When Hori drew Izuku and Ochako saying that he used Spirited away as reference, it felt like a goodbye. I couldn’t shake that feeling off. Ochako looks like she is waving, crying, they’re in OLD costumes..but it makes sense now.

Ochako said goodbye to Izuku.. and embraced Toga instead. 🩷💛

Hori’s illustrations are always SYMBOLIC. But the canon is crystal clear.

He said there won’t be a scene EXACTLY like that but we will get something similar. He didn’t elaborate where or with whom.

He said he drew Izuku and Ochako having in mind how would their relationship be like IF he decided to develop them. IF. The key word.

Hori also said we should focus on Izuku and Ochako FALLING. Which is canonically a bad omen. They’re not floating in that illustration. Toga and Ochako are FLOATING and embracing each other.

So my takeaway from this is that instead of focusing on Izuku and trying to deepen her relationship with him, Ochako let go.. and turned to Toga instead, decided to embrace and accept HER. Because the one who needs her, is Toga. Izuku has Katsuki. She realised that during his apology. It’s why she thought of Toga during her speech..It’s why she went home to sleep after and hasn’t stayed to check up on Izuku or make sure he’s doing okay.

Because she knew Izuku was in good hands. She never looked his way again. And even on the cliff, she didn’t mind him being distant and she wanted to talk about Toga.

She chose TOGA. 💛🩷

And I always say, Toga is the priority here. Her finding love. So the ending being Ochako and Izuku (two people Toga loves) ending up together and excluding her yet again, would be extremely wrong. Especially after Ochako offered her eternity. It would hurt Toga and take away the only person from her who came to accept and understand her.

I love this parallel cause Ochako’s tape is making the symbol of infinity which has been mentioned in relation to her in the manga before.. because she offered her eternity to Toga.

Much like how Izuku’s black whip showcases his emotions and makes the shape of a BROKEN HEART after Izuku finds Katsuki’s body and reminds himself to control his heart, PUNCHES HIS CHEST and calms down because he’s been told Kacchan still has a chance to live.

You know, now that she’s admitted this, there’s definitely a parallel between Ochako loving the sight of Izuku doing his best even if he hurts himself versus Katsuki who would do ANYTHING just to STOP Izuku from doing his best to the point of hurting himself.

Hori isn’t writing Ochako to end up with Izuku. That has become very clear at this point.

Ochako had a crush on hero Deku. Idolises him, competed with him, Katuski.. loves Izuku.

Katsuki and Izuku push each other to be better. Katsuki WANTS to be on the same battlefield with Izuku to protect him. Because he knows him best. Ochako, doesn’t want this. If anything, she does look a little frustrated when Izuku shows up in the middle of HER battle. Because she didn’t want him there. She wanted to do this herself. And I think she knew her crush could never coexist with the envy she felt for him which is why she immediate rejected it.

If there's that kind of toxic competition in a relationship, it's better to break up.

Hori has written some thigh similar to this in his previous manga Oumagadoki Zoo. Where there’s a character called Uwabami, who crushes on the MC and idolises him, but the MC never shows any form of interest in her. He shows no interest in romance at all.

At the same time, a character called Kasai, truly loves Uwabami and his actions mirror the actions of bkdk for one another. Down to the cheesy “love wins in the end” which I predicted is gonna be the plot of the last MHA battle. After all, Gentle said love always triumphs in the end.

Even down to Kasai having his body pierced in holes to protect Uwabami.

Of course in the end, Uwabami takes Kasai’s hand to train with him. So this unrequited crush/unhealthy crush concept isn’t new to Hori. HE HAS WRITTEN IT BEFORE.

It is really strange that we cannot see her face as she’s saying this. Almost as if there’s something else she’s hiding but she decided to say this to connect to Toga.. perhaps we’ll find out the truth through inner narrations if there’s something more going on here. (Note she really just said “came to like” which doesn’t HAVE to be strictly romantic)

I don’t know she glossed over that crush very easily and she used the same word Toga uses. Plain, vague “Suki”.

Ochako knows that crush was what connected her and Toga. Perhaps this was a white lie because if she denies this crush, then she’s gonna destroy the only connection she has with her and she didn’t want that. I’m just saying.. it’s possible that there’s more to it than that.

