I was just wondering if the idea of warm and soft with a bit of " I'll smack ya if you're a fool" was worn out when it comes to lances mother. I don't wanna be too cliche and possibly insulting since a lot of Hispanic mothers are interpreted as that

so mind you this is an opinion and not the general rule, but when it comes to writing that sort of relationship it comes down to tone. a lot of time when hispanic people write hispanic mothers like that it’s either a tone of a joke or nostalgia in a way because they experienced it. but when people write that and haven’t lived through it, it can come off as offensive.

i think the best way is to if you want to have that sort of dynamic, understand that there’s a line that you may very well cross. there are ways to write authoritative parents without making them an abusive stereotype.

hey all!! i just had a question about a throwaway line in a fic i'm writing that has do with lance's mom, if you're comfortable with me asking you all about it, could it ask it?

yeah of course! whats your question?

Hey, well first of all, this blog is amazing. I'm colombian, so i need to clarify this is not my first language. So, this is probably a senseless mess. Anyway, I love your HC's so much, especially that one where Lance's name is actually Leandro Alejandro Nuñez Cuesta Espinoza. And i need to ask if i can use it in my fanfic.

Avatar

thank you!! i’m so glad you do!!! and of course you can!!!! if you do can you drop us the link to the fic because I’d like to put together a list of fics that use it

Do Cubans celebrate dia de muertos? I'm Mexican, and I'm a little curious and also want to know if my little fan art of Lance in skull candy makeup is ok.

Noooo we don't :v it's a Mexican holiday my guy

Do you headcannon Lance as being from any province? I personally think he'd be from Matanzas, due to the fact Veradero Beach is there and he has mentioned going to that beach.

Avatar

I definitely hc him as being a Matanzas/Varadero Beach boy. He didn't talk about it like it was a vacation spot to him; he talked about it like it was absolutely home to him. Plus, Matanzas is like, home of a really gr8 pizzeria that's so good they managed to expand two branches in Florida (and it's ridiculously popular among Cuban refugees!!!).

However his dad is a Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus man, and this is my hc ✌🏽

Idk if you've seen the clips from nycc, but there's one that shows Lance milking Kaltenecker super expertly. Do you think that his family might own a farm or ranch in Cuba?

yes! that’s very possible! the mods of this blog firmly believe that from the evidence from the show and things that the writers have said, Lance is most likely an immigrant from Cuba and would very plausibly had cow milking experience.

in the surname page it says that sanchez was popularized by a harmful/racist fanfic, do you mind saying which fanfic it was to avoid it?

it was a fic called dirty laundry

Do you mind spoilers? Because I had a question but it's spoilery.

Yeah that's no problem, we'll tag appropriately

Do you think Lance and his family would adhere to the trope where Latinx fix everything with food, or do you prefer to stay clear of stuff like that?

i think he definitely would, eating and food are a huge part latinx culture

Do you spell the word "Acere" or "Asere"? I saw it in a post you reblogged as Asere, which is what I've been writing it as, but when I looked at a different list of Cuban slang it was spelled Acere.

it’s spelled Acere, we must not have caught the misspelling but thank you for letting us know!

Do you think Lance and his siblings would use Spanish less in casual conversation and more when he's surprised/angry/excited/preoccupied/around family? Like he'd sometimes use Spanish exclamations and/or swear in Spanish (coño, que carajo, etc.) more often than he'd say "that gato is cute" or something like that? (I'm just asking about Lance's characterization, I know lots of people drop Spanish words like that irl.)

definitely! especially with interjections and exclamation, slipping a spanish word or two with family is quite common.

Is "Carlos" a viable last name for Lance?

while that’s a very common first name, you don’t see it much used as a last name in latin america and certainly not cuba. it’d be a good second name though!

hello just wondering, how do cubans do their quinceañeras? im mexican/honduran and im sure we don't do it the same and that there is culture differences between our traditions in quinces. I'm asking because i want some insight from you and because i have some lance headcanons that i wonder if they're accurate. Sorry if i bother you with this!

ahhh i’m not exactly sure what the differences are, though I’m sure there are some. I actually didn’t have a quinces (i took a vacation instead lmao) buuuuuut i know that @cubanbisexuallance did and she could answer you way better on this

Is it okay to refer to Lance's mom as 'his mom' when talking about her outside of dialogue, but call her 'Mami' when he's directly speaking to or about her, like in dialogue? Example: 'In times like these, Lance always turned to his mom for advice.' and "Mami, what do you think I should do?" Lance asked.

yeah that’s perfectly fine

Avatar

Apologies if you've already covered this somewhere. I gathered that Lance would address his mum and dad as Mami and Papi, but are there any affectionate terms that they might call him, as their child? Wanted for a scene in a fic I'm writing. Lance is talking with his mum and basically silently wishing he could stay a kid forever, safe with his mum, so if there's a common, everyday term that a parent might call their kid, that'd work well.

Avatar

ahhh sorry i’m answering this so late

there’s terms like: –mijo–nene–chiquito–papito

and then terms that are more like phrases like: –mi vida–cariño–mi cielo

I'm writing a high school au where Lance and Pidge have to research a revolution. I was gonna have them research the Cuban revolution (which I researched, too) because Lance is Cuban, but now I'm wondering if that's kind of tokenism? I know many Cubans love and are proud of their culture, and Lance would be, too, but I can't tell if it seems forced. I don't want to be like those people who say, "making Lance, a Cuban character, seem Cuban is racist" but I don't want to force it on him, either.

firstly that whole "making Lance, a Cuban character, seem Cuban is racist" is so stupid like it’s like they’ve never met a Cuban in their entire life (we literally make sure you know we’re Cuban and we literally talk about being Cuban all the time. this is a real thing)

but like !!!! yes!!! i think that’s totally ok because, no joke, for every project that i had the liberty to do research on something, i chose a Cuban topic. Like 8th grade exit project: Cuban Freedom Flights. High School research report: Cuban Missile Crisis. College paper: Communism in Cuba.

Cubans love doing reports on Cuba because literally no one else will do it
