My partner often tells me to stop making faces in public that are going to get him punched. Pretty sure that's what Perry is thinking about Della's face in this moment. Only for him it'd be worse because the person she's making the face at is Lt. Andy Anderson.
Perry's concern and love for Junior in this moment destroys me. This movie is not great, the premise is all around messy, but the scene of Perry searching for the missing Paul Jr. and then finding him in his wrecked car and watching over him in the hospital almost makes up for it.
It's always interesting to watch the episodes with Bill Williams as a guest star, especially when he's not a good guy. He always plays a character who is, at best, a surly guy, but in this case he's straight-up the villain (it's a 60-year-old show, don't @ me about spoilers). I also always wonder what it must have been like to have him on the set for the week as a colleague rather than just as Barbara Hale's husband.
I love when Della gets to go toe-to-toe with Burger. Why should Perry have all the fun?
Girl are you the Hays Code the way you consider media irredeemable if it depicts anything that strays away from the norm you're comfortable with or depicts anything morally questionable without definitively condemning it and anyone associated with it, therefore creating worse stories and content and making it difficult for people to engage with complicated issues from a nuanced and controlled perspective?
ok what’s your florence + the machine song. mine is rabbit heart (raise it up)<3
The selection screens on these DVDs are incredible. I mean, whatever graphic designer got to create these was just living the dream.
who would have guessed that green would be his color?
Hamilton!
OK, I get that there are a lot of these discs (72!) they have to come up with covers for but you're telling me that in in 200+ episodes they couldn't get a more flattering screenshot than this? As someone with literally thousands of these screenshots on my desktop at this point (no, I will not be taking comments), I call bullshit.
love a subtle pinstripe
these re-colorings really make Raymond Burr's blue eyes pop and I'm here for it
pretty sure I've included that screenshot of Hamilton in my own roundup of that smooth-brained boi
I have definitely included that shot of Hamilton in my round-up of him.
I desperately want to ruffle that hair.
So baby in S1! And Tragg for the background image!
such. a. baby.
Is it slightly jarring to jump from S1 to S7? Yes. Do I really care that much? No.
There's a reason Perry furrows his brow in nearly every one of my fics and this shot explains why.
He's just so yummy in purple.
I love that Perry and Paul have the same expression here.
You can make that face all you want, Perry, Della's not having any of your shit.
Fellas, this isn't the most flattering look for either of you.
Shoutout to @theperrylleluniverse for the heads up that the subtitles screens on the DVDs have even better graphics! I love the idea of Della and Burger arguing for the fun of it.
These teal ones, I don't know, man. This is just a bit extreme.
Back to baby Raymond Burr! And holding the copy of the book, I love it!
Ooof, that teal again.
make the background match the tie
What did they do to William Hopper's hair here? At least Barbara Hale looks incredible, I love her collar+broach situation.
Why on earth did they use a screencap of when Burr's shoulder was injured and bandaged under his freaking shirt? It was a bad look on screen and it's a bad look here. Geeze, Louise, people.
The Case of the Dueling Smirks
Another Perry Mason series: signs from episodes without context.
This one is a little hard to read because it was in the distant background but it's a classic "It's been X many days without an accident sign" only the type of accident is "lost time."
Bars have their own time. It's known fact.
Ah, the 60s. When it was perfectly normal to leave a note pinned to your door telling people you weren't home but go ahead and go in, you'll be right back.
This episode was so bonkers and I loved it.
I have many questions about where Perry gets his props for court
It's never explained what's in this kit or what makes it gracious and inquiring minds need to know!
I love the lettering on this one
This episode had so many good signs. Who needs IKEA?
I guess it makes sense that an episode about an artist/cartoonist would have great signs.
My new favorite.
I appreciate signing your sign.
These couldn't scream 1962 louder if they tried.
Only 1962 would make a summer camp look like a foundation.
The best part of this one is how it's blocking the "Do Not Obstruct" signage.
I can speak from experience: this signage hasn't really changed since 1961.
S6 is the season of neon and I'm here for it.
The flourish on those Rs gives me life.
this one is for @epersonae
Not technically a sign but still hilarious.
This looks like it belongs at a ren faire or something.
It's the drop shadow that really makes it. And the background of the chainlink fence.
These gave off very House at Pooh Corner vibes.
