AN: So, here’s a holiday fic! And no, this is not part of my Christmas fic that people voted for, that’s something entirely different. Enjoy!

Kate stares at the plastic stick in her hand, test number three of three, the little pink plus sign causing a smile to spread across her face. She’s pregnant.

Oh… she’s pregnant!

Her mouth allows an uncharacteristic squeal to escape. Glancing around, she shakes her head, knowing full well she’s the only one home at the moment. Castle’s at a meeting, Alexis is at the P.I. Office, and Martha is…somewhere.

Castle…she needs to tell him.

She’s not one for grand gestures, that’s his thing. But this is a moment that definitely warrants much more than a simple statement. After all they’ve been through together, he deserves so much more. But how?

Sighing, she collects the three sticks, covering them up before throwing them in the trash.

She’ll figure out a way to tell him, soon.

She finds it, or rather it finds her, on a walk during lunch one day.

It’s the beginning of December, but the pleasant weather calls to her to stretch her legs and enjoy the seasonal displays in the store windows. So, she wanders outside, glancing through displays. When she passes a craft store, she’s sees it.

It’s an advertisement for a weekend class that entails hand making ornaments. Grinning, she scans the flyer, finding the situation simple enough. Even though it’s a Saturday, she can pass it off as having errands to run or something. Castle will probably be writing anyway.

Now, all she has to do is wait!

Saturday arrives faster than she thinks when she stands in front of the store at exactly two o’clock. The jingle of a bell greets her as she enters the shop and she returns a nod from the saleswoman at the counter.

Browsing through the various ornaments in stock, she selects one she likes (they’re all plastic, thankfully), pays for it, and enters the designated classroom. A young instructor greets her, the young woman explaining the idea behind the craft and indicating all the materials available for Kate’s use. The girl even shows her some special techniques to make the ornament look different.

So, the brunette goes to work, grabbing the supplies she wants and following the advice of the worker. It’s simple, but it’ll definitely deliver the message.

Twenty minutes later, the ornament dangles from her fingertips, complete, a triumphant smile on the captain’s lips. The young teacher praises her and congratulates her before handing her a festive bag and bidding the captain goodbye. The brunette peers inside the bag, beaming.

Oh yes, he’ll definitely get the idea.

She saunters home, tucking her chin into her collar to create a barrier between her and the now chilly weather. Eduardo greets her as she enters the building, his smile noting the bounce in her step. She just waves, entering the elevator, making an effort to tone down her giddiness.

When she reaches the loft, she almost throws open the door, announcing her presence.

“Babe, I’m home!” she calls. His acknowledgment emanates from behind the office door. Ah, he must be taking a break.

“You get all your errands done?” he asks, laptop resting on his lap. She resists the urge to roll her eyes when she spots the Youtube logo on the screen. Procrastinator until the end.

“I did. In fact, we have a new Christmas ornament,” she declares, holding out the bag.

His lips quirk, no doubt finding it amusing that she bought a Christmas decoration. Normally that’s his thing.

“Oh?” He raises an eyebrow, fingers wrapping around the handle.

“I made it, actually.”

“You? Making a Christmas related item? Who are you and what have you done with Kate Beckett?”

As she rolls her eyes, a hand reaches out, swatting his arm.

“Just open it,” she insists, toes bouncing in excitement.

Chuckling, he picks the ornament out of the bag, holding it up by the hook. Confusion fills his eyes as he stares at the swirls of pink and blue.

“Interesting color choices,” he remarks, still lost.

Snickering, she extends a finger, gently twirling the plastic globe as the words written in metallic gold marker face him.

“Baby’s Very First Christmas,” he murmurs. Realization dawns on him before an expression of utter surprise forms on his face. “Kate, are you-“

“Looks like we’ll be adding more ornaments to the tree soon,” she jokes.

The sentence is barely out of her mouth before he sweeps her into a hug, twirling her around before putting her down again.

