“We tell no one about this, deal?”
“Deal. Hey, Maya? Uh… what’s that on your hand?”
Maya raised her eyebrows at him, but she looked down anyway. And sitting smack dab on her ring finger… Oh, god. Oh, god. “Tell me it’s not…” She turned around, whipping her hair behind her and ran to the table to find a - marriage certificate.
“I thought it was a one-night stand… and now we’re married… Lucas, what do we do?”
Lucas shrugged, looking not nearly as affected as he should have been. “What do you mean ‘what do we do?’ We’re married.”
“It says right here that-”
“That is not what I mean! We can get a divorce, though, right? Or a - what’s it called - an annulment?”
“Well, yeah, I guess - I mean, do you want to?”
“Of course!” Maya put her hands on her hips, eyes widening. “Do you not want to?”
He scratched the back of his head. “Well, I mean… Of course not. No, definitely divorce.”
“I’m gonna go - Remind me to never get drunk, under any circumstances, ever again.” She took off the ring, laid it down on the table with a small clatter, and before Lucas could respond, she was out the door.
He took the ring, held it in his hand and then quietly walked over to his dresser and set it down in the first drawer. He smiled, only slightly. Better save it, he thought. Maybe we’ll actually need it someday.