I don’t doubt that at one point Ochako has at least convinced herself she has a genuine crush but perhaps there were other feelings included there like admiration and envy which made that crush impure and impossible to stand on its OWN!

Which is why the moment she realises she doesn’t actually wanna be like him in chapter 322, that crush is gone.

At the end of the day, crush or not, it changes absolutely nothing about bkdk because they belong to a whole different world. A world of their own. Their setup is clear. Ochako has distanced herself from Izuku after her speech. Whatever feelings she’s had, she’s let go.

Hori has shown us in chapter 11 where this is going. Denki asks Ochako out, Ochako ditched him for Izuku who then, ditched HER for Kacchan who actually waited for him.

Or this parallel all the way from the beginning of the manga.

Ochako has listed the phases that got her to where she is now.

First, her world revolved around her parents. She wanted to make them smile. Which prompted her to realise there are other people in the world too.. then, she grew to like Izuku who was the reason Ochako and Toga got connected and THAT’S why she’s here now and why she’s going to stop Toga. The way that crush was brought up so casually sounds like it simply doesn’t matter anymore. It’s one of the things that helped her grow and got her to where she is now.

That’s my whole takeaway from this. Of course, we need to hear more. Ochako’s PoV is still gone. Especially if Hori is going with bkdk canon, Ochako has to spell out her thoughts on why and when exactly did she decide to drop her feelings for Izuku. Izuku also always felt sort of like a celebrity crush. Someone untouchable for both Ochako AND Toga and the fact they BOTH “fell” for him, always made it clear in my eyes that none of them are ending up with him but that instead, he was used as a plot device to bring these two girls together. Chapter 348 shows perfectly how out of place he is between them. The only way Hori sent him there is to show exactly that and to get the one Izuku ACTUALLY loves, die longing for him.

So that’s it..

Bkdk is ready to crown their romantic relationship after years of pining and knowing everything about each other. After being developed passed the platonic point where there’s nowhere else to go.. 🧡💚

Togachako on the other hand..is the beginning of something beautiful. Two girls who’s love has only started blossoming. 🩷💛

So the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy reference makes more sense after the latest chapters.. “you only kill the ones you love”. Toga loves Ochako, she just stabbed her and she’s dying.. and we know these two eventually become friends.. and then, LOVERS.

Color scheme of the covers is also the same..light green and red title, light green magazine label, same shade.

MHA is a queer story. That much has become evident and I can’t wait to see what Hori has in store for us for the rest of it.

Look, I don’t wanna get everyone’s hopes up, but I might have to get everyone’s hopes up

My initial thoughts on chapter 395 were to be enveloped in the tragedy of this ending. I could already tell some of the criticisms that would come at it, but I was also interested in thoroughly considering the chapter as fairly as possible. Whether or not it involves stale tropes, such tropes still have the potential to bring meaning and emotion–and to be honest, MHA has been pretty good at that since the get-go. The manga is pretty much defined by refreshing and playing with stale shounen tropes. I am willing to give this chapter as-is a chance. I comforted friends who were hit hard by the chapter. I allowed myself to feel the sorrow ushered in by Himiko Toga’s chosen end.

But then I started translating the chapter, and my melancholy didn’t last fucking long.

Because…I’m gonna be real with you, there are a LOT of questions this chapter raises, but only if you’re paying attention.

So like.

Look.

I don’t wanna get your hopes up.

Himiko Toga may really be dead.

I don’t actually know how this will all play out.

But…

LET ME TELL YOU WHY THIS IS SUS AS HELL

People on twitter finally figuring out what @dekacchannn has been saying forever:

Bakugo is connected to OFA.

Yah! He can see All Might's vestige! He has OFA stars in his eyes!!!

....

Now for my interpretation and speculation that I don't see anyone talking about...

Bakugo freaking KNEW he was tapping bits of OFA WAY before the battle. That's why he's not at all surprised to see the AM vestige, and just says "Oh. Right.."

It perfectly explains why at UA again, he is looking so uncomfortable, sweating bullets, explaining his new (saving Izuku unlocked) move to Izuku/Deku. He's not just sweating because that's his thing. He never just sweats in battle like that!

Sweating bullets gets used a lot to convey intense/awkward discomfort. I think he was panicked about breaching the topic of OFA power up! But Izuku totally blanked him... Bakugo didn't really wanna have this confusing conversation to start with (but I believe he was trying to broach it anyway). So when Izuku doesn't respond openly, he drops it immediately.

