did anyone else get a weird thrill as a kid from correctly imitating Normal Kid Things

like I would drink a Coca Cola (hating every sensory moment) and feel excited about participating in a Normal activity. I listened to 20 second samples of Avril Lavigne songs at Barnes and Noble and think, “oh yes, this is what normal American children do, look at me, I’m doing it too”

8 year old me: [eats a slice of pizza]

8 year old me: “Wow. I’m doing it. I’m really doing it. I bet I seem just like a Normal Kid. I bet this looks natural, like I do it every day without even thinking about it. If those people see me eating this pizza they will think, ‘Wow, what a regular child! Just like the ones on TV!’”

Frankly I still do this, to some extent--back in 2019 I went out with a friend after work and sat there like “Wow, I am in a city, drinking wine at a bistro with a friend from work, having an engaging conversation about our dating lives. This is what Normal Adults do. Look at me, a Normal Adult! Like from TV!”

The library was destroyed over 1000’s of years ago. The library consisted of thousands of scrolls and books about mathematics, engineering, physiology, geography, blueprints, medicine, plays, & important scriptures. Thinkers from all over the Mediterranean used to come to Alexandria to study.Most of the major work of civilization up until that point was lost. If the library still survived till this day, society may have been more advanced and we would sure know more about the ancient world.

college is catered towards the able bodied and able minded. school applauds people who can stay up all night, skip meals, and work endlessly. that kind of extreme contribution is expected. why are disabled people being squeezed out of academic institutions? why should I feel inferior because of some arbitrary and ridiculous standard?

Read the book Academic Ableism on this subject. It’s an excellent read and I genuinely think about it all the time still even though I read it a couple years ago.

It’s amazing how many ADHD people I know whose friends and family are just like “It’s like they have no clue that this Big Bad Consequence will happen if they don’t do this thing! I keep trying to tell them but it never sinks in!” and when I talk to the person themselves they’re like, “I can’t do the thing they want me to do, so here are my plans for surviving the Big Bad Consequence.”

I think that a lot of us with ADHD have so much experience failing “simple” tasks that we just get numb to it. Failure is so normal it’s practically inevitable. Success doesn’t feel possible, so why worry about that chance we’re “throwing away” if it was never going to work for us anyway?

(And of course our senses of what’s acceptable, of what we should demand for ourselves, have often been ground into absolute dust. Of course I’m going to fail the test/flunk out of school/lose my job/get evicted; of course I should meekly accept this as my lot in life and not ask for any help in “cleaning up my own mess.” We’re almost never taught to question authority and demand better treatment that understands our disabilities.)

Non-ADHD people tend not to get: A lot of the time it’s not our understanding of cause and effect that’s totally broken. It’s our sense that we are competent people capable of shaping better lives for ourselves, and that we deserve support and understanding.
