Cabana, by Tumblr Hang out, watch stuff.

iOS and Android

Hey! We made a new iPhone app. It’s called Cabana and it’s for hanging out with friends and watching videos.

Wait, a whole new app?

Yup, a whole new app.

Really?

Yeah! It’s good. You just open it, video chat with up to five friends, and watch stuff together.

Hey, neat. Anything else I should know?

Nah, it’s pretty simple. It looks like that👇 . We’ve got some ideas about where to go with it, but hey, all in good time.

<3 Tumblr

Oh, p.s., the Android version should be out in a few weeks. Enjoy.

p.p.s., as promised, Cabana is now on Android. Have fun, Tumblr.

Fandometrics: The Week in Review

Some brand new babies, and those who have returned

  • (Movies) To the surprise of approximately zero people, Wonder Woman earned the  No. 1 spot. To the surprise of maybe a few more than zero people, Baywatch made it to No. 16.
  • (Celebrities) Thanks to Wonder Woman, director Patty Jenkins makes her wonderful debut at No. 9 and Chris Pine (No. 2) returns to the list for the first time since August 2016.
  • (Video Games) The Walking Dead (No. 16) is an old favorite on our Television list, but this is the first time the video game has ranked.
  • (Television) Sense8 (No. 4) returns, only because it’s leaving. The news of its cancellation was a bad way to kick off June.
  • (Ships) Paperhat (Villainous’ Black Hat and Dr. Flug) debuts at No. 12.

Who knows CPR? These things need to be revived:

  • (Music) Lana Del Rey (No. 17) fell eight spots while Katy Perry (No. 19) fell seven. Swish, swish.
  • (Celebrities) It pains us to say it, but Misha Collins has stumbled eight spots to No. 15. What will it take to get him back up? We’ve already had so many Mishapocalypses.
  • (Television) With all the hubbub about Wonder Woman, no one is paying attention to Supergirl (No. 13). She fell eight spots in one week. That’s not nearly as bad as The 100, a show that fell a record fourteen spots in a mere seven days.
  • (Ships) Bellarke (The 100’s Bellamy Blake and Clarke Griffin) fell eight spots, but lands at a still impressive No. 11. The same can’t be said for Evak (Skam’s Even Bech Næsheim and Isak Valtersen), who is barely there at No. 20.

You did it. You went the long way around the sun and now you’re back for another Tumblr Year in Review. This year: 2016.

What is Tumblr’s Year In Review?

Why it’s all the top stuff on Tumblr. From all over Tumblr. Stacked and sorted by our very own Fandometrics, the pleasingly scientific system we use to rank your enthusiasm and love. Scan the categories below for the things you’re most enthusiastic about.

The best of 2016, right this way please 👉

TV: Live Action The stranger things in life: Zombies, teen wolves, big brothers, and Steven Moffat.

TV: Animated Gems, ladybugs, and transformers start our top 20 list.

Movies  Superheroes and strong women. Not mutually exclusive.

Solo artists 60% of your favorite musicians were women this year. Some of the others came from the Australian internet.

Bands In this year: Numbered groups. Out this year: The Beatles.

Albums The oldest album on this list is from 2010. It’s old enough to go to Kindergarten.

K-Pop Once you K-pop the fun don’t K-stop.

Actresses A commander and scavenger walked into this list.

Actors  Sebastian Stan is our boyfriend now. Sorry, Chris-es.

Models  The first time we’ve seen two male models grace this list.

Athletes With seven past and present members of the USWNT, we almost have a whole soccer team.

Reality stars The Kardashians continue to be your favorite family, but this list is 40% drag queens.

Video games  An indie game can beat out every major release this year. Take that, Big Game.

Web stuff Assorted stuff from the internet.

Social issues In a year of countless important conversations, these were the issues Tumblr talked about the most.

Books How many lists can Dan and Phil appear on? Here’s another.

Anime and Manga We made a dubbed version of this list, but it was way worse than the original.

Ships Set sail on the S.S. Conceptual Relationship.

Memes  So much more than just a picture with bottom text.

Tumblr communities Not every -blr on Tumblr, but the 20 that did the the most talking this year. From Artblr to the Simblr, Petblr to Applying-for-college-blr, welcome home.

Art You’ll know it when you see it.

Food  Serving size: 1 list. Contains natural flavors. A good source of riboflavin. 100%DV fun.

Animals  You can domesticate about half of this list. Two of them may even be real!

Tumblr Gets Deep When reblogs get witty, wise, or just straight-up WTF.

Shifty Dark has dropped

First came Shifty. One of the simplest, cleverest and popularest themes we’ve ever made. Now meet Shifty Dark, just as simple, just as clever, but darker.

Soooo much darker.

Designed to let your posts really pop on your blog, Shifty Dark is happy to disappear into the background and let your content be the star of the show.

Shifty Dark is particularly great at showing off photos and artwork and will display photosets in all their glory on the home page. Your images are going to look super vibrant on the ‘almost-black’ background. As an added bonus you can hide dates, icons, tags and navigation so there is literally nothing to distract your audience from your visuals.

But simplicity doesn’t mean that Shifty Dark is dumb. Like all of our themes it’s full of easy-to-use features like an quick way to create a dropdown of important tags - perfect for portfolio blogs.

Features of Shifty Dark

  • Choose how wide your images are from small to full width
  • Go ultra-minimal and hide dates, icons, tags and navigation
  • Create beautiful photosets for display on the home page
  • Select key tags as a dropdown in the menu with ease
  • Set up your intro block with a color, text or image
  • Use the sticky navigation to keep your menu in full view
  • Upload your own logo or use your Tumblr avatar
  • Enable the ‘related posts’ Tumblr feature to keep people reading
  • Switch on ‘infinite scroll’ to automatically load more posts
  • Effortlessly display elegant social icons
  • Choose from a tastefully curated set of gorgeous Google fonts

Superb for photography, graphic design, art and portfolio blogs, let this elegant theme take you to some dark places.

