i think the ending was bittersweet, and i was NOT having any of that bittersweet nonsense as a child, nosiree, so i have a vaguely dissatisfied vibe when i think of it

they also broadcast the 70s japanese (very faithful) adaptation of the little mermaid on network tv at some point during that same few years, and OH let me tell YOU little baby me DID NOT KNOW a cartoon was ALLOWED to be straight up tragic. i was SO on edge watching that shit bc i already had enough genre savvy to sense the tragedy coming, so i kept self soothing the entire time by thinking, “this is a kid’s cartoon, it will definitely have a happy ending!”