Like Deku, he withheld important information about how he unlocked it -and what it means- because their relationship feels like a fragile, intense mess. It's way too important for him to jeapordise.

Bakugo was very insecure and afraid here!

And I don't think Bakugo knows what to make of the OFA thing, or do about it. Izuku clearly has no idea, or he'd say something, right? He had an opening, and nothing?

He knows his feelings for Izuku are intense.. Everybody does. But the well goes deeper, or he wouldn't be afraid to talk about something so important, involving feelings he's already revealed.

I totally agree with theories that it's a love connection, not a reminant of a non-manga movie -even if some crossover characters appear. There's no way Horikoshi doesn't want his beloved manga to stand on its own.

And his beloved manga talks about people being in love, what's in their hearts, feeling like dying without their person, overwhelming emotions bending rules, and Deku's control your heart (over Bakugo) plotline.

I also wonder if the reason Bakugo reacted so strongly to Deku holding his hand out to Aoyama is because it was symbolic of Deku lending his strength (and compassion) to him. Bakugo may have worked out that his OFA connection works, because in some way, honorable Deku has had his hand extended to him -for as long as he can remember. Because that's what Deku does. Deku is a saint. And maybe OFA is an extension of that for him.

I think that OFA connection strengthened too, when Bakugo learned how DEEP that part of Deku went for him.

He cannot dismiss Deku's feelings as him being a bleeding heart over every person when Shigaraki is telling him that for Deku, he is 'The' person -and is bent on killing him because of it! That's shocking (also terrifying) information.

Remember Bakugo said he didn't expect the apology to change anything between them, but Shig knowing about 💚Bakugo💚 means he was unmistakeably Deku's closest person, before he even apologised!

Bakugo feels so much for Izuku, but thought he had to start mending things to even be considered a real friend... Especially since Deku has so many friends and close people! He just saw them all pour out their deep affections to bring him home to UA. He does not think he is special.

But Izuku has a secret! (At least from Bakugo, no one else could possibly be confused at this point.)

So Shigaraki taunts Bakugo for falling behind Deku. He's just a minnow. But all he can focus on is something to the effect of -'Holy shit. He loves me. He loves me.. I need him to know that I-.. I need to live up to him! Izuku...'

The secret feelings reveal made him brave and honest with his own heart. There's nothing left but longing to be worthy of him, and be with him. He makes his last stand for him. And in the end, he reaches out for Izuku too -even though Izuku is not there with his own hand this time.

And this is when we first see the AFO stars are in his eyes. He does reach him. Or at least their connection. And that's why we see All Might, and why Bakugo is not surprised. But Bakugo seems resigned as though it's too late. He's already reminiscing.. But I believe All Might is going tell him it's not over. That he has to save Young Midoriya, and how.

What else could he possibly be there to say?

I can't wait for Izuku to find about Kacchan being OFA love-bonded to him.

“The reason you’re you is because you never give up on winning, right?”

Katsuki loves Izuku so much that he values what Izuku thinks of him more than anything. This is exactly how Izuku feels about him too. Katsuki staked his whole life on his opinion because he knows without even needing to be told, his determination to win is what Izuku has always seen inside him and adored about him. Katsuki getting up to fight again, while knowing it’s most likely futile, is an action of love towards Izuku. By acting in the way Izuku loves, he wants to be loved.

Regardless of what happens to Kacchan from here on, in it’s own incomplete and tragic way, this is still peak romance and no one could convince me of otherwise. Hidden behind the tangible despair of unconnected-ness, the desires and longing that slip right through his fingers, is the deepest love for Izuku that has ever seeped out to the surface. It’s right here. You are meant to be feeling this. Feel the sad and love-filled wish as he reaches out to Izuku. He longs to hear Izuku’s voice telling him he did good one more time. He wants his hero.

‘To you, the hero who always tried to save me no matter what… To you, who I always felt was going to leave me far behind… To you, who is my whole world and the one I love: ‘Are you watching me now? What do you think of me?’

And it’s not simply about getting the speed to catch up so they can be heroes together, but the almighty hope he carries within his soul that his feelings towards Izuku will somehow reach him. They still have yet to. And they must. It’s only by going with Katsuki on this road of grief and sadness born from his distance with Izuku, that we can truly feel the joy of them being connected and as one later.

