20% SHOP SALE for Sammy!

Sammy needs vet care again (read more on my pet blog here), this time there's something in his eye that needs to be looked at asap. We have an appointment later today and that alone will likely be at least 150-250€ according to the clinic.

I still haven't recovered at all from his previous vet visits from December-February so I'm doing a 20% OFF EVERYTHING in my shop on js-tierportraits! The sale will run at least until April 30 but I may extend it if necessary.

If you're not interested to get art you can also help by sharing this post and donating to/ sharing Sammy's GoFundMe here. I will update the latter with the new info after the appointment when I know more.

Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏

some of my favourite vídeo essays about art history:

whose migrant mother was this? the story of the native american woman who became the face of the 1930s depression (and got almost nothing for it)

bauhaus design is everywhere, but its roots are political how even a simple choice between what font to use can be a political act

edvard munch: what a cigarette means munch + tobacco = art? (yes we’re still on the topic of art as a political weapon)

art that was never finished how great masters sometimes even didn’t finish stuff. also! the history behind the colour aquamarine

fka twigs on mary magdalene (if you like asmr you’re gonna love this)

having a coke with frank ohara (technically not art history but this video is too good for me not to mention)

video postcard: woman at her toilette a quick dive into my favourite painting of woman impressionist berthe morisot

this documentary about georgia o´keeffe (that ive seen about 10 times)

david hockney on vincent van gogh on love of nature, beauty, attention, and the art of looking (essentially a mary oliver poem in interview format!!!!)

dante and the invention of hell short film about centuries of art depicting dante’s circles of hell, my favourite works possibly ever made were inspired by his writing (sky arts documentary so it’s not your standard v. essay)

who’s afraid of modern art: vandalism, video games, and fascism about the meaning of modern art and the publics response to it, as well as a political campaign to eradicate it or moreso make an example of the so-called ‘undesirable’ nature of their art

how to make communist art on the future prospects of art for art’s sake and creativity outside of capitalist restraints

Brigsby Bear, nostalgia culture and millennial optimism a little off topic but an essay about a film that questions our need to attach our identities to our past and our childhoods in particular, questionning whether we should put our faith into recreating our old loves or creating new ones - i think its relevant based on the films perspective on art

museum theft PLEASE watch this introduction if nothing else today, it will make you cling to the edge of your seat; truly a masterpiece

Completed Groenendael piece! :) This actually has been sitting in my files for a while, but I still can't tell if overall I'm satisfied with it or not, so I'm just going to post it now without regards to that.

At some point there will be a bookmark version of this, which likely will take some time until it's possible for me to do, but feel free to keep an eye out if you might be interested to get one.

Spent the last 2 days programming a cute lil website for my kinda-sorta-comic projects, just because I feel it could help with inspiration. Which I think it DOES, judging from what's going on in my head rn, but now there are more important things I have to do so it's a bit of a waste to have to let all of this potential-idea energy go 😂 Hopefully it'll work in the future without me first spending 2 days programming stuff tho lol.

I will forever respect Animorphs for tricking kids who are just really into animals to read a book series by going “Hey you, you daydream about what it’s like to be a dolphin or a bird or a wolf? Have I got a book for you!” and then slowly radicalizing them with 50+ books of “There are no winners in war. Whatever ‘victory’ you perceive comes at the cost of sacrificing your own morals and killing the part of you that is human. In the end you will resort to murder, torture and war crimes and the knowledge of what you have done will haunt you for as long as you live.”

I also respect the author for putting them all online for free

Why not find out they’re all online for free

genuinely mystified by the kind of person that would produce this image and not realize "oh, I'm being fucking ridiculous"

personally, when I see someone press a heart-shaped button to denote that They Like My Work, the conclusion I draw is that They Like My Work. but perhaps I'm the crazy one, and I should instead be taking it as one step above "shooting me three times in the head."

listen. I get it. I am also Out Here, chronically unemployed and trying to make ends meet by monetizing my music. I also get frustrated and demoralized when something I worked hard on fails to gain traction.

that being said:

this attitude can only ever corrode your connection to your own work. "not good enough to bring me more business" - I'm sorry, but strangers on social media do not owe you free marketing. meanwhile, what you call "only a bookmark" signifies that your work appealed to them, even if they didn't reblog it. isn't that the fucking point of doing any of this? to make someone else's day a little richer, or to make them feel seen?

to put it in simpler terms:

if you consider someone liking your work "meaningless," why are you making art in the first place?
