood full force. This act is the first thing he does as Ellie’s father; he tells her it’s ok (in that ridiculously sweet southern drawl), holds her close and calls her ‘baby girl’. The bond between them is sealed forever. I love when Joel closes his eyes and says ‘I got you’ he’s letting fatherhood settle into himself, like it was meant to be there. This is a man whose life’s purpose came back into his body after being sealed away for 20 years. And that’s the show in one interaction, folks! Well I hope you’re all are ready for the finale Sunday cause I’m sure not!! 😩 (don’t forget to read my finale Pt. 8 analysis here)

sorry what’d you say? i was thinking about how peeta had loved katniss from afar for years before he had to make his peace with dying in the same games that he hoped she would win, became gravely ill in those games and wound up under her care, was kissed by the girl he loved so much in front of the entire nation, nearly died with her or for her countless times, committed to a suicide pact with her in a bid for freedom one way or the other, only to find out that her feelings for him were lukewarm at best and really, she was just trying to help them both survive more than anything. and even then, he would do anything for her without expectation of return. he would gather the kindle for her revolution, work to ensure her safety in their second games, and then claw his way back from brainwashed and tortured hell at her request, and still he expects nothing from her because he has always, from the very beginning, understood what love really means

Personally, it's always a bit wild to me to see commentators interact with the Hunger Games franchise as if Collins were writing science fiction stories instead of essays with faces. She's just not that interested in fleshing out side characters or digging into the details of the worldbuilding. These characters are concepts and symbols before they're people. There's an almost mathematical precision to who and what she explores and how deeply she does it. This is a step or two away from pure allegory. If she were writing a couple of centuries ago, she'd have named her characters things like Innocence and Anger and Watch-Carefully-Your-Soul-Lest-Ye-Be-Damned, but since she's writing for modern audiences, she has to settle for puns and allusions. If she has another essay to write, she'll assign some faces to it; she's not going to look into backstories or other eras just for the sake of storytelling, and it's not a failing as a writer that she doesn't.

what makes Snow such a formidable villain within THG universe is that nothing he does was set in stone. there was no sense of inevitability about his actions and his brutality. Snow had enough perspective of poverty, capital cruelty, district hunger and not to mention his own arena experience’ and yet he actively chose at every moment to stray from natural goodness. its even more terrifying in the sense that he had the ability to care. Snow is not a mindless sociopath, he displays feelings to others such as sejanus, lucy grey and tigris but ultimately he will always choose himself. his ability to betray those he cared about in order yo advance himself makes him so much more than the stereotypical villain who is forced into his actions.

Sweet Nothing

Pairing: Peeta Mellark x Reader

Synopsis: you and Peeta have an honest conversation after he defends Gale at the whipping post

You looked over your shoulder when you heard your front door open and saw Peeta with a loaf of bread. He saw that your hand was on Gales back and his jaw tightened but he didn’t say anything about it.

“Hey, Peet.” You said through a yawn. He blushed at the nickname as he walked further into your house.

“Hey. Have you been there all night?”

“Yeah. In case he woke up.” You yawned again and nodded towards Gale.

“Did he?”

“No. He’s still pretty knocked out from whatever Prim gave him.”

“You should go get some sleep. I’ll stay with him.” Peeta offered as he set the bread down.

hi can we just talk about how much finnick protected peeta? like not just in the games but after?!?!! he was the only one to not raise his gun at peeta, who stepped forward and tried to help him. he reassured him it was okay to ask questions when he needed to. he ran lines with him, told him he had this. even when he killed someone on their squad and was going after katniss finnick didn’t become violent with him. just retrained him and tried to calm him down, literally telling peeta i got you. and the line “peeta just tuck in there” I’M SCREAMING

Sometimes I think about how Peeta recognized that Katniss had chosen Gale after his whipping, and never brought it up to her. Never pressured her about what that meant for them. Never made her feel guilty or held the threat of the Capitol to keep up their romance over her. And instead he kept up the act when he needed to in front of Peacekeepers and cameras, and otherwise took care of her and kept her company when she couldn't walk and helped her on a family project and brought her cheese buns. And then I cry.
