The Fandom by Anna Day is the story of Violet, her best friends Alice and Katie and her little brother Nate. Violet, like many other teenagers is obsessed with the dystopian YA novel the Gallows Dance and when Comic Con comes to London Violet and co attend in cosplay to meet the stars of the recently released movie based on the book. However things take a crazy turn when Violet, Alice, Katie and Nate somehow end up in the world of Gallows Dance. To make matters worse their arrival ends up causing the death of the book’s heroine, Rose and to make things right and to ensure that they return to their world Violet must take Rose’s place in the story. Violet thinks that this will be easy, she knows the story by heart but she isn’t Rose and things soon spiral into chaos causing Violet to rethink her entire world view and who she wants to be.
This was a really fun and exciting book filled with references to fandom and fandom culture, especially from a young female pov. Anna Day beautifully captures and portrays what it is to be a fan and the passion that comes with it. I also really enjoyed Violet and her growth in this story, how she grows not only as a young woman but also as a fan. Violet begins to see flaws in her favourite characters and the world that she loves and it changes her perspectives on this fictional world that she loves and not in a negative way. She questions and is critical and she comes out as a stronger person and a wiser fan who sees and acknowledges the flaws in her favourite book but still loves and appreciates it and sees no shame in continuing to love it.