Ch 362 feels like a curse being cast over us to hide the undeniable truth we’ve always known: they are connected, always have been and always will be. Neither of them are meant to do this alone. This is their story, their path to greatness, their fight and their triumph. Izuku can’t possibly do this without his Kacchan to keep him balanced and to telepathically read through his plans like a book and to charm him with his best winner hero smirk and to make jokes and share laughter with and to simp All Might with and to lift him when he falls and to hold his hand and-

Thanks, Kohei “I can’t write romance lol” Horikoshi-sensei… ~Dispel~

Omae: Complexity of Self-Expression and Intimacy with the Japanese “You”

The anime adaption of chapter 322 is rapidly approaching, so I wanna talk about something really interesting: as far as I can tell, Izuku is the only person Katsuki has ever used the pronoun omae (おまえ) towards in-canon. Furthermore, he has only used omae towards Izuku on three occasions.

The first time is after Deku vs. Kacchan 2 in chapter 120.

The second time is right after his apology in chapter 322. (Katsuki actually uses omae four times in a row in this scene.)

(We'll get to the third time later, just you wait.)

Why does Katsuki address Izuku differently in these scenes? To answer this, we’re gonna commit some language nerdery.

First, let’s be real about the fact that Japanese pronouns can be complicated. There are a ton of them. You learn the common uses—like you could say that, broadly, omae tends to be used by guys for their friends and romantic partners. But the reality is that in a high-context language like Japanese, pronouns can come across wildly differently depending on who uses it, to whom, with what tone, and in what context.

It is difficult to generalize real-life usage, so to be clear, I am talking about MHA as a piece of media. I could try to tell you that omae is rude but also friendly but also condescending but also comedic but also confrontational but also affectionate—and so on, but that wouldn’t help you understand what Katsuki’s omae to Izuku means and why it feels significant.

The thing is, Izuku and Katsuki can each say omae and mean completely different things, because their normal way of speaking tells us how to interpret their words.

When Izuku speaks, he is polite and considerate. He uses the boyish first-person pronoun boku (僕). In Japanese, avoiding second-person pronouns is the polite thing to do; you use the person’s surname and an appropriate suffix instead, and this is the tactic Izuku uses to address others. When he does say “you,” it is usually the familiar kimi (君) towards Katsuki.

We see Izuku use omae in only a few circumstances: he uses it towards himself during inner monologues when he is trying to figure out what to do or compel himself to act, and he uses it when he faces All For One.

Both of these involve what I think of as “tough talk”—Izuku talks tough to himself to push past his fears and be a hero. With AFO, he is talking to a villain, someone he has to defeat. From someone like Izuku who speaks with such politeness and humility, omae reads as aggressive and confrontational.

Katsuki, on the other hand, is always aggressive and confrontational. He uses the masculine, somewhat boastful first-person pronoun ore (俺) and the second-person pronoun temee (てめえ) towards just about everybody. Temee is an extremely rude, combative word; Japanese descriptions usually point out that it reads like fightin’ words—it’s what you’d call an opponent, someone you are confronting, challenging, or belittling. As mentioned, you’re supposed to avoid “you” words to be polite, so the fact that Katsuki whips out temee constantly and makes up insulting nicknames instead of using anybody’s real name is just like, damn, dude!

Unlike Izuku, Katsuki sounds like he is challenging everyone all the time. This means that, coming from him, omae actually seems gentler.

After Deku vs. Kacchan 2, he opens his sentence with omae, and Izuku looks startled by this.

They just had a huge, emotional fistfight, and Katsuki… isn’t addressing him as an opponent, like he always has before. For once, he is addressing Izuku not as his enemy, but his equal.

This scene is the first time Katsuki properly grapples with the truth of their mutual weaknesses and comes to an understanding about it. It leaves him frustrated and unsure, but he walks away seeing himself and Izuku as being on the same side.

Because he takes All Might's words to heart: they are two halves of what makes a hero. They need to learn from each other and push each other to truly reach their best—as rivals, not enemies.

In chapter 322, Katsuki talks Izuku through how he felt about him all these years. He goes over all the things he's had to face to see how wrong he was, to see his own weakness and Izuku's strength. The whole time, he uses the "you" word he always has: temee.

