This felt bad. Hopper said not to let anyone in, ever. But Hopper had been gone for hours, and he was never back before the sun went down. That wasn’t for a while. And this was a kid. If he was trouble, Eleven could probably fight him.
She unlocked the window and opened it without touching it, sliding it open enough that the boy could fit through. Her eyes were still distrustful as she stepped back, but curious at the same time.

Huh. That was strange. The window opened, but she wasn’t near it. Peter checked above him as he floated through, just to make sure there really wasn’t someone else there, but there was no one. Oh, well. He wouldn’t dwell on it; he rarely dwelled on anything. His first order of business was to fly up to the loft, to investigate it and to get a better idea of the layout, and then he drifted to the floor near to the girl. “Why do you live so far in the woods?”

The thing was, she really wanted to set him on fire. That’s what a demon should do, after all. But he was a kid and Mic felt weird about killing a kid, even an exceptionally annoying one.
So instead, she held up her other hand and stopped him mid-flight. Telekinesis wasn’t her strong suit but she could stop him for a bit at least.

Peter was unused to being held in place in general, and much more so while he was in the air. Normally, he was nigh untouchable when he was flying, unless nets or hooks were involved. But now, there was nothing holding him, but he was still stuck fast--it was unsettling, to say the least. He squirmed, trying to break free in any direction. Finally, since he could still move within the space he was frozen in, he settled for throwing his knife at her instead.

This was the last thing he’d expected to find when he stepped into the shop, and Aziraphale had seen a great deal of strange things in his time. The boy reminded him of Adam in a way that made Aziraphale distinctly uncomfortable. “Hey!” he called out, his voice hitching slightly as he struggled to keep from sounding too alarmed, too frustrated. “Young man, you need to get down from there.”

Peter looked down at him with obvious disdain, shutting the book in his hands with a loud sound and tossing it carelessly aside with the others he had with him on his perch. He already didn’t like when adults tried to tell him anything, but that was just rude. “I am not a young man,” Peter said sternly. “I’m a boy, and I’m staying up here.”

“You lie a lot?” She could only assume he did. That meant she’d have to be very, very careful when she was talking to him. Eleven liked to think she could tell, but if he practiced a lot, maybe not.

“What? No, I never lie,” Greed scoffed. He did, to his credit, add a moment later, “But I guess you wouldn’t know that unless you knew me, huh? Well, the fact is, I don’t. I don’t have to.”

“See? All good,” Mic said as she paid. The cashier started to put the box of frozen waffles into the bag but she reached out and pushed the box back towards the girl. She had a feeling that anything else would have caused a problem. Once the change was back in her hands, she gestured to the girl.
“Come on, let’s go.”

With the box in hand, Eleven followed the woman out--and kept following her. She didn’t really know what else to do, or where else to go, but the woman had helped, and now that she had food without having to run or use her powers to get it, she had more time on her hands anyway.

“Oh, she’s not…” Klaus checked the date on the paper. “She was away when we took this. Vanya was the only one without powers, so she didn’t do superhero stuff. Hargreeves treated her like shit for it. Actually…”
He didn’t have to use his powers to find this item; it was right on the coffee table underneath some esoteric dance magazine he couldn’t remember subscribing to. A hardcover book, still very new-looking, though a bit dog-eared in places. He flipped the book over, revealing the short-haired woman on the back. “This is her. She wrote a book about it. Pretty sure Hargreeves censored the hell out of it, but…” Klaus snorted slightly when he remembered what she’d written about him. Cruel had been used. She wasn’t wrong. He’d been a shithead as a teenager. Still kind of was, when the mood arose. “Censored. That means he had the publisher take out parts that made him look really bad.”

To Eleven, that sort of sounded like it meant Vanya was free, if she didn’t have to do things and could tell people about it, but if their father had been awful to her like he’d been awful to Klaus, it wasn’t quite freedom at all. “Censored,” she repeated carefully. “It’s...like lying? Keeping secrets?”

“I’ve heard that one before.” Crowley was more mindful of his speed than usual. There was too much rubbish lying around to be reckless. Not that he’d ever been reckless before, per say. Just fast. Aziraphale would probably argue otherwise, if he were here. “I don’t judge. I’d probably be one too if I hadn’t met Him personally. And the offspring.”

“I’ll take your word on that,” said Hal, with a snort that implied he would do no such thing. “Call me a cynic, but after you find out your whole world is literally a lie, and that you were created in a vat by a team of scientists, religion doesn’t seem that appealing. It didn’t before, either,” he added with a shrug. “But waking up to this kind of adds a whole other level.”

Isaac still believed, both in his god and in a great plan, and Hal would put money on Champagne still having some little light on, but those two hardly constituted a compelling argument of rationality as far as he was concerned.

“Ah, yes, actually, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t be wise of me to demonstrate. Someone always notices and I’d really rather not have to deal with conspiracy theorists again.” That had been an interesting summer. He’d been more concerned with keeping a low profile after the whole apocalypse thing. Better to blend in regardless of what spheres he was travelling in.

“That makes sense.” Besides, Noah thought he could almost see them anyway. Or, at least, the shape of them, the empty space where they could be, like a shimmer in the air that disappears when you look for it. He would probably miss it entirely if he were anywhere else. “So...you just...own a bookshop? Do a lot of angels own bookshops? Oh! Do you have any books about Glendower?”

Avatar
“Tests…on me? No, it’s, uh…”
He looked a lot smaller in that second–six foot four and visibly trying to shrink, shoulders hunching, hands clasped on the fingers knotting together anxiously.
“Someone…gave me something when I was a baby. To make me like this. And for a while, I had to…keep taking the stuff to make my powers work, but then something happened and now I can…do it all the time. It wasn’t scientists, though. It was…”
Demons.
“Bad people.”

That didn’t sound anything like what happened to her. At least, she didn’t think that was what happened. Nothing was given to her. As far as she knew, she had always had her powers. Papa just wanted to use them. Still, she wanted to be sure it wasn’t the same. “Hawkins?”

“I should preface by saying if you are, you wouldn’t be the first I’ve met. And if you are, I won’t be scared…” Jintan scratched his head, bit his lip, anything to create some space between the silence and the question that would soon follow. “If you’re dead, that is.”

“Oh.” He was right about the shape of the question, and his smile faded, but only slightly. Noah shrugged again. “Yeah, I am. I’m glad you’re not scared. It’s a scary kind of thing, isn’t it? For most people, I mean.”