Meet BEXAR

We were super pleased to see the fantastic BEXAR (pronounced Bear) Goods Co were using our Method Theme to power their very lovely Tumblr blog. BEXAR originated as an outlet to create leather products that they wanted to use themselves. They believe in ruggedness, simplicity, durability, and timelessness. Awesome stuff chaps, we want to buy EVERYTHING!

And here’s a great video they made that digs a bit deeper into their story.

New theme: Method Dark

We think Method is one of the best ‘masonry’ grid themes out there. Clean, simple, clever with rock solid performance. And you obviously agree as it’s become one of our most popular themes and was chosen by the mighty Victoria & Albert Museum for their blog.

Trouble is that Method is a white theme and lots of you seem to love the darker styles (seems that Apple agree with this too). So meet Method Dark, just as ultra-minimal and clever as its brother but just a bit more enigmatic and handsome.

With Method Dark your images are really going to pop on the almost-black background. This elegant theme is all about pointing the spotlight back where it belongs - on your posts.

Particularly good for photo, graphic, art and portfolio style blogs, Method Dark features an elegant masonry grid that comes in multiple options, edge-to-edge or with your choice of gutter widths. We’ve also added some new improvements over the original Method like better social sharing, making your social icons more visible and redesigning the quote post.

When we said ultra-minimal we also meant ultra-flexible. You can move about all the elements of your header, easily set up popular tags as a dropdown in the main menu, have your choice of colour tint when your images are hovered, even hide ALL icons, tags and meta information if you want.

If you prefer the light version of Method please click here.

Killer features of Method Dark

  • Create edge-to-edge posts or use a choice of gutter widths
  • Use the ‘related posts’ Tumblr feature to keep people reading
  • Select ‘infinite scroll’ to load posts automatically as users scroll down
  • Easily set up your popular tags as a menu dropdown
  • Go ultra-minimal and hide all tags, meta and icons on the home page
  • Upload your own logo or use your Tumblr avatar
  • Move your avatar (or logo) and navigation left, right or centre
  • Easily set up gorgeous colour tints for when your images are hovered
  • Display note counts or dates on home page posts
  • Add the DISQUS plugin to get people talking about your content
  • Quickly display elegant social icons in your header
  • Choose from a tastefully curated set of Google fonts
  • Add Typekit or other font streaming services

Until you try Method Dark, you won’t know the power of the dark side.

We're getting into affiliate links

In a couple weeks we’re going to start adding something called “affiliate codes” to links on Tumblr that don’t already have one. Questions are healthy and natural, so let’s go through some:

What are affiliate codes? Basically, they tell a merchant that a customer came from Tumblr. And if there’s a sale, Tumblr may get a commission for the referral.

What’s going to change? Not much, really. Links will look and function exactly as they do now. Even personal affiliate codes, if you use them, will keep working normally.

Why are you doing this? One might argue that affiliate links can help slow or even reduce the cost of goods and services to zero as required for a truly post-capitalist economy.

Can I opt out? Of course. We wrote that right into our TOS. There’s a switch in settings that keeps Tumblr’s affiliate code off of links you post.

I have more questions. That’s why we wrote this FAQ.

Melon is out today

Who decided that websites should scroll up and down? If you like to think a little differently, then allow us to introduce Melon, our first horizontal scrolling theme.

Featuring the minimalist beauty of our classic themes but with the whole concept turned on its side, and it works like a dream. Unlike some other side scrolling themes you can use Melon with ALL post types, including video and text posts.

Particularly good for portfolio-style blogs, Melon is full of intuitive and clever features. We think photographers, illustrators and designers are going to love this one. Create a dropdown menu of your most important tags, hide your icons and even hide the navigation if you want.

Super clean, super minimal, super sideways.

Features of Melon

  • Sideways scroll on the home page
  • Hero/intro block with background image
  • Ultra-minimal options to hide dates, icons, tags, navigation
  • Expanded photosets on the home page
  • Dropdown of key tags in the menu
  • Custom logo upload
  • Related posts module to keep people reading

  • Tasteful social icons
  • The best Google fonts

Coming soon: Money from your Tumblr

On Thursday, we’re going to introduce ads on Tumblrs, so that later this year people can start making money from their blogs.

Tumblr is a place where brilliant, creative, funny, impossible people shape culture. Some of you have even turned your passions into jobs: book deals, music careers, paid gigs with the Creatrs program. Now, (soon!) that opportunity will be available to any eligible Tumblr—poet, musician, fan artist, and misfit weirdo memelord alike.

Some things you’re probably wondering:

Do you have to? Good question. No, you can turn off on-blog advertising in settings if you’re not comfortable with it.

When? Who? How? How much? Also good questions! We’re still working out the details of the partner program but as soon as we have details to share, we’ll make announcements right here on trusty Staff. Just so you know: You won’t be able to make money until you register for the program—which is coming soon.

Okay, cool. Ta ta for now!

Tumblr Theme Reset Glitch

Keep an eye on your blog theme. Tumblr has a recent glitch where some blog themes and theme settings are resetting to their defaults. If this bug strikes your blog, try recovering your custom theme to its latest backup.

From the “Recover Custom Theme” page, choose your blog from the drop-down menu (if needed). Click the “View backups” button. Revert to the latest theme backup then check your blog theme.

If the reversion doesn’t work, seek a cached copy of your blog and check the HTML source to manually restore your theme.
