I read through all your posts about Alysanne Targaryen as Maegor's daughter and am now in a rabbit hole. Thank you. I've been thinking about Maegor's wives and which one of Henry VIII's wives they represent. Ceryse is Cathrine of Aragon and Alys is Anne Boleyn. The others are hard to pin for me since there isn't a lot. What do you think? Would Maegor's reign have been more interesting if his marriages had more similarities to those of Henry VIII?

I think this is where we run into a number of problems regarding the way GRRM wrote Fire & Blood specifically and the way he setup Westeros more generally.

For one, the fairly homogenized nature of southron culture as well as the oversimplification of religious institutions and history means you can't quite get the same dynamism as from real life European history, with its dizzying array of languages, cultures, cuisines, fashions, etc., to mention nothing of the then-ongoing Protestant Reformation. I suppose GRRM could have had Maegor convert to the Old Gods a la Julian (II) the Apostate or the Drowned God (you just know the Ironborn are the one race on the surface of Planetos that would say King Maegor the Good with a completely straight face) or even R'hllor, which would be the best choice in terms of worldbuilding opportunities in my opinion.

Moving on, we run into a handful of problems with Maegor specifically, one of them being the length of his reign. Look, while I can't deny Maegor ruling for 6 years and 66 days is incredibly cheeky, it also isn't anywhere close to Henry VIII's 36 years as king. With so little room timeline-wise, there isn't a lot of flexibility when it comes to telling new stories and fleshing out preexisting ones and all that is before you factor in Maegor himself.

I won't hold back. For all GRRM's talk of moral ambiguity, the human heart in conflict with itself, good men who were bad kings and bad men who were good kings, etc., his Targaryen monarchs are, for the most part, numbingly one-note. Aegon I is a literal enigma, Aenys is weak, Maegor cruel, Viserys I a party animal, Aegon II and Rhaenyra mirror-images of each other in their disqualifying vices, etc. As I've written before with my post reimagining Maegor as more of a Ivan (IV) the Terrible figure there was room to make him a genuinely controversial figure of historiography but instead GRRM doubled down on sensationalism and apathy-inducing slasher porn for lack of a better word. The fact Maegor is also the first and last of Visenya's line just adds more salt to the wound but that's part of GRRM's more general (and for me personally, vexing) habit of keeping family trees incredibly small.

(I do recall another alternative someone once brought up to the late Steven Attewell. Namely, turning Maegor into the Westerosi version of Macbeth by way of Der Untergang.)

This brings me to my semifinal point. GRRM didn't have to write Fire & Blood as Procopius' Secret History on steroids with a dash of Suetonius' Lives of Twelve Caesars and I, Claudius (the entire Saera episode is practically lifted wholesale from the scandal that envelops Augustus' daughter, Julia) but he did, which is doubly disappointing because not only does the final product suck quality-wise as a result but also because there were so many other avenues available to him.

He could have written Fire & Blood as a proper history (with less focus on the sex lives of teenage girls for one) or as a mirror for princes or as a dialogue between two characters or even as a character study. You can even see GRRM struggling with the constraints imposed by his use of Gyldayn in certain sections like the death of Maelor and the entire Hour of the Wolf episode, where you get reams of dialogue and characterization as well as more traditional narrative trappings like build-up, mood setting, etc.

Now, to answer your actual question (lol), I don't think any of Henry VIII's other wives map well onto Maegor's. Tyanna is, more or less, his female counterpart in terms of cruelty and zero redeeming features and entirely a fantasy construct. Elinor and Jeyne are both married to Maegor for only a year (with poor Jeyne dying in childbirth because Jeyne Westerlings, like the Brackens, Peakes, and Florents, cannot catch a break in Westeros) and before said marriage takes place neither appears on the page. As for Rhaena, well, credit where its due, she was a rare (and unexpected) highlight of Fire & Blood.

Hello, I have a question regarding Brienne IV, AFFC:

“He agreed. "Brune's too old to go climbing wallwalks, and his sons and grandsons went off to the wars. No one left in there but wenches, and a snot-nosed babe or three."