But when it comes time to tell Izuku his true feelings, he calls Izuku by his given name, apologizes, and then right away he says this:

This is a direct call-back to the core question that Katsuki posed to Izuku during Deku vs. Kacchan 2: "Is my way of admiring All Might wrong?"

The second half to that question has always been, implicitly, "Does that mean yours is right?"

Here, Katsuki acknowledges Izuku fully as All Might's successor and affirms that Izuku's path is not wrong, using omae to tell him so. And then he uses it three more times to convince Izuku to come back with them and fight together, "because saving people is how we win."

To me, omae in this scene comes across with such softness. He's speaking with more humility than we've ever seen, both in what he's conveying and his word choice. (There is a whole other conversation to be had about Katsuki's word choice for "I'm sorry," but that is for a different time.)

This omae is not just a sign that he sees Izuku as his equal, it's expressing care for him. Katsuki sacrificed his life for Izuku, telling him, "Stop trying to win this on your own." He is trying so hard to make Izuku understand: Come back, I was wrong. Come back, I care about you.

Which brings us to the third time Katsuki uses omae: chapter 362.

That's right, the infamous "Can I still catch up to you?" / "Can I still reach you?" line uses omae.

Here's the thing that's unique about this omae: it's in Katsuki's head. This is internal monologue; he isn't talking out loud to Izuku, he isn't trying to convey something to him face-to-face, he is just thinking about Izuku.

The word choice isn't for anyone else's benefit or any external purpose: this is just how Katsuki sees him.

I can't overstate how soft, vulnerable, and sincere this moment is for Katsuki. And what gets me about him thinking of Izuku as omae is, it makes me wonder, "How long has he thought of Izuku this way?"

When did Izuku stop being temee in his head?

Changing how you address someone is a big deal in Japanese. Whether it's a name or suffix change (Deku -> Izuku) or a pronoun change (temee -> omae), it represents a significant shift in the emotional dynamics of a relationship.

It crops up a lot in media as a dramatic moment of intimacy, sometimes even being a part of love confessions. This heightened drama is exactly what we see with Katsuki's apology when he calls him Izuku.

Katsuki addresses only Izuku with his given name and omae, and in the whole run of the series, he only uses omae in a few select instances. I would argue that this is really important, subtle character writing.

Looking at the scenes, at least to me, each omae reads as progressively more honest and intimate. Each time Katsuki uses it, he is reaching for Izuku. Each time, it means more.

Heroes Rising novel translation (6/7)

This is a translation (part 1) of the novelization of Heroes Rising. The novel has been written based on the movie (written by Anri Yoshi, who also writes the School Briefs). There is no English translation, so I am translating from the Italian version.

This is THE scene.

Scene 9 (Deku giving Bakugou One for All)

Now that he (Nine) had found Katsuma, he started advancing towards him with an arrogant smile. Bakugou was visibly upset, until Izuku's voice called him. When he turned around, the other was looking at him with eyes full of plea and challenge, and his voice was serious.

"There is one way... only one way..."

At those words, Bakugou frowned, but he immediately guessed what the other was trying to say.

"....!"

He was speechless, seeing Izuku push his own left hand towards him, the same hand that was wounded and bloodied. The words of the greatest hero were filling both of their chest.

"My quirk, it is like the Olympic flame, someone passed it to me... it is the power to give power..."

Izuku was about to give Bakugou One for All. His fingers, stretched and shaking, were covered in blood. To give One for All it was indispensable to have the will to do so, to be able to allow the one's own DNA to fuse with the recipient's. In other words, Izuku wanted to donate him his quirk through the DNA in his own blood. For a moment, Bakugou hesitated, thinking.

Even if he knew that that power existed, he had never wanted it. He was sure he already had the strenght he needed to get to the top. But for a useless nerd/puppet...

When he was younger, when he had fallen into the river, that childhood friend of his had offered his hand and asked: "Are you okay?" From that moment, that moment where it had seemed like Izuku had noticed that spark of fear Bakugou had, Izuku had become someone to hate. He had felt an undefined, hard to pinpoint, disgust, a sensation that persisted even now. The recklessness with which he had followed his dream of become a hero and had thrown himself into danger, even without a quirk... his bottomless stupidity with which he was giving away the quirk he finally had obtained... Not even a whole life would have been enough for Bakugou to understand, and he did not want to.

