Absolutely no disrespect to the main character/leading actor of Squid Game but i just feel there was a lost opportunity to make kang saebyeok the main protagonist. We don't visually see as much of her story/hardship (we hear it from her instead) but her story felt the most compelling. If she was the main character it could have opened up an interesting discussion regarding north korean defectors and the struggles they face in south korea. Jung hoyeon, the actress who plays saebyeok is actually a model and this was her first acting gig but i really loved her in this series 🥲

i see where you're coming from but i feel like a large part of squid game was being able to relate it to the current situation of the world. a majority of the population of south korea (who i'd assume was the main target audience) would be able to relate to an average citizen in a bad situation rather than a north korean defector.

That's a valid point. I suppose Gi Hun's story, while less compelling, can be seen as more "universal" because gambling addiction would be more common than being a North Korean defector. Maybe it's just me but the main character was a terrible father to his kid and terrible son to his mother, even to the last moment of the series. With saebyeok, she's flawed, she steals, she's got trust issues, her hands aren't clean, but the story the writers gave her caused many viewers to so deeply root for her. I still think it would have been possible to have plenty of aspects of realism/relatability with a character like saebyeok though. Ultimately, it's about people in absolutely terrible financial situations with no way out. They'd still have characters like sangwoo and Gi-hun to represent different situations that end in this sad reality, but they'd focus on a more compelling protagonist.

I think it wouldn't matter as much to me if Gi-hun's character just a little less shitty to his kid and mother. Ik they try to redeem him by making him the "nice guy" in the games but his actions in the end really made me not like him.

i can’t even quite articulate what it’s like to be socialized on tumblr from a teenager to adulthood without sounding insane…. it did a lot of damage to me unquestionably but also i genuinely feel like I Am Built Different than my peers who did not have that same experience. actually you know what it’s literally just the blade runner ‘i’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe, moments lost in time like tears in rain’ speech….i am cringe but i am free

It's actually homophobic that jtbc made me sit through all that hetero nonsense and even made Jae eon × nabi canon without a soljiwan kiss 🤬

Seeing people make up excuses for Park Jae eon even after episode 9 is alarming. He's extremely manipulative, possessive, and to a certain extent violent (the way he grabbed Nabi). The bar is in hell for conventionally attractive men. I want better for straight women my god 🥴

Nevertheless (2021) - 1x08 - I guess you think I should apologize for what I did, then. If what you did was just a mistake you need to fix. What? What do you mean? Because if you did that with no meaning, then you’re hurting me.

"how many Sols must there be in the world.. there might be a lot of people crying watching this. as much as there are people happy for liking someone, there are people who feel sorry for liking someone, how painful it must be. i love soljiwan but today i'm thankful for Sol's story" translate

I'm fucking crying right now.

Liking/loving someone like this shouldn't make you feel sorry. But the world we are living in right now is making us feel sorry, painful or even disgusted at our own feelings is just cruel like that.

How I wish we can like/love whoever (in acceptable way) we can.
