Country music before 9/11 was a mix of Honky Tonk, Outlaw Country, Folklore and funny songs (see Cow Patty).
I find it so funny folks are getting angry with Beyonce's take on Jolene because instead of begging the other woman to leave her man alone she threatens to kick her ass. They're screaming how that not "real" country.
These ass hats have obviously never listened to a Loretta Lynn song. Many of her songs were about beating back women who were trying to steal her husband. Hell, she had a song called, Fist City, named an album after it. The entire song is her threatening to beat the shit out of a woman who was going around town bragging about how she was going to steal Loretta's husband. Based on a true story by the way. It was known that "sweet" little Loretta had no problem throwing hands with any woman who tried to mess around with her husband.
Let's talk about Loretta for a moment. The next time some idiot tells you folks like Beyonce are trying to make Country music woke, tell them to educate themselves on Loretta's song collection.
She wrote and sang about using the pill in the 70's. She had 4 kids almost back to back and her song made it clear she was done. Hell there's a line in the song, "The brooding house is closed". Radio stations refused at first to play it. She threatened to quit the Grand Ole Opera when they tried to stop her from singing it on stage. She won, and got to sing it on National TV.
BTW Loretta Lynn holds the record for the most banned country music songs. It's either 15 or 17 of her songs have been banned from radio play. If she had started her career today, the 9/11 county music fans would be screaming she was woke and not real country music.
These idiot gate keepers have no idea the history of Country music.
BTW check out Chapel Hart if you're looking for a group that embodies the feel of per 9/11 country music.
