Aubrey and the sun. I can't remember now exactly what came first. It's sort of a chicken-egg situation, where I can't remember if I chose the name Aubrey or the fire theming first. Aubrey is a reference to Aubrey from The Adventure Zone: Amnesty, who had fire powers (and a pet rabbit). So my Aubrey was made to be a fire themed bunny. Everything from her skin and hair color were meant to be warm and evoke the sun. This is also, of course, why I chose Azeyma for her. I had no idea about Azem at the time but my husband, a long time player, said Azeyma was a good choice and seemed a bit amused.

This lucky Azem coded happenstance continued in the brief bit of background I imagined for her before the game. She liked to climb as high as she could in the trees (something I liked doing in my own youth), soak in the sun, and look out in the world. She was inspired to leave the jungle during all those days looking out at the horizon, a need to adventure out pulling at her spirit.

So, you can imagine how delighted I was to find out about Azem. About the link to the sun and to that sort of wanderer's soul. It very much shaped how I wrote about Aubrey but it was also there as soon Emet-Selch mentioned being able to see the color of souls, before I knew how fitting it would be. Aubrey, I knew immediately, would have a soul the color of the sun. Which is all to say, yes, that fic was very much a long earned celebration of a happy accident.
