Another Fun Fact: Cheetahs are incredibly nervous animals. One of the (many) reason’s they’re going extinct is that cheetahs are so sensitive and nervous, some of them are literally too nervous to breed. Others will breed, but stress themselves out so much, they’ll lose their cubs. So zoos with breeding programs had to figure out how to make cheetahs comfortable enough to first of all, get laid and secondly - not spazz themselves into miscarrying. So what’d they do? They gave the cheetah’s their very own Service Dogs! The dogs make them feel safe, protected and secure!

Also! Cheetahs are not in fact classified as big cats, they are simply very large lesser cats, due to the fact that they purr, meow, chirp, and cannot roar. Also many cheetahs have learned to recognize wildlife photographers are friends and not foes, so they will just come up to people and be friendly occasionally as pictured at the top of the chain. Some will even leave their Cubs with photographers to look after while they hunt. So. Yeah. Cheetahs are great
this works because cheetahs are actually fairly social animals, and they look to members of their group for context on how worried they should be about any given Situation. but since cheetahs are also nervous social animals, they can work each other into an anxiety spiral pretty easily over things like “being in an enclosed habitat” and “there’s a guy over there”.
so by introducing a dog as a member of the group, the cheetahs will now look to the dog for context clues on how worried they should be! and the dog Is Not Worried At All, Thanks, so the cheetahs think everything must be chill even if they were personally unsure about it, and they stop being so freaked out about literally everything.

So many people have wetlands in their yards and don't even know! "This spot in my yard is always soggy and wet! How do I fix it?"
They will of course tell you to install a French drain. DO NOT DO IT! Plant Wetland plants and allow it to helpfully absorb puddles of heavy rain and give you the gift of beauty!
It makes me so sad how many wetlands were destroyed.
And the wetlands remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it as peat! We need more of them to mitigate climate change!

In NJ we have the Pinelands Commission, which helps preserve our Pine Barrens and Wetlands :) You can’t build within 300/350 feet of a wetland barrier, but you can have them on your property and take care of them. Very cool stuff, and very cheap land.

Men will never get how exhausting it is and how it will really fuck you up if people just don’t believe you.
And not even just with the big stuff like rape and sexual assault, no that’s a whole other conversation I’m talking about just growing up and having everything you’re doing questioned.
I have a bachelors in English lit, but if I speak to any man about literature he will always think he knows more than me, even though all his interpretations are spoon fed from high school.
I worked as tech support for a company once and had a random business guy I had to help question everything I was doing despite it being a simple computer set up and something I had done a hundred times over.
Hell I can’t even talk about my own goddamn reality without men feeling a need to argue with me because they CLEARLY understand better.
And you know what? I’m aware of all of this now, and I’m fighting all this now, but an entire life of never being taken seriously, of always being second guessed has absolutely nuked my confidence. I struggle with basic shit because I feel the need to double check myself now because when I was young, I was never allowed to be right even if I was.
I mean hell all radfems have seen this in political circles. We have stats for days, studies to back us up, historic and scientific data, but a man saying anything will always be regarded as more important.
And men will never understand just how much that can fuck you up.
As always, I recommend the short documentary White Shamans and Plastic Medicine Men (available on youtube). It’s a couple decades old, but still a great look into the appropriation of indigenous spirituality and how even the most sincere attempts at respecting stolen practices are still appropriation and still do tangible harm to indigenous communities.
I realized I never posted these here on tumblr! 2020 did unspeakable things to my mind and body…I staggered away from lockdown with a whole pitch of how I would make an animated Cats adaptation. I got the whole thing up here *taps skull*—it would be Very Good. I can’t think about it too much lest I awaken my sleeping obsession…still want to finish Old Deut and Macavity one of these days.

I am a homesteader and aspiring farmer!! I plan to open a farm in the next 7-10 years. Right now I have chickens and vegetables, and volunteer twice a week at my local organic farm :) I plan to keep goats, two dairy cows, two horses, a donkey, sheep, chickens and ducks, meat quail, angus steer, and alpacas - reindeer if I end up farming in PA, POSSIBLY meat pigs though they scare me hehe :)

Why this is so important:
Typical commercial white paint gets warmer rather than cooler when subjected to sunlight or other light sources. Paints on the market that are designed to reject heat reflect only 80% to 90% of sunlight and can’t make surfaces cooler than their surroundings.
In comparison, the world’s whitest paint reflects 98.1% of solar heat away from its surface.
Because the paint absorbs less heat from the sun than it emits, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without consuming power.
Using this formulation to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet could result in a cooling power of 10 kilowatts, more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses. At SXSW, researchers demonstrated the effects of the difference with two model barns sitting under direct halogen lights: one painted in commercial paint and one in Purdue’s white paint. Judges were able to compare thermometers reading the barns’ internal temperatures and to feel the difference in the roofs. The barn painted in Purdue’s technology consistently held cooler internal temperatures by 8-10 degrees Fahrenheit. The “whitest white” barn roof was also much cooler to the touch, prompting many surprised responses from judges and viewers.
While Ruan’s original paint formula is massively efficient, it required a layer 0.4 millimeters thick to achieve subambient radiant cooling. The newer, thinner formulation can achieve similar cooling with a layer just 0.15 millimeters thick.
The new paint also incorporates voids of air, which make it highly porous. This lower density, together with the thinness, provides another huge benefit: reduced weight. The newer paint weighs 80% less than the original paint yet achieves nearly identical solar reflectance – 97.9%, compared to the original formula’s 98.1%.
This could be an important piece in fighting global warming. Imagine if the city of New York City repainted all the skyscraper roofs with a paint that cools down buildings.