“God, this great! Fantastic! A baby, Kate! Our baby!” He kisses her, seemingly putting every ounce of passion and excitement he can muster into the kiss.

His exhilaration at the prospect of their child has her heart fluttering, already knowing he’ll be a fantastic father.

“Our baby,” she repeats, placing his hand on her flat stomach. Reaching over, she picks the decoration off the desk, and his other hand clasps hers so that they’re both holding the string.

“Come on, let’s go put our newest addition on the tree.”

A/N: Inspired by this heart touching video I saw on Twitter.

-

He’s supposed to be here.

Kate checks the time on her wrist, her dad’s watch still ticking, and brushes her thumb to Lily’s knuckles when the girl squeezes her hand in question. They’ve been waiting in line for half an hour and it’s finally their daughter’s turn to speak with Santa.

After her first viewing of Miracle on 34th Street, Lily has been persistent to meet Santa in a Macy’s. Castle, of course, was thrilled by the idea and spent fifteen minutes straight with his eyes glued to his phone, searching for the earliest opportunity.

And now, here she is with their five year old daughter, about to step up to sit with Santa, and he isn’t here.

Lily squeezes her hand again and Kate looks down to provide her daughter with her full attention.

Where is Daddy?

Kate sighs, lifts her own hand to answer,

I don’t know, baby. Should be here any minute.

Lily frowns and tilts into Kate’s side.

Kate slips her hand from her daughter’s grasp, combs her fingers through Lily’s hair. She can tell that the girl is nervous, always anxious about trying to express herself to those who don’t understand, who can’t speak her language, who never know how to handle the little deaf girl.

Kate would never change their daughter, neither would Rick - they never imagined during her pregnancy that their baby would arrive any differently, never planned or prepared to raise a child with special needs, but she wouldn’t change it. She wouldn’t change the hours she and Rick spent studying sign language, teaching Lily, ensuring she always felt that she was being heard and hearing them too. She wouldn’t change the good days, the bad; she wouldn’t change Lily.

But she would give anything to change the ache in Lily’s eyes, the frustration that purses her lips, every time she’s unable to express herself without struggle.

Lily looks around one last time, but despite how unlike it is for him not to show, her daddy isn’t here yet and time seems to be up. And while Kate can provide just as much comfort and reassurance as Rick can, Lily is always more confident in these situations when both parents are present.

“Next in line, please,” the head elf, a woman in costume with a kind smile, calls out, her gaze falling on Kate and Lily. “Come on, sweetheart. Don’t you want to meet Santa?”

Lily’s brow furrows and she glances up to her mother. She’s getting better at reading lips, but Kate knows she wasn’t able to catch all of that.

Kate simply nods forward, towards the path lit by twinkling gold Christmas lights and glittering snowflakes leading to Santa’s grotto. The enthusiastic elf employee skips on ahead of them, guiding them past a field of fake reindeer and a workshop scene full of toys, stacks of boxes wrapped in vibrant red and green patterns with big red bows. The woman in the elf costume stops once they reach the man sitting on a massive red velvet throne, allows Kate and Lily to go on ahead of her.

“Well, who do we have here?” the man in the Santa suit asks, his voice deep and rich, automatically comforting. He peers down at Lily past the fluffy white beard consuming the majority of his face.

Kate touches Lily’s shoulder, but the girl remains against her side, her lips parting but her hands limp.

“This is Lily,” Kate answers, nudging her daughter a few steps forward. Lily glances up at her, swallowing at Kate’s nod and covering the final few inches of fake snow on the floor to reach Santa on her own.

The man playing the role of the jolly Christmas legend extends his white gloved hand, waiting patiently for Lily to accept. The apples of his cheeks rise as he shakes her hand.

“Hello, Lily,” he greets, his blue eyes shining at the girl. “Do you want to sit up here with me while you tell Santa what you’d like for Christmas?”