It was on her lips to ask her guide which king Lord Brune had espoused, but it made no matter any longer. Brune's sons were gone; some might not be coming back.”

Based off this brief passage, who do you think the Lords of Crackclaw Point likely supported during the War of the Five Kings?

Let's go through each of the candidates, shall we?

  1. Joffrey (On the surface highly unlikely given House Lannister's actions towards the end of Robert's Rebellion and the fact Dick Crabb boasts in AFFC "we're all good dragon men, up Crackclaw way" BUT we do need something to explain why throughout the war Tywin is consistently said to have 20K men and him enforcing conscription on Crackclaw Point best fits that bill. Also helps explain why they don't show up to defend King's Landing against Stannis in the lead-up to the Battle of the Blackwater.)
  2. Robb (Unlikely given the fact Crackclaw Point has never been part of the Riverlands and one of Robb's chief vassals, the Mootons of Maidenpool, have been historical enemies of Crackclaw Point.)
  3. Renly (Possible were it not for the fact Renly died early on in the war and never even reached the Crownlands.)
  4. Stannis (More likely than most given his opposition to House Lannister as well as the presence of other Crownlands houses within his army but if that were the case, I think GRRM would have mentioned it by now.)
  5. Balon (Out of the question. Not only are the Ironborn universally despised but they're also on the opposite side of the continent from the Crownlands.)

What do you think caused one of Walder Frey’s few positive traits: making sure all of his family members are looked after, at least materially?

I think two things factored into this quality Walder has (and instilled in his heir, Ser Stevron):

  1. Walder's formative years in the context of the Blackfyre Rebellions (particularly the Second) instilled in him a very strong sense of family loyalty (as well as an equally, if not stronger, sense of self-preservation and caution)
  2. Being able to take care of so many family members is a way for him to show off his wealth and rub it in the faces of other houses that look down on him for being "nouveau riche"

And now his watch has ended...

Found out earlier today Steven Attewell (or as some of us knew him, Race for the Iron Throne) has passed away and honestly I'm still in shock. While I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, I know from my interactions with him here on Tumblr that Steven was an honest and caring soul whose passion for a variety of topics ranging from comics and ASOIAF to politics and economics could be infectious at times. (Scratch that, ALL the time.) Indeed, if it hadn't been for him, I would never have gotten on Tumblr myself. He will be sorely missed by many, including myself. Condolences to his friends and family in this unimaginably difficult time.

Our new Dunk and Egg!

Dexter Sol Ansell, playing Egg (the future King Aegon V Targaryen), is best known for playing the (very) young Coriolanus Snow in the opening scene for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

I think Dexter is a perfect choice for Egg! He looks very HBO-Targaryen, and IMO has a strong resemblance to Leo Ashton (young Aemond in HOTD S1), as well as Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra). Of course he'll be shaving his head (poor kid), and with those light eyebrows, I'm sure he will be very very egg, lol.

Our new Dunk, Peter Claffey, from Portumma, Ireland, used to be a rugby player (he's 1.96m, 6'5"), but left the sport in 2018 and got into acting. Here's a clip from his agent's site, and for more videos see here.

I personally think this clip is highly convincing of Peter's potential in this role. "We could use a man-mountain like you", indeed.

Do you think Maester Aemon voted for Bloodraven when Brynden was selected as the new Lord Commander of the Nights Watch?

Impossible to say at this point really. Bloodraven in 239 AC is not the same man he was in 233 AC but that doesn't really tell us anything about his relationship with Maester Aemon. Something for Bran's TWOW chapters or (more likely in my estimate) a future D & E tale to explore (possibly one covering Dunk's journey to the Wall as part of Maester Aemon's honor guard), especially since voting is supposed to be anonymous.

Without negating any of his own personal faults, do you agree or disagree with the notion that Jon Arryn, especially if we got to see more of him in some late Dunk and Egg novellas, would generally come across as an intelligent and kind man to those who knew him? Someone Ned and Robert could genuinely be seen to look up to (well, mainly Ned) and influence the people and politicians they became?

