"I don't know, Ned! What if this is just a plan to trap me? He's done shit like this before and now with my condition, I don't know if I can take that risk," I sighed, pacing back and forth in my room as I talked to Ned on the phone. "But what if it isn't? And this is Peter actually apologizing. He needs help, our help!" he tried to convince me through the phone.
"Ned, this isn't safe. I can send him a letter back but meeting him? I don't know if that'll be okay," I said, sitting down on my bed. "What if I meet him first? He's never tried to fight me!" Ned suggested.
"Ned, absolutely not! That's too dangerous," I told him and he sighed through the phone. "But, what if you come with me! I'll meet him and you'll hide and listen in. Step in if anything goes wrong," he suggested.
Ned never stopped and I knew he would never give up on trying to get Peter back to who he used to be. He was more hopeful than I ever was.
"Fuck! Alright, alright. Fine but one wrong move and you're getting out of there, okay? You can go ahead and call him and set up a time. I'm free whenever," I told him, rolling eyes and finally giving in.
"Okay, cool! Cool! I'll let you know," he said and hung up, excitedly. I chuckled a bit, shaking my head before sighing.
Ned called me about an hour later to let me know that he planned on meeting Peter tomorrow by Maple Grove Cemetary. It was sooner than I thought but didn't care much to ask Ned to try to meet him at a later date.
That next day, Ned and I met right before going to the cemetary. "What're you planning on talking about?" I asked him. He shrugged, "I don't know. Probably just try to get some answers out of him. See if he's really trying to turn his life around and stuff like that," he said and I nodded.
"I'll hide up in that tree right over there, alright? Just make sure you stay close in case he does anything," I reminded him and he nodded, "Got it."
I climbed up the tall tree, holding my wings close to my body as the branches scratched and rubbed against them. I tried to let the green leaves cover me as best as they could so that Peter wouldn't see me.
I watched as Peter walked up to meet Ned who was standing just a few rows away from the tree. Ned gave him an awkward hug and Peter stiffened but patted him on the back trying to delude the awkwardness.
Ned looked up at the tree I was in looking around trying spot me as he and Peter walked towards me. "What're you looking at?" Peter asked and Ned shook his head, laughing awkwardly, "Nothing, nothing. Just saw a- a. Uh a bird?"
Peter looked at him suspiciously before shrugging, looking down at his feet. "So I heard you wrote Y/N a letter?" Ned said, breaking the silence. I silently groaned. Why would Ned pick that to start the conversation.
"Uh yeah I did. She mention it?" Peter asked, looking up at him. He shook his head, looking down quickly. "No, no. I saw it when I payed her a visit at the compound. It was after what happened between her and Bruce Banner," he said and I silently cursed him out.
"What happened?" Peter asked, confused. Ned's eyes widdened in surprise, instantly realizing he fucked up. "Oh, no-nothing," he said and Peter glared at him. "Ned-"
"Okay, okay. She went back to the compound after the night you pushed her off the fire escape, outside your apartment. An-and well Dr. Banner had told her to stay inside that night and to take a break and he kind of hulked out and they got into a fight," Ned explained.
"What? Is she okay? Did he hurt her?" Peter asked hurriedly, his voice worried. "Well yeah but she's okay. She healed fast and that was like a long time ago. She's fine," he said, trying to calm him down. Peter nodded.
It was silent for a moment until Peter broke the ice. "I've got something to confess, Ned," he said and Ned looked up at him, confused. "Yeah? What is it?" he asked and Peter sighed. "It's been rough these past several months but I've been getting better. I promise. I've been... um clean for two weeks now. I've been doing it for her," Peter said, quietly, as if he was ashamed. What did he mean by clean?
"Clean from what Peter?" Ned asked and Peter sighed. "I've been drinking. A lot," he said and Ned's face softened. "And I'm getting clean for Y/N. I wanna be strong for her," he said and I felt my cheeks heat up. "But Ned you've got to promise something, alright?" he asked and Ned nodded, "Of course, anything."
