WRITING ADVICE!!!

"Pain is Plain."

Let's face it; saying " it was very painful," falls just a little flat. You want something that will empower your writing, enrichen it. Using words that vividly describe a situation or feeling will help your readers "visualize" the scene. It will make them wonder " How is the main character going to survive this?" Or, if the hero is inflicting rightful pain on the antagonist, it will cause them to cheer and anticipate what their favorite character will do next. But none of this will work if you describe a deadly wound as "It really hurt." Here are some alternate words for "painful."

Excruciating

Seering

Stabbing

Ripping

Blood-curling

Paralyzing

Unimaginable

Writhing

Twisting

Shot

Shredding

Tearing

Agonizing

Indescribable

Intolerable

Harrowing

Torturing

Torturous

Aching

Cramping

Dull aching

Burning

Cold sensation

Electric shock

Nagging

Intense

Pins and needles

Sharp

Spasms

Splitting

Tender

Throbbing

Tingling

Tiring

Exhausting

Acute

Burning

Chapped

Nauseating

MILD PAIN: PAIN YOUR CHARACTER NOTICES BUT IT DOESN'T DISTRACT THEM.

Pinch

Sting

Smart

Stiffness

MODERATE PAIN: PAIN THAT DISTRACTS BUT DOESN'T TRULY STOP YOUR CHARACTER.

Ache

Throb

Distress

Flare

SEVERE PAIN: PAIN YOUR CHARACTER CAN'T IGNORE.

Agony

Anguish

Suffering

Thoes

Torment

Stabbing

OBLITERATING: KIND OF PAIN THAT PROHIBITS ANYTHING BUT BEING IN PAIN. (AND DOING ANYTHING TO ALLEVIATE IT.)

Ripping

Tearing

Writhing

Got other ideas or something you'd like to ask me? Go right ahead! I'd Love to hear from you!

Actually, let me add a few things to this because I love writing and describing pain, SO-

Break the rules a little. Personify the bitch. Even if you don't use words that have intrinsic painful connotations, make it invasive. Show the path of the shock of sensation. Tangling up their veins and burrowing through their muscle. Spiking tight around their bones and ripping up their throat.

Just play around with it - like. Wtf does 'spiking tight' mean? Usually we wouldn't say 'spiking around', but I sure tf just did because it felt right. Go with your gut and have fun with it.

Someone made the joke about Buck being passed around each 118 house like Hoover for his recovery

But I suggest the opposite

Every single person in the 118 just starts showing up at his place unprompted with increasingly ridiculous excuses.

“Cap cooked too much lasagna and we didn’t know what to do with the leftovers”

“The babysitter canceled, can I drop Jee here for half an hour while I run to the bank? We can have some tea when I’m back!”

“Can I use your dryer? Mine broke last week”

“I thought we were watching the game today, what do you mean? Yes, I’ve always been into rugby”

“Chris has to do research for his homework and our wifi wasn’t working. You don’t kind, do you?”

I want this man to be so loved that he’s sick of it. I want him to not know a moment’s peace. His entire family is made of caregivers and he will suffer their hovering because they almost lost him.

I wanna talk about that insane man spending a week in a hospital without showering or sleeping and living off soy milk and clearly thinking “I never got to tell him. I should have told him. If I could go back I’d tell him” and then he finally gets the chance to talk and what actually comes out of his mouth is: bzz bzz.

Buck surviving the lightning strike and going back to work means that Hen has to go to that bakery (she goes to the same one every time) to get him a 'welcome-back' cake (one which will have a terrible pun written on it in icing, something like "we're not shocked you're back"), and you just know that every time she walks into that bakery the staff drop what they're doing because they just know that it's going to be something absolutely wild
