When Jeongin accidentally ate the last of their food rations, Chan didn’t get mad. He only expressed his disappointment in the youngest member of the crew before telling Jisung to steer the ship towards the nearest port to restock; they had a little extra cash from their previous raid to spend anyway.

When Minho drunkenly spilled about their next target in a bar filled to the brim with treasure-seeking pirates like himself, Chan didn’t get mad. He only sighed, quietly making his way back to the map he had built with Jisung, the crew’s navigator, to mark a big red ‘X’ over what once was their target. Jisung then proceeded to give Minho a piece of his mind when the latter arrived back to the ship, burdened with a terrible migraine, an angry Jisung, and a disappointed captain.

Chan still didn’t get mad when Changbin, in a fit of rage over an apparent spew over the captain’s ability to direct his crew, sliced off the arms of one of their allies, effectively initiating a war between the crews. It ended in terrible bloodshed; multiple casualties on both ends and a few of Chan’s key crew members badly injured with a frantic Woojin pacing back and forth between patients. They had to replace many of the planks in the ship, for they had been stained with far too much blood to simply wash out; it left them stranded on land for days and drained of gold for weeks until they could pinpoint their next raid for money. And yet, he only expressed gratitude towards Changbin, his first mate, mainly because the other crew was pretty shitty anyway and he’s been waiting all this time for a reason to cut off their allyship.

But when he sees you, all bloodied, beaten, and tied up to the mast of their enemy’s ship like some sort of sick sacrifice—that’s what makes his blood boil.

jongin was warm.

yes, very warm.

there’s something about his smile that reminded you of the sun on a cloudy day, its rays of warmth shining through the white puffs in the sky to delicately kiss your skin, ridding you of the chills of the shade. his laughter was the light at the end of a dark, dark tunnel; the light that reminded you that everything was going to be okay in the end as long as you don’t give up.

oh, but jongin’s voice. it was deep and smooth like honey. you could listen to him talk for hours on end no matter the topic. not to mention the way he spoke with a bright smile almost all the time—you always found yourself gazing at him with a rather dumb smile plastered across your face whenever he talked to you about his day, whether it be just taking care of his nieces and nephews or work in general.

“d-don’t stare at me like that,” jongin stammers when he notices you staring at him. your right cheek is squished between jongin’s arm and the cushion of your sofa, and jongin smiles at you with a confused, yet adorable, little frown. you’re both slouched on the sofa with horrid postures, jongin’s legs splayed out in front of you with your own legs curled over his as if they were a footrest. a k-drama plays on the television in front of you, though your interests lie elsewhere… namely in the one and only kim jongin beside you.

“am i making you uncomfortable?” you laugh, your hands slipping around his clothed waist. the fabric of his white sweater is soft and it’s like hugging a bear as your fingers clutch and knead at the fabric. jongin lets out a deep chuckle, moving his arm around you so you can properly bury your face into his side.

oh, and jongin’s scent. it’s like home, a bliss with every breath. it coats the back of your throat before wisping away, leaving you breathing in for more. it’s heavenly. it’s jongin.

“a little,” he admits in a sudden small voice.

“i’m sorry, jongin.”

“no, no!” jongin exclaims. he reaches over and shuts off the television and turns in your arms so his whole body faces you now. his free hand rises to cup your cheek and you find yourself closing your eyes at the feeling of his warm hands against your skin. for a brief moment, you imagine yourself gazing up at the sun, its shining light pleasant and just homely against your cheeks. “i didn’t mean it like that, angel,” jongin says. “it’s just—is there something on my face?”

you can’t help but let out a rather unpleasant-sounding snort at jongin’s innocent question. “mhm,” you hum with a teasing smile.

however, it’s a teasing smile that goes unnoticed by jongin as he immediately begins swiping at his face. “wait, really?” he gasps, and now it’s your turn to swat his hands away so you can cup his cheeks in your hands. immediately, jongin pauses and stares at you wide-eyed.

“yes, really,” you whisper. “my love for you is all over your face.”

then his eyes are curling into those lovely half-crescents, his mouth open in the wide, toothy grin that always made you grin too. a breathy laugh escapes him and you instantly find yourself crushed against him in a bear hug.

jongin was warm, yes.

but jongin’s warm because he’s the sun. sun-kissed himself by the enormous star itself, he’s the infectious ray of light that never fails to bring warmth to your day, whether it be through a smile, a laugh, or a hug.

jongin was a bliss with every breath.