I think Jon Arryn is one of those characters who is exactly as people describe him. In other words, honorable and competent while still being a product of his time and place.

What do you think Arianne and Quentyn Martell’s respective friend groups (Sylva Santagar, Garin and Andrey Dalt for Arianne; Gerris Drinkwater, Archibald and Cletus Yronwood for Quentyn) would think of each other and what would their hypothetical interactions look like, in your opinion?

I think Arianne's antagonistic relationship with Quentyn, coupled with Quentyn's negative past experiences with the Sand Snakes (whom Arianne is noticeably close to) would color any interaction between their individual social circles and not in a good way.

Some tips for using a few words to describe voices:

1. Tone Words: Use tone words to convey the emotional quality of a voice. For example, you can describe a voice as "melodic," "soothing," "sharp," "gentle," or "commanding" to give readers a sense of the tone.

2. Pitch and Range: Mention the pitch and range of the voice. Is it "deep," "high-pitched," "raspy," or "full-bodied"? This can provide insight into the character's age, gender, or emotional state.

3. Accent and Diction: Describe the character's accent or diction briefly to give a sense of their background or cultural influences. For instance, "British-accented," "Southern drawl," or "formal."

4. Volume: Mention the volume of the voice, whether it's "whispering," "booming," "murmuring," or "hushed."

5. Quality: Use terms like "velvet," "silken," "gravelly," "honeyed," or "crisp" to convey the texture or quality of the voice.

6. Rate of Speech: Describe how fast or slow the character speaks, using words like "rapid," "slurred," "measured," or "rambling."

7. Mood or Emotion: Indicate the mood or emotion carried by the voice. For example, a "quivering" voice may convey fear or anxiety, while a "warm" voice may express comfort and reassurance.

8. Resonance: Describe the resonance of the voice, such as "echoing," "nasal," "booming," or "tinny."

9. Timbre: Mention the timbre of the voice, using words like "rich," "thin," "clear," or "smoky."

10. Cadence: Highlight the rhythm or cadence of speech with descriptors like "staccato," "lilting," "rhythmic," or "halting."

11. Intonation: Convey the character's intonation by saying their voice is "sarcastic," "apologetic," "confident," or "questioning."

12. Vocal Characteristics: If applicable, mention unique vocal characteristics, like a "lisp," "stutter," "drawl," or "accented 'r'."

Ilia fucking Malinin’s world record breaking free skate

Oh my God every bit of this is wild

-when he does the first big jump the announcers start screaming. I don't understand enough of what I'm looking at to get what about this is breaking records but the announcers screaming was a pretty big clue

-He's dancing to music from Succession????? I don't recognize all of it but some of it is definitely the theme from Succession. At one point the audience claps along to the music. And I'm not sure if it's out of support for the skater or because they like the song 🤣

-when he finishes he just lays down on the ice incredible

THAT'S MY BOY!!! I SKATE AT HIS RINK!!!

  • That first big jump is a Quadruple Axel. It's 4.5 rotations in the air (you take off forwards rather than backwards, which is the extra half rotation). Nobody else in the world can do this jump it's so hard. He is the first and only person to ever land it cleanly, much less consistently. He had to land it cleanly here to have any hope of winning the World Champion title.
  • Yes, he's skating to music from Succession! The audience is clapping in support because he was doing so well (also because it was hosted in Montreal and the audience was very supportive of all the skaters that evening).
  • He lays down on the ice because he just broke multiple world records. He landed all 6 types of quadruple jumps cleanly, which no one has ever done at all (again, because he's the only one that can do the quad Axel), much less in a single program like this. This was an insane feat of athletic ability! If you go watch the other guys who competed against him, Yuma Kagiyama was in second place by 20 fucking points, and Yuma skated with no falls. This is Micheal Phelps / Katie Ledecky levels of smashing the competition (sorry the only other sport I know is swimming).

