woman-shaped person, she/her/hers are fine, terfs/swerfs/exclusionsts will be blocked. i simply do not care about shipping discourse and purity culture wars bc i have other things to worry about.

a common throughline in Shit What I Like is understanding how and why systems work. popular tags include:

similar topic but it's so funny to me when people are like "you can't ship these people one of them is the other's father figure!" as if wanting to fuck a father figure isn't the only joy left in this life

fandom tumblr was another casualty of streaming services. we used to be on here posting about the episodes that were coming out weekly and posting gifs and writing insane shit about the tv shows we liked. now a new season of a show will drop and we’ll talk about it for a week. two weeks tops. and then that show will leave collectively conscious for 1+ year till the next season drops. there’s a reason succession sundays was a blast on here

we used to have real television

i have maybe the worst type of cuteness aggression about fiction characters that im attracted to

i see guy from shows and im like ''awwh hes so cute i need to see him curled up in a ball on the floor clutching his organs and sobbing inbetween haggard breaths''

hes so pretty i need to see him writhing in agony and gasping inbetween rough sobs and covered in his own blood and visibly injured

Propaganda

Marlene Dietrich (Shanghai Express, Witness for the Prosecution, Morocco)—Bisexual icon, super hot when dressed both masculine and feminine, lived up her life in the queer Berlin scene of the 1920s, central to the 'sewing circle' of the secret sapphic actresses of Old Hollywood, refused lucrative offers by the Nazis and helped Jews and others under persecution to escape Nazi Germany, the love of my life

Xia Meng, also known as Hsia Moog or Miranda Yang (Sunrise, Bride Hunter)—For those who are familiar with Hong Kong's early cinema, Xia Meng is THE leading woman of an era, the earliest "silver-screen goddess", "The Great Beauty" and "Audrey Hepburn of the East". Xia Meng starred in 38 films in her 17-year career, and famously had rarely any flops, from her first film at the age of 18 to her last at the age of 35. She was a rare all-round actress in Mandarin-language films, acting, singing, and dancing with an enchanting ease in films of diverse genres, from contemporary drama to period operas. She was regarded as the "crown princess" among the "Three Princesses of the Great Wall", the iconic leading stars of the Great Wall Movie Enterprises, which was Hong Kong's leading left-wing studio in the 1950s-60s. At the time, Hong Kong cinema had only just taken off, but Xia Meng's influence had already spread out to China, Singapore, etc. Overseas Chinese-language magazines and newspapers often featured her on their covers. The famous HK wuxia novelist Jin Yong had such a huge crush on her that he made up a whole fake identity as a nobody-screenwriter to join the Great Wall studio just so he can write scripts for her. He famously said, "No one has really seen how beautiful Xi Shi (one of the renowned Four Beauties of ancient China) is, I think she should be just like Xia Meng to live up to her name." In 1980, she returned to the HK film industry by forming the Bluebird Movie Enterprises. As a producer with a heart for the community, she wanted to make a film on the Vietnam War and the many Vietnam War refugees migrating to Hong Kong. She approached director Ann Hui and produced the debut film Boat People (1982), a globally successful movie and landmark feature for Hong Kong New Wave, which won several awards including the best picture and best director in the second Hong Kong Film Award. Years later, Ann Hui looked back on her collaboration with Xia Meng, "I'm very grateful to her for allowing me to make what is probably the best film I've ever made in my life."

This is round 5 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

as a chinese-german this match up is truly *head in hands*

since this is likely the end of the road for my girl Xia Meng i'm pulling out all the stops

first of all i need you guys to look at these gifs i made of Xia Meng's performance in the yue opera film The Princess Falls in Love. i literally had to call my chinese mother who then had to call my grandma to find this 20sth y/o shitty vhs tape in her old house and mail it to her and then find the correct equipment to digitize the whole thing

but i do think Xia Meng's face in the top left one alone made all the effort worthwhile. and look how pretty her water sleeves movements are!!!

ANDDD i finally have somewhat decent quality pics of her cross-gender role in Bride Hunter. again, gifs credit goes to my shitty ps skills, my mom's never-dying love for her teen idol, and my grandparents' immortal vhs machine

the bottom two gifs are from when her character, a bratty young gentleman, dresses up as a woman for a bet, but ends up winning over the sister of the guy who wants to marry him (yeah I know, what a plot). i just love how suavely she moves around as a woman playing a man who disguises as a woman, and also LOOK HOW CUTE THEY HOLD HANDS in yue opera

more of her opera looks in different vibes bc ✨CULTURE✨

being the leading star of a communist movie studio in 1959s hk means having relatively few glamour shots or sexually provocative pics, but Xia Meng is a very low-key introverted person by nature so it actually worked out perfectly for her

her humility also extends to her acting, with famous hk writer Dong Qiao describing her as "a real actor, not just a star" bc she's a master of "storytelling" instead of "posturing"

her down-to-earth personality and friendly charm captivated everyone around her. the classic mandarin song Si Nian is inspired by her, a song about missing a dear friend who is "like a butterfly flying into my window" and leaving too soon

it's been amazing to see the only hk lady in this tournament to make it all the way into round 5, so i just wanna take a moment to thank everyone showed their love for my girl Xia Meng <3 may you all have a summer dream as beautiful as its namesake

I saw this question posed on tiktok, but I think Tumblr would really enjoy it too.

If a fae creature offered to give one million dollars for a bone chosen at random, how many bones would you allow them to take?

Light clarifications; The fae is not the one choosing the bones. The bone is taken at random. Each bone, no matter the size or importance, is worth a full million dollars. You must also declare the exact number first, you can't go bone-by-bone. You either say 2 or you say 10, you can't work your way up to a higher number. The bones are removed instantaneously, and the money is given immediately as well. You will not get in government trouble for acquiring the money.

Tell me in the tags/replies how many bones you'd let the fae take. And as always, reblog for bigger sample size.

One Dress a Day Challenge

Multicolored August

The Taming of the Shrew / Elizabeth Taylor as Katharina Minola

I don't quite know why they chose to dress Kate in this strange sort of patchwork dress with mismatched sleeves and a random panel of pink in the back--but it looks fun, and maybe that's all the reason they needed. It certainly goes along with the generally slapstick atmosphere of the movie. She even has red boots to go with it (visible in the picture where she's sitting by the window).

I had not watched this movie for ages, but when I went in to make screencaps, I was reminded of how much fun it can be, even though I'd certainly never take it as a blueprint for real-life relationships. I confess I threw in some of these screencaps just for the facial expressions! The score by Nino Rota is pretty good too.