Lily’s hands start to flutter before she looks to Kate for help, but before Kate can step in, begin to translate for her daughter, the man playing Santa lifts a hand instead.

His fingers dance, forming gestures Kate instantly recognizes. Performing flawless sign language.

Her heart skips with relief, with joy at the ecstatic expression on her daughter’s face, and then realization.

Castle.

Lily’s climbs into his lap, moving her hands enthusiastically, telling Santa all about her Christmas list, and beaming every time he answers her. Kate’s throat begins to clog, unsure which has her more choked up - the look on her daughter’s face at having someone who isn’t in their immediately family that can understand her or the fact that her husband dressed up as Santa to give her such a rare gift.

Kate watches Castle convey that he’ll do his best to fulfill Lily’s wishes, reminding her to be good, always listen to her mommy and daddy. Their little girl smiles, stretches to wrap her arms around his neck. Kate blinks away the ridiculous sting of moisture as Rick hugs their daughter back, presses a quick kiss to the top of her head, and helps her hop down from his lap.

“And my head elf has a gift bag full of treats for you,” he says aloud, pointing to the elf waiting by the exit with a clear bag overflowing with candy canes, Christmas themed chocolates, and a small stuffed reindeer.

Kate watches Lily troy over to the woman, ensuring that her attention is elsewhere before striding up to Rick. She leans over the arm of the chair and tugs the beard down to his chin, her cheeks aching with a smile as her suspicions are confirmed with his grinning face.

Kate cradles one of his cheeks in her palms. “Hey, Santa.”

“At your service,” he murmurs, winking up at her.

All she can do is shake her head before she seals her smile to his, hoping he can feel the gratitude in the press of her lips.

“I love you,” she whispers, stroking his cheek with her thumb.

“I love you too,” he hums, turning his head to dust his lips to her palm. “But our daughter is about to catch Mommy kissing Santa Claus.”

Kate immediately straightens, allowing him to reposition his beard into place, adjust the Santa’s hat atop his head. Lily is still rummaging through her treat bag, thrumming with the residual excitement of meeting with whom Kate is sure their daughter believes is the real Santa after performing what probably feels like the miracle of conversing with her so effortlessly.

“I’m just doing this gig for another fifteen minutes before the real actor shows up,” Castle murmurs just loud enough for her to hear past the muffle of the beard. “Then I’ll meet you at home, Ms. Claus.”

“Mm, good. Bring me one of those peppermint mocha coffees from the shop down the street,” she requests with a smirk.

He huffs. “Please, I’ll make you one that’ll taste ten times better when I get there.”

“All right, deal,” she chuckles, catching Lily’s approaching footsteps from the corner of her eye, her eager and impatient signing.

Mommy, let’s go.

“Oh and Castle?” He quirks an eyebrow at her. “Bring the Santa suit home with you.”

Christmas Continuations

As most of you know, I’ve made a tradition of the habit of writing a holiday themed story for Christmas each year and while I still intend to put out new content for this year, I’ve also been gravitating towards the idea of writing follow up glimpses into a few of my already existing fics. So for anyone who may be interested, I’m hoping to receive your thoughts and opinions on which stories you would like to see continued for this holiday occasion. I’ve already received multiple requests for Hiraeth and Believing Is Seeing and while I won’t promise that I’ll be able to write a continuation for every story (still very much on the fence for BIS), I will try to provide a glimpse into as many universes as desired. :)

AN: Some holiday cuteness.

Kate sighs, snuggling into the soft sheets of her and her husband’s bed. Forcing one eye open, she peeks at the clock, which reads 6 AM. Groaning, she rolls over, hoping to get some more sleep. However, she knows it won’t happen. Not that she minds, much.

Sure enough, the soft patter of little feet reaches her ears and soon, the bed dips.

“Momma,” her daughter’s soft voice whispers.

Kate hears the quiet snort of her husband on her other side. It earns him a discreet whack.