The prop department really loved this shape for signs.
And if you'll buy this, they'll throw the Golden Gate in free!
I love when there are 3+ fonts on a single sign post.
like shooting fish in a barrel
If you need Randolph James, go climb a tree.
I have a new favorite.
I have to admit, this is pretty clever marketing. "another" certainly hooks me.
Flagstaff, I'd like a word with your graphic designer.
Mid-century dentistry. No thanks.
Campaign headquarters, but make it mid-century.
signs all the way down
"for the people"
That's...not actually that great of a record.
look at those Ms!
...why the fish?
adding this one mostly because they kept pronouncing it "am-pie-theater" and it took me until seeing the sign to understand what they were even saying
this font feels right for a novelty company
I wish they hadn't just done a quick walk-by of this office sign because it's amazing.
I just...the kerning on this one. And why are those horizontal break lines so off center on "College of Law"?
I think I'd keep driving until I saw the next "Vacancy" sign.
I would hope you wouldn't be allowed to hunt or fish for a human being
There is...so much going on with the fonts on this sign. But I will forever love phone numbers being listed by exchange name.
even with context, this one doesn't make a whole of sense
That R is so stylized, it may as well be the Disney D
yummy
I see what you did there, CBS.
That's a porn star name if I ever heard one.
...is that supposed to be a wildcat?
sounds legit
Paul Drake has some kind of handwriting
questionable use of quotation marks, Modesto
I just...the spacing.
"pop" art
what is going on with that E in importance?!
the motel signs might be my favorites
there's too much to choose just one thing
the movies have had fewer signs in them in general but tonight we got Spicy Bits magazine 2.0, baby! This one is just for @epersonae
technically, it's a magazine, but it's still amazing
living in a city with a neighborhood called Fishtown, can confirm this sign would fit right in
who names these places?
misdemeanor, schmisdemeanor
I love that L
Cream-Deb Beauty Aid
the stuff of nightmares
perfect drop shadows are perfect
this one is actually pretty timeless
I love everything about "Lucky Sterling" there. The style on the capital letters, the flowing script, the amazing tails on the y and the g
which is better, the drop shadows or the quatrefoil accents?
so many choices were made on this one
those letters are aggressively 3-D
it kind of blows my mind that there were still women-only boarding houses into the 1960s
well, if you insist
NOW!
props to the prop department on this one, they sure made it look weathered
party in the HOLIDAY ROOM
it's the illustrations along the side that do it for me
Again, six different fonts on one sign. Plus a palm tree. And don't get me started on that ripple on "Palm View".
one episode, so many good signs
it's the hyphen that does it for me
those drop shadows tho
even the buses were pretty in 1962
this one was the opening shot, really hits you in the face
as a government employee, can confirm that we really do name things like this
I love redundant signs
this one was so long, it required learning to gif to share it
Why so many serifs? Why?
I'd like to introduce this designer to lowercase letters.
Someone hand-painted those letters to look like logs and I can't even.
5 fonts, 4 lines, 3 stylings, too much going on to count, really.
marble all the way down
the line down the middle of the letters; everything about the star! how could you not want to be managed by these people?
bonus: classic car behind the sign
that ampersand is incredible
I have a lot of opinions on Perry's time on the bench but I am glad that at least the movies finally gave us one scene of him in robes.
mash girlies (gender-neutral) have the most middle-aged interests of all time. like it’s not just mash. “oh here’s my favorite amc period drama and my favorite dad rock musician and my favorite terry pratchett novel” you are a middle school art teacher ten years away from retirement. you guys post like you’ve got a baked ziti in the oven. and then we're all like 23.
I feel personally attacked by this post.
King of cool, Paul Drake, Jr. He's so ridiculous but I love him so much.
They were all so good at phone acting but I just really, really love Barbara Hale's.
No one looks as cool driving a convertible as Paul Drake, especially when he's talking on his 1960s car phone!
I'm gonna link to the animations in case y'all either don't remember or have never heard of some of these.
A quick note: these were made in the 2000s. Comedy is subjective, there's some strong examples of dark and/or "lolz teh random" humor in these. Maybe some cultural blindness, too. That said, enjoy a time capsule of stuff made before/during the birth of Youtube, now hosted on Youtube.
this is George Washington erasure
he'll save children but not the British children
