Mario Party Superstars has an unintuitive way of determining the winners of minigames whereby it does not matter what the state of the game is during the celebration, only what it is when the timer reaches 0.

In the footage, Yoshi and Donkey Kong are competing in Snowball Summit, with Donkey Kong being thrown off right before the end, but the game still counting both him and Yoshi as winners.

This is due to the fact that when the timer reached 0, Donkey Kong was still, just barely, technically above the playing field. While he was laterally outside the field and would also be below it only one frame later, the game looked exclusively at his height coordinate at the 0 second mark, and declared him to have won the game.

I think that, particularly as you get older, you start getting a lot choosier about what popular media you actually acknowledge as popular (which partly comes from not keeping up with new things as feverishly, but also for a lot of people comes from being annoyed with kids)

this is one of the more insidious creative poisons, because if you're being selective like that, you start to think that there's an upward trend in the production value of popular things when there's... really not

the single greatest motivation killer is to accept an ever-higher baseline quality expectation for media instead of realising that being distinctive is enough

there are two things that should probably be internalised if you're going to be making thoughtful things aimed at adults:

neither of these are bad things, but you've got to swallow them like pills and accept they exist, then exorcise them from your mind entirely

it's like literary stomach medicine, and while you probably shouldn't be drinking it all the time, you also shouldn't be putting it off until you're spitting up gastric juice into your coffee mug

don't "don't worry about it," but don't ignore the symptoms of powercreeping yourself

Good people don't give a fuck what you look like. Seriously. I regularly don't wear make up and no one cares (my mom used to but she's given up and wears less herself now!). I was told all my life having acne was gross and bad. It's not. Acne is a thing adults have and it's fine (I'm not a doctor don't yell at me). It's fine if your hair isn't perfect, it's fine if your nails are chipped, it's fine if you have a pimple anyone who comments is a dick, it's FINE. LIVE HOW YOU WANT.

But for the love of your family and your body wear sunscreen and moisturize!! Skin cancer is serious and not to be taken lightly.