“Momma,” Lily tries again.

Kate turns around, smiling as her daughter pokes her.

“What’s up, Lil?” she asks, voice thick with sleep.

“Choco,” the toddler intones seriously and Kate has to keep herself from laughing.

“It’s early, baby. Let’s get some more sleep and then we can unlock the chocolate,” Kate insists to no avail. Lily attempts to tug her out of bed, an adorable pout on her face. “Okay, just give me a minute.”

Once their daughter scampers out of the room, Castle chuckles, rising from the bed.

“This is your fault,” she mumbles, slipping on her robe and slippers, heading for the kitchen.

“Well, she is a Castle through and through.” He smirks, going for the bathroom.

Rolling her eyes, Kate enters the kitchen, grinning when she notices Lily standing on her tip toes near the island.

“Up you go,” Kate murmurs, hoisting the little girl onto the seat. “What would you like for breakfast?”

“Choco!” Lily chants, hands waving.

“Okay, okay.” Kate snickers, knowing nothing else will get done until this particular task is complete. “You’ll get your treat.”

It’s only one anyway.

Yay!’ The little brunette claps her hands, beaming. “Daddy!”

“I’m coming,” he calls, now dressed. He smiles as he approaches them, giving her a quick kiss on the lips and Lily a peck on the head. “You ready?” he asks their daughter.

“Yes!”

“Alright then.” Reaching toward the wall, he pulls off a calendar in the shape of a tree, laden with numbers, and places it in front of the toddler. “So, which one are you going to open today?”

Lily glances at the calendar as her eyebrows furrow in thought, making Kate’s heart melt. She’s so cute!  After a moment, she flips open one of the flaps. The fact that it’s the correct one makes Kate beam with pride as Lily grabs the chocolate piece inside.

“Very good, Lil!” she and Castle praise.

“How many days do we have left?” he inquires.

The toddler holds out her hands, opening and closing them twice.

“That’s right! Twenty days until Christmas!” Kate exclaims, reaching over and tickling her daughter’s belly, earning high pitched giggles and squeals.

“Santa’s time,” Lily states.

“Yep, Christmas is Santa’s time to shine,” Castle says, winking at his wife. The Santa costume is tucked away in the back of their closet, waiting to be used on the day of festivities. Ever since Lily was born, Kate’s found herself to be more in the holiday spirit, much to Castle’s delight.

“But that’s not for another few weeks. Until then, we’ll count down the days.” Kate murmurs, her chin resting on top of Lily’s head.

“More choco,” Lily chirps.

“Tomorrow,” Kate promises. “One day closer to Christmas.” She glances at the calendar, eyeing the remaining compartments.

Her heart fills with giddiness at the prospect of opening each and every one.

Lily’s First Thanksgiving

A Caskett Ficlet

Image

Staring down at his daughter laying on her changing table, Castle felt more than a little sad about having to take off her adorable First Thanksgiving outfit. The day had gone even better than he expected–it had easily become his favorite Thanksgiving ever–and he was sorry to see it end. Weighing even heavier on his heart was they had passed yet another one of Lily’s “firsts”–she was getting so big! True, at barely six months old she had many, many firsts to come, but on days like that one he really wished time would slow down so they could savor each moment to the fullest.

As he pulled off her top and pants and changed her diaper, Castle reviewed the highlights of the day in his mind including watching the Macy’s parade, allowing her to taste sweet potatoes for the first time, and watching her grin up at him with her two little bottom teeth showing as he read her a Thanksgiving tale once their meal was over. Those were the moments that made Castle’s heart nearly explode with pure joy; he loved her so much.

“Okay, Lily, are you all tired out after your exciting day? You’re going to fall asleep quickly tonight, aren’t you?” he cooed at her. Considering that her only response was a yawn, he assumed the answer was yes.

