AN ANNOUNCEMENT:

I'm dropping out of CampNaNo. I've realized that I don't particularly like the full blown 'novel' as a form. My writing is better when it's short -- when I can write it in fewer sittings, so I can focus. So, starting today, I'm shifting over to the short-story format -- stuff like Before the City Rises, or shorter, because I'm better at them, and I think they're easier for me. Besides, prose-writing is more of a hobby for me -- in my day-to-day, I dream of being a screenwriter and I work as a journalist. Most of my narrative prose is fanfiction, after all. I don't know when my next book will come out, but I'm sure it'll be worth reading.

Okay so my writing's been slow the last few days, but I am slowly chipping away at everything, so I'm not too worried. Writing a little is definitely better than not writing at all. Plus freelancing has been pretty work-heavy this month, which is actually fantastic.

Love as an offering…

To love is not to possess the other person or to consume all their attention and love. To love is to offer the other person joy and a balm for their suffering. This capacity is what we have to learn to cultivate.

An excerpt from my new novella, Before the City Rises

Notre Dame at night is beautiful, and haunting, and lonely. The faces of the gargoyles pit and crag and in them she sees faces she knows, faces she has seen haunting the gutters and alleys of Paris, and she nods to them. They have names, which are not known to her, and they have lives; she fights tomorrow so that those lives may be better in the future.
Her hands are cold, though the night is thick and warm; early June is ready and waiting for another day to dawn.
She smiles to herself, climbing the steps. Yes, tomorrow. Tomorrow, Lamarque, tomorrow, the barricades, tomorrow -- everything she has worked and lived for in these last several years. The city sparks with it, and the weight of tomorrow hums just under her breastbone, waiting.
Tomorrow, Paris will rise to honor Lamarque and fight for its freedom, and she will be there in the thick of it.

Before the City Rises is a 10,000 word lesbian romance story set in 1832 in Paris, in a world where some people are born with extraordinary gifts. Zephine, a revolutionary, finds one night of peace and joy with the last person she’d expect -- Nichole, a transgender woman she’s been arguing with for years.

Zephine is a French socialist on the eve of the June Rebellion -- but in a world where some people are born with superhuman gifts. Zephine is one such woman, and so are many of the insurgents she will fight beside come morning. Troubled by the coming dawn, she confronts the ironic Nichole -- a thorn in her side at the best of times -- and discovers that there is more to the woman than she ever thought to look for.
And on this one night, before the city rises, perhaps Nichole can teach her how to give herself one moment of peace and joy before the cataclysm.
BEFORE THE CITY RISES is a lesbian erotic novella with historical and sci-fi themes, featuring a trans woman as the love interest.

So this is the intro post!

Tomorrow, hopefully, my first novella will be up for sale on Amazon, so here’s me sort of introducing myself. I’m C.K., I’m 22, nonbinary, and a medicated epileptic (seizure free since ‘09, heck yeah), and I write queer and trans speculative fiction erotica.

Because we should be be allowed happy endings; we should be allowed to be celebratory and sexual and alive at the end of the story.

I also use the word queer a lot in my tumbling, so if you’re not comfortable with me using it in reference to my work or whatever, following me might not be the best idea. Please take care of yourself, first and foremost!

Anyway, this is the intro post, and hopefully in the morning I’ll be able to make a post with a link to my first novella, Before the City Rises.