Some other notes for everyone:

  • Ilia listed that first jump as a Triple Axel on the sheet you give to the judges, meaning that he wasn't committed to doing the Quad Axel. (Technically you're not committed to anything on the sheet but it's generally your "plan" for the program.) He also doesn't do a quad axel in the 6-minute warmup beforehand when he does go and do it in the program, so it was a complete toss-up as to whether he was going to go for it. It's incredible that he manages to land the jump so perfectly without warming it up first!
  • He was 3rd coming into this skate from the previous short program. (All skating competitions require you to skate 2 different programs, 1 short and 1 long.) In order to win the title, he was going to have to skate without any falls, especially because his one strong point is his jumps and other skaters are stronger in other areas. There are many, many skaters who fall on their quad jumps, even when they're just doing one. It is so fucking hard to do even one of the 6 types of quad jumps. And he just does all 6! In one program! Insanity!
  • He did a 4 Lutz - 3 Flip at the halfway point of his program. Almost no one puts a Flip on the end of their combos, it'll usually be a Salchow instead because it's much easier. The only other skater I can think of to put a Flip on the end of a combo is Shoma Uno (who was also at these championships but didn't have a good skate).
  • His last jumping pass was a combo that was supposed to be a 3 Lutz - 2 Axel. He decided, in the moment, to change the 2 Axel to a 3 Axel. Nobody else has ever attempted this, much less succeeded. It is orders of magnitude more difficult to do another rotation to the second jump in a combo, at the very end of a 4.5 minute sprint no less.

In short, this kid is wild, had the performance of a lifetime, and I had the blessed opportunity to witness it.

Doh! You're right, I miscounted and thought he had the quad flip in there. Damn commentators saying "six quads" multiple times and me just thinking we got the whole set while forgetting about that second 4 Lutz. Forgetting the second 4 Lutz. Jesus.

But yeah, the combos were 4Lutz - 3Flip, 4Toe - 3Toe, and 3Lutz - 3Axel.

Also forgot to mention that he fucking backloaded his program by putting all the combos in the second half. You get more points but it's also riskier because if you mess up on the first jump and miss the second, you can't make it up later (because you've run out of jump slots at that point). I think 4Lutz - 3Flip is the hardest 2-jump combo anyone has ever tried at this point (not sure about 3-jump combos), although there are videos of Ilia doing quad-quad combos, just not in competition yet.

JFC the kid is insane.

Any thoughts on the recent passing of Akira Toriyama?

While I didn't watch all that much DBZ growing up, I absolutely did play a ton of the PS2 era video games (including all three Budokais and Tenkaichi 2). As an adult, I've enjoyed playing FighterZ and watching the last two movies (Broly, Super Hero) in theaters. All that said, the man left behind an impressive legacy and will be missed by a great many number of people.

As we say in Arabic, "inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un."

How do you think Sarella Sand/Alleras would have fared at the Archery contest during the Hand’s Tourney in AGOT?

Sarella/Alleras would probably have acquitted themselves well but they ain't no match for the likes of Anguy, Balon Swann, and Jalabhar Xho.

This feels like an obvious question but I haven’t really seen it asked/answered: what is your interpretation of Joffrey pointing at Tyrion while choking to death during the Purple Wedding? Was it Joff straightforwardly implicating his uncle? Or something else in your view?

I am of two minds on this.

  1. Joffrey was pointing at Tyrion as an accusation because who else would want him dead and had the brains to pull it off?
  2. By that very same token, Joffrey might have been pointing to Tyrion as a form of supplication. "YOU are the smartest person here. YOU do something to save me." (I once read somewhere that the bystander effect is much less likely to happen if you call upon a specific person in a crowd to help you as opposed to making a general cry for help.)

That said, there's no way to be sure short of a Joffrey POV and I doubt anyone would want to read about a 13yo choking to death as seen through said 13yo's eyes. (Cersei would have made for an interesting choice (if only because it would parallel Catelyn) but I'm not sure such a one-off works as well as it does with Melisandre in ADWD and does not with Arys Oakheart in AFFC.)