After changing her into her pjs like the second-time-dad pro that he was, Castle snuggled Lily close to his chest and sang her one of his favorite lullabies; she was asleep before he was even done. Normally he might have been extra disappointing, as he loved the little moments they shared while he put her to sleep, but that night he couldn’t blame her. After being passed around from grandmother to grandfather to big sister for hours, he was surprised she’d lasted until her regular bedtime at seven.

“Hey do you need–oh. She’s asleep already.”

Castle smiled at his wife where she hovered in the bedroom doorway. He lowered Lily into her crib, gave her belly a little pat, then walked a few steps closer to Kate. “Oh yeah–could barely keep her eyes open.”

Kate hummed and leaned over the edge of the crib to smile at their daughter. “She had a good first Thanksgiving.”

“She did,” he agreed. Then, he leaned over and pressed a sweet ksis to her lips. “You know, in all the enthusiasm over Lily, I realized I forgot to tell you what I’m most thankful for this year.”

She slipped an arm around his waist and gave him a little squeeze. “Yeah? What’s that?”

“My life with you.”

Her grin spread all the way across her face as she said, “Me too, Castle; me too.”

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank You

While it’s still Thanksgiving in my part of the world, I just want to extend a brief thank you to so many of you. To anyone who has ever taken the time to read anything I’ve ever written, who’s been kind enough to send me feedback and support and stories of your own. Writing has always been my greatest passion, but I never imagined myself sharing it, never thought it would be anything to take seriously. I posted my first piece of fanfic on a whim and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and that’s because of all of you. I have met so many amazing people in this fandom, quite a few I’m privileged enough to consider friends, and I’m so endlessly grateful to all of you for everything.

Again, thank you.

For Writers:

Reblog if it’s okay for your followers to leave you an ask telling you what the one thing is they remember you for as a writer.  Is it a scene or a detail or a specific line? Is it something like style or characterization?  Is it that one weird kink they never thought they’d be into, but oh my god wow self-discovery time?

When a bunch of yelping and scratching from the apartment above her keeps Kate up all night she's had enough. Rushing upstairs she starts to let the man at the door have it. She notices he's more into trying to stop something at bottom of the door than her. What she finds is an apartment full of puppies! "Sorry! I rescued them from(a bad situation) and...." " it's ok" Kate smiles. How can she stay mad at a handsome man who rescues puppies?!

Scratch! Scratch! Scratch!

Kate groans, throwing a pillow over her head, attempting to muffle the sounds of the incessant noise from above.

Scratch! Scratch!

Her teeth set, her legs swinging over the bed until her feet hit the wood floor. What the hell is the person doing up there?

Scratch!

Her eyes flicker to the ceiling, glaring. This is night number three of this madness and lack of sleep for her. And, she has to get up early for her patrol tomorrow. Her body needs rest!

Throwing on a pair of sweats, she stomps to the elevator, taking it to the floor above her. She’s able to figure out which apartment it is she’s searching for, and really it’s not hard, since the same sound is coming from just beyond the door.

Her fist knocks, and she has to restrain herself from pounding on the wooden surface. She waits, hints of a shuffling noise reaching her ears.

A second later, the doors opens a crack, revealing an admittedly handsome guy, who’s clearly distracted.

“Hello?” he asks, eyebrows furrowing in confusion, blues eyes wary. “May I help you?”

She opens her mouth, momentarily stalling when she spots something nudging at the door before the man’s foot blocks it.

“Yeah, I live in the apartment below you and I’ve been hearing this scratching sound the past few nights.” A small groan escapes him, but she presses on. “And I don’t know what’s going on but it’s been depriving me of sleep and I need to get up early.” She purses her lips, shrugging.

She hates sounding like a pest, but she really doesn’t want to be dragging her ass while on the beat. Her fellow officers would never let her live it down.

“I’m sorry,” he starts, a bit sheepish. ‘It’s just-“ He stops just as the thing that’s been clawing at him climbs over his leg and outside the apartment. A ball of fur tumbles out, paws front forward.

