There’s a great scene at the end of Unforgiven, when Gene Hackman is lying on the ground, bleeding, and Clint Eastwood is standing over him, about to kill him. Anyway, Hackman says, “I don’t deserve this. To die like this? I was building a house. I don’t deserve this.”
And Eastwood replies, “Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.”
If you can’t convince yourself you deserve the good things in life, that’s fine. But at least convince yourself to go for them anyway.
Because “deserve” has got nothing to do with it.
To repost one of my favorite Le Guin quotes
