“I remember the first time I saw Cate I was 13 years old and I went to the local movie theater to see ‘Elizabeth’. I remember when she came on screen. I can remember the feeling that washed over me seeing her with her piercingly blue eyes and her alabaster skin. Her ethereal grace and magnetism taking over the screen even in her silence, even in her stare. And from that day on, I remember following her and watching her, being seduced over and over with each performance. Each and every character distinct, wildly different from the next. I never knew what to expect from her. I could never predict a line or a feeling. I would go looking for Cate Blanchett but Cate Blanchett was never there. It was always someone else, someone new I had never seen before”—Rooney Mara

Cate Blanchett for Porter Magazine (2014)

“The Oscar is very beautiful, utterly mesmeric, but I don’t feel any more important because I have won one. It doesn’t mean I’m any better than anyone.”

cate blanchett as carol aird “Who is Carol? Carol is a shadowy character subjectively seen through Therese’s lens in the novel. And I think challenge that Phyllis risen to and achieved beyond my wildest expectations was by bring Carol to life on the page and giving her her own heartbeat, not only through the person that Therese thinks Carol  is but who she might possibly be. And so there’s a lot of invention. There’s a lot of references made to lawyers meetings and all of those stuffs but Phyllis has actually brought that to life with a real passionate but quiet dignity. I think Carol in a way is…she’s someone with an incredible sense of pride, and is intelligent and sensitive and aware enough to know the way the world works, and that she doesn’t fit within that world. But I think she thinks she’s found a way to operate that’s intensely lonely.” - C.B.

We’re setting up to do this shot, we just wanna see Cate sort of tugging this child along. He’s forgetting how to walk. And she walked off down the sidewalk and they kind of edged over to the edge of frame and disappeared behind the tree and then right at this moment the little boy tugs on her hand and then she bends down to find out what it is that he wants and he puckers up his lips and gives her this kiss. And I’m watching this on the monitor and I’m going “Oh my god, that’s amazing!”

“I don’t know how you are so familiar to me—or why it feels less like I am getting to know you and more as though I am remembering who you are. How every smile, every whisper brings me closer to the impossible conclusion that I have known you before, I have loved you before—in another time, a different place, some other existence.”
