Blog is clean of last night’s bullcrap. Anon is still off and will be for the foreseeable future. I’m still doubting I have any worth or use but the blog at least will remain and I will try to answer questions should anyone have any and I guess post quotes from readings. Idk. As said, feeling pretty useless and like the one anon was right so.

Why is Járnviðr known as the Iron Wood? What is the significance of iron in the name?

Járn is a neuter noun that is Old Norse for iron. Viðr is a masculine noun that refers to wood, tree, or forest. So Járnviðr literally translates to Ironwood, Irontree, or Ironforest but Ironwood is the most popular gloss as viðr is usually translated as meaning wood rather than the other two possible meanings.

The significance of Iron in the name is honestly a case of “no one really knows”. There’s theories, sure, but few have any real evidence to back them up. Typical theories are the forest is a fantastical place with leaves or wood made out of iron (Cleasby-Vigfusson.) Another theory translates járn as “dark” and sees it as merely a deep and dense forest.  One theory put forth by Leif Einarsson, in my opinion, actually has some legs to stand upon based on the evidence provided.

Einarsson’s argument consists of tracing and comparing Járnviðr to a number of non-mythical toponyms (place names). In doing so, he illustates that there are a number of nonmythical equivalents to Járnviðr such as the significantly eastern forests of Jarnwith and Isarnho. (Significant as Járnviðr lies to the east in old norse cosmology.) Both can be traced to real world forested areas and have etymological roots that mean iron wood/forest. He also traces a number of other examples where this etymology can be found but I won’t recount his entire argument here for the sake of brevity. After recounting all these examples of Ironwood toponyms, Einarsson explains that many if not all were either historically places of bog iron production or located next to civilizations in such a way as to suggest they had resource potential like this. Thus the iron in their names, and also potentially then in the mythic toponym of Járnviðr, is linked to the presence of bog iron within the forest depths.

Unfortunately, whether this means Járnviðr is actually named thusly is hard to say but it’s a compelling argument based off of so many real-word equivalent names found throughout Germanic-speaking countries. Of course, it being compelling is one reason it’s worth really examining so that one doesn’t just assume it as fact, but his evidence and thinking seems sound.

Although, to the best of my knowledge, owls are not associated with any Norse gods in the myth, in your experience, have you discovered any connection between owls and gods, wights, or other beings?

Avatar

So I used to have a page of notes on owls that I have no idea where it went... On this page of notes I distinctly remember ties to Skadi and it wasn’t just owls living in the mountains there was more to it than that. I will continue to look through what I have but I remember the scraps of information I found on owls were by chance looking at something totally different. So it may be a while before I find the info again but in the meantime,Skadi was the major connection I recall. Jennebert in one paper iirc correctly mentions eagle owls buried in a falconer’s grave which may also suggest a connection to Ullr via hunting.

Sorry it’s not much at the moment. I’m honestly frustrated because I have a more useful answer somewhere but I can’t find it for you at this time.

(alfar Anon) thank you for rebloging your old post, it was exactly what kind of information I was looking for! I'm a baby heathen starting to work with Freyr, and he wants me to research them. I'm on mobile so search was hard... but your posts really are huge help! English isn't my first language, so a lot of academic texts are difficult, but the way you write always makes sense, thank you so much!

I’m glad to hear it was helpful! Especially since that’s a large reason why I make these sorts of posts - I want to make things accessible to people.

Best of luck to you with your path with Freyr - and the alfar if you wind up working with them too! And ofc, eel free to ask me for more info should you need it!

The Álfar

The Álfar (elves) are perhaps some of the most elusive and contradictory figures in the eddas. They’re rarely mentioned on their own and the one time an alfa is the lead of a tale in Norse lore, he in many ways far more resembles a dwarf in ability and function. In addition, things become even more difficult as the depictions and associations of the alfar change drastically after Christianization. They go from demigod-like beings to being invisible pests and menaces in some tales and essentially land spirits in others. It is for this reason I think it’s worth noting Gunnell’s statement that one should be “highly wary of ever referring to the earlier manifestation of alfar as ‘elves’ unless we use the term in the Tolkien sense of the word.” For that reason I’m choosing to focus more on the functions scholars have discerned they played in pre-Christian Scandinavian religions rather than those of the “folklore elves”.

Hi! Is there any info you can share about the elves, and Alfheim too? Is it really that hard to find anything on them or I just have bad research skills? Thank you either way, your every post is so informative, and easy to understand!

There’s very little afaik on Alfheim. I will go poking about it later tonight to see if I can find anything more but in the meantime, here’s a post I wrote on the alfar a ways back right here. It also contains a bit of information on the historical Alfheim region.

Elves are tricky to read upon due to the fact that the views surrounding the alfar changed wildly over time. They went from almost demigod-like beings to land spirits to mischievous pests or even menaces. So you’re going to find wildly conflicting information on them depending on what time period the paper in question examines. My post I linked to focuses on the alfar as beings who received cultic worship aka the beings the influenced Tolkien elves, not the more folkloric pests they became.

I would like to read about bears in Norse mythology if you're still up for writing about them :)

I am. I have the write up like half completed form way back when I started it. I'll see about poking at it in a bit. Just started writing jotun prayers. But I'll get to the bears next week if not today.

I shouldn’t HAVE to say this, but in light of recent events, this is something I’d really like to be crystal fucking clear on:

if you sympathize with, or are a member of the alt-right and other white supremacist groups, or hell if you’re even one of those types that think these ideologies are worth “debating”

fucking LEAVE. You are not welcome here and you never will be.