“Han,” he whines at the adorable animal, the puppy shaking itself.

The creature ignores him, going for Kate, tiny paws clutching her ankle.

“Hi there!” she croons, heart melting at the sight of golden retriever. Picking him up, she cradles him against her chest, his black eyes gazing at her before licking her cheek, earning him a smile from her. “Aren’t you sweet!”

“Sorry,” the man apologizes, chuckling. “I found him, and two others, abandoned in a box the other night. It was raining and they looked so cold.” Her annoyance dissipates at his story as his head shakes. Soon, there’s a cacophony of prancing paws and yips. Two heads poke through the crack, one brown and the other black and white. “No, Luke, Leia, stay back!”

Her eyebrows raise in amusement and she snickers as the puppies clamor to escape the apartment.

“So, you’re what’s been making the sound!” she exclaims, playfully glaring at the two of them.

“Yeah, they’ve been overly excited and nervous,” he explains. “I’m Rick, by the way.”

“Kate,” she responds, rocking Han in her arms. “Is it all right if I set him down?”

“Sure, come on in.” He opens the door wide enough for her to enter. She walks in, cautiously stepping around the duo of puppies.

As soon as she’s inside, the other two are at her legs, begging for attention. A soft giggle emanates from her lips as she releases Han from her grasp.

Looking up, she takes a moment to examine the owner of the apartment. He’s definitely handsome and in fact, looks extremely familiar.

“You’re Richard Castle!” she says, voice bordering on a squeak.

“Yep, that would be me.” He chortles, running a hand down the two- toned dog’s back, receiving a nudge in response. “Good girl, Leia.”

“What are you doing here?” Last she recalls, he doesn’t live in her building, let alone the neighborhood.

“House sitting for a friend,” he hums, walking to the living room. The small horde of puppies follows suit, almost climbing over one another to reach him.

Mouth setting into a frown, she inquires, “Don’t you think they’ll be annoyed by a bunch of dogs in the house or the remnants of them?” She sure as hell would be pissed, regardless of how cute and cuddly they appear.

He shrugs. “I’ll have everything cleaned up before he gets home. I figured I could give these guys one for a little bit.” Taking something off the table, he sets three bowls down on the floor, the trio of creatures diving in, a symphony of munching filling the apartment.

“They are adorable,” Kate sighs before turning to him apologetically. “I’m sorry for bothering you, it’s just I need to get up early for my beat.”

“Beat…You’re a cop?” The amazement in his voice for some reason makes her blush.

“Yeah, been on the force for a year. I plan to make detective at some point.

“That’s so cool!” he chirps.

She rolls her eyes at the boyish grin on his face before returning her gaze to the puppies.

“Would you like to take one? I’ll definitely keep one, but I don’t know if all three will be tolerated at home with my mother and daughter.”

She shakes her head in dismay. “I wish I could, but with my hours, I’m lucky I can take care of myself between shifts.” Disappointment settles within her as Leia turns around, staring at the brunette imploringly with her big, brown eyes. “You’re not being fair,” she grouses, earning a yelp in response.

The man beside her snickers. “I’m here for another week if you want to visit them…and me.” He winks, earning another eye roll.

“They’re worth a visit,” she teases.

She leaves with a promise from him to keep the scratching to a minimum.

It’s the first time she sleeps soundly in the last three days.

She goes to visit the puppies, and admittedly Castle, every day. All of them make her laugh and forget the darkness that surrounds her career, if even for a brief moment. At the end of the week, she caves and walks out with Leia in her arms, along with bags full of dog food and toys.

On the way out, Castle slips her his number as well as an invitation for coffee. Nerves almost get the best of her, since she hasn’t had a decent date in a while.

“What do you think, Leia?” she asks her new companion. “Should I go on a date with Castle?”

The puppy lets out what she assumes is a yip of approval. She chuckles.

Looks like she’ll be cuddling two new things this week.
