Game Center Student Show

@eoy16-blog / eoy16-blog.tumblr.com

Every May, something amazing happens. Games. Game design BFA and MFA students at NYU present their year-long work to the public.
Games on screens, on cards, on paper. In boxes, in rooms, in your head. With hands, with headsets, with friends. Research on games, with games.
This blog is a dedicated curation of the projects at the 2016 Game Center Student Show.

This is the intro level of Cognition! You are a pair of gears sketched out by a scientist who is racking his brain to create a spaceship. One day, the scientist was so frustrated at his set backs that he accidentally spilled chemicals and that gave the gears life! So now you must traverse the mess that the scientist  created to power up parts of the space ship and eventually help the scientist finish up the project!  The game is designed to be played on the iPad and uses single-tap movement. As you tap, whichever gear that was rotating will stop and the other gear will start to rotate around the stationary gear. In this way, you can create an interesting movement pattern and traverse the level.

We are currently designing new and interesting levels that will make use of this movement method.

Showing Cognition at the NYU GameCenter Open Playtest session Friday afternoon at GDC!

A number of wonderful people approached the booth and give all the projects set up a whirl. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, but there were valid pieces of criticism about level design and visual feedback that we will take to heart and continue to tweak to provide the best experience possible.

We will be showcasing the final product at @eoy16, the End of the Year Student Showcase, in mid-May. We will be releasing shortly afterwards so please stop by and check out our completed piece before it’s formally on the App store!

One of the highlights for GDC2016 was getting to show our game to TouchArcade which is an amazing site that has reviews and news about mobile games. We signed up for an interview session and proceeded to meet them and play and talk about our game, Cognition. We are extremely excited about their responses. You can read about what they like about our game in this link!

Stage Fright

Stage Fright is MFA candidates Brian Kang’s and Maurício Juliano’s single player rhythm/horror game which explores musical performance anxiety. You play as an inexperienced pianist as they struggle to deal with their own insecurities, which manifest themselves as nightmares from the past.

Consume Me - Jenny Jiao Hsia

One of Consume Me’s vignettes - constructing a meal. Game design BFA Jenny Jiao Hsia’s iterated from literally balancing pieces of food to organizing meals just-so on the plate as seen above. Keeping the food’s calorie count in mind is the goal. The precarious balance in this vignette feeds into other scenes - from assessing the gut to weighing the body.