"Y/N cannot know. I cannot do that to her right now. You know? I mean, after everything that's happened with her, I-. Please?" Peter pleaded, his face tense and scared. Ned was silent, his eyes shooting to where I was hidden up in the tree.
"Pete-" Ned started but Peter shook his head, grabbing his arm. "Just swear, okay?" Peter asked and Ned sighed before nodding. "Okay."
The conversation went on till Peter said that he had to go back to his apartment. They both said their goodbyes before Peter left. I carefully climbed down from the tree before sighing. "I didn't know.." Ned started but I shook my head.
"It's okay. I didn't either," I told him before wrapping my arms around him, hugging him. "He's going to be okay right?" Ned asked and I pulled away before shrugging, "I don't know. He's strong, he just needs help," I said.
We stood for a moment, keeping our thoughts to ourselves but we both knew what the other was thinking. "I think I should go home," Ned said and I nodded. "Yeah, I think I need to go do something."
Ned gave me a confused look, questioning what my plan was. "It's okay. I've got it. You go ahead and go home. I'll call you later," I said before taking off before Ned had the chance to say anything else. I flew towards Peter's apartment, landing on the roof as I watched him go inside.
I sighed before landing down onto the sidewalk, going up to his apartment. I let out a nervous breath before knocking on his door. The door opened revealing Peter in the same clothes as he was wearing just a bit ago.
"Y/N?" he looked at me confused. "Hey, Pete," I said, quietly, looking up at him. "Wh-What're you doing here?" he asked. "You sent me a letter," I said.
"Yeah, I did," Peter said, awkwardly. There was a small moment of awkward silence. I looked up at Peter and he stared right back at me before I crashed into him, hugging him tightly. He stepped a bit, waiting a few seconds before wrapping his arms around me.
He let out a breath of air, resting his head on top of my head, squeezing me tighter as if he didn't want to let go. I breathed him in, he still smelled the same as he did before everything turned to shit.
"I've missed you so much," I whispered, shakily. Peter cleared his throat, letting go of me and stepping back. "Come in?" he suggested, ignoring my comment from before and I just nodded, walking into his apartment as he stepped aside.
"I was just about to go to sleep," Peter said, closing the door behind me. "This early?" I asked. He never liked to go to bed early, always used to stayed up late doing homework or patrolling. "Yeah, um. Long day," he said.
"Oh, well I can just go, let you sleep," I said, turning around to let myself out. Before, I could Peter stopped me, grabbing my arm. "Wait, Y/N. Could you stay, actually? Please?" Peter asked, pleading like he did earlier today to Ned. I stilled for a moment, surprised before responding. "Yeah, of course," I said, nodding.
"Thank you. You can have t-the bed if you'd like. I can sleep on the couch or the uh- floor. Whatever you like," he said and I shook my head. "No, no. It's okay. I'll take the couch, it's your apartment," I said. "But you're the guest. I begged you to stay," he countered and I laughed.
"Peter, why don't we both take the bed. Is that okay with you? It's not like we haven't before," I said and Peter tended up, his eyes widening before nodding. "Y-Yeah, sure," he said, nervously leading me to his room.
"Do you need anything? Water? Change of clothes?" he asked and I shook my head. "I'm okay, thank you though," I said and he nodded before pulling back my sheets, gesturing for me to get under them and lay down. I slid under the soft, familiar sheets before scooting over to make room for Peter on the small bed.
Peter sat down, turning off the light, the room going dark. The only source of light in the room was from the window. He laid on the edge of the bed, careful to not get too close to me. "You know, you can get closer than that, Pete. I'm not a bomb," I laughed and Peter chuckled nervously before moving closer to me.
There was a moment of silent for a while before I lifted my arm, hugging him closer to me. "Is this okay?" I asked and he nodded quickly as he cuddled into me. "Thank you," he whispered and I smiled to myself. "Thank you, Pete."