He was reluctant. But that was the best choice they had, and the only chance at victory.

"K-kacchan."

"Heroes have so many people to protect... that is why I won't lose!"

"Deku..."

Izuku desperately stretched the tips of his fingers, and finally, Bakugou started to do the same.

"A hero always destroy any obstacle!"

Protect and win. Both stretched their fingers, convinced that this was the only way. For a second, the shaking tips of their fingers missed each others for the agitation, but soon they were back to desperately search for each others, one to give, the other to receive.

Finally, the tips of their fingers touched. When Izuku's blood slid into his wounds, a great power spread through Bakugou. A great strenght pooled into his fisted hand.

Determined to get to Katsuma, Nine was surprised by a powerful light and the roar of an explosion. His familiars, which had been trapping the kids up till now, came out of the dust before crumbling like sand, moaning in pain.

"What..."

Among the fog, Izuku and Bakugou were back on the ground. Nine wiped away the cloud of dust, ready, eyes on the sudden anomaly. In front of his eyes, the two teens slowly stood up.

"After this, will you still be able to use it?"

"I don't know... but... All Might protected us with the last embers of his power, even after he passed the quirk."

(... brief description of Katsuma and Mahoro going to Shoji)

"Your dream will end here too, you know that right?"

"I don't care. There is no other way. And All Might won't mind that it is you. Someone who knows the secret and admired the same person I did..."

Izuku's voice had only trust and convinction, which did not fail to provoke some kind of disgust in Bakugou's heart. Disgust born from the absolute absence of any hesitation in throwing away his dream and giving his life to save someone else.

When Bakugou had found out about One for All, after the fight where they had opened their heart to each others with the utmost sincerity, Bakugou had started to perceive it. That characteristic that the hero he had always adored also had. This hero they both admired was the sole reason that bound together two kids who were so different.

"All Might is really great!"

"I will also become a hero like him!"

They both had pointed at the same person, Bakugou admiring his infinite strengh and Izuku his infinite kindness.

"In any situation, at the end..."

"He always win!"

"Even if the situation is desperate..."

"He saves people with a smile!"

Keeping in their heart the admiration that they had had as children, they both collected their power.

1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!

I dare say slight improvements have been made. One year ago I realised that if I ever want to see art of my Warden character Layenne Tabris I will have to learn to do it myself…like a peasant!! So here we are. I really enjoy this journey and if we’re lucky I’ll end up making Layenne prettier the more I keep drawing lol.

Once again I must thank @yaminosonarhedgiebat for encouraging me always, even in the very beginning when my art looked like in the secons picture. I’m so grateful to you, bestie!!

Hnnn no problem mi sweet amiga!! I'm just so proud of you and for not giving up for a whole year!! Look at this progress!! Aaahhh!!! ;;A;;

Layenne Tabris fighting her way out of Vaughan’s estate. I redesigned the wedding outfit because let’s be real, the original is….not pretty. Of course she cut off half of the skirt for obvious reasons. It used to be her mother’s dress.

With this piece I learned a way more efficient way to colour and tried to give a lot of things more structure than I have before. I think it’s a step forward!

I must extend a big thank you to @yaminosonarhedgiebat who basically showed me how to draw the face lol. Thank you, bestie!!

“Everyone thinks he’s mentally ill but he actually just has superpowers.”

Okay, but like, what if both? Can we get a superhero with a mental illness depicted in a nominally positive way? That’s not just a cheap plot twist? Is that really too much to ask?

And not the whole “I’m psychotic and I could lose control of my powers at any moment” shit. I’m sick of that.

How about “I’m psychotic, but my telepathy helps a lot. If I think I’m hallucinating, my friends can let me see what they see and hear what they hear to keep me grounded in reality.”

Or you know, maybe someone whose mental illness and superpowers are unrelated. A speedster with depression who knows they /could/ clean their apartment in under four seconds, but would rather just watch Netflix and eat chocolate. A super strong hero who also has ocd and keeps rearranging their furniture, and sure it’s physically easy, but it’s still a pain.

Like, literally just in the few minutes it took me to write this post, I probably already came up with a good 30 character concepts. It’s not that hard, as long as you like, you know, think of mentally ill people as people and not plot devices.
