The postcard is a rework of an older pieces that I've seen passed around a lot lately. It appeared in the NYT article on fandom and shipping a few years back.
I wanted to take another pass and see how my skills have changed. All in all, I'm pretty happy about it.

It's been a bit since I've last posted. I'm currently recovering from surgery and the cats have been taking good care of me... So has my wife and my roommate.
I've been really out of commission, so I haven't been able to finish some big woodworking projects or do much art. It's really frustrating. I'm not used to being sedentary. But if I don't rest, I won't heal. So I wait.
I'm excited to get better and get back to it. Excited to create.

I said goodbye to my best friend yesterday.
She gave me unconditional, whole hearted love, and I'll miss her more than I have words to say.
I love you, Bailey. Thank you, friend.

Kindness and love are all we have.
I remember the day I drove out to Prineville, Oregon and got Bailey. They said they had an orange female kitten and I have a very deep and specific love for orange cats. So I jumped in the car and headed there. 20 year old me. Just driving.
Half way there, they called me and told me the orange kitten was a boy. I was living at home and my folks wouldn't let me get a boy cat. Instead of turning back, I kept going. Figured I'd see who else was at this rural humane society.
When I got there, it was right before closing. There was a wire pin filled with blankets and toys and more importantly a pile of sleeping kittens. One cat was on their back, passed out, wet food smothered all over their face, other smaller kittens were draped over them, sleeping.
I just remember smiling and asking if that kitten on the bottom was a girl. The messy one. They said yes and asked if I wanted to hold her.
I cleaned the wet food off her face and she settled into my arms. They told me she was found alone at the edge of a field near a local farm. That her name was Piglet. She seemed to like me.
The choice was easy, this little trash king was coming home with me. I drove home with her tucked into my hoodie. She slept the whole drive. 3 hours.
It was a silly start to a beautiful friendship. Bailey was a constant companion... A rude and goofy pal. Even as a kitten her personality was huge.
Towards the end she kept her pain to herself. We had no idea how bad she had gotten until there was nothing left we could do but say goodbye.
I'm really going to miss her.

I’m really grateful for this fandom. The people I’ve met and the way we’ve all explored facets of Kara and Lena’s connection has been really healing.
There is so much potential there... and I love that we refuse to squander it.

I wrapped up a month of sketching with Eleanor... and I’m glad I did. She’s such an amazing character and I love her presence and strength.
It’s been really great to do a deep dive into how I want to present and represent these characters. I love the shape of her and I’m so glad this is where I landed.

The smartest thing I did when planning this month was anchoring it with all my main characters. It gave me a lot time to think about what I wanted to do with them, how I wanted to costume them, what I wanted their spaces to look like.

Getting back to drawing Fen feels like coming home in a way. I love them so much. This story means so much to me on so many levels. Sometimes I just get quiet and think about how much has changed since I first got the idea for The Widow and The Wolf... how different I am. How much I’ve grown.
The characters have grown along with me... which is lovely and fascinating.
This is a snippet from my Sketchtober filled with TWTW 2 prep. Please enjoy Fen in their many forms... as well as their cabin.
I am def trying to batch relevant pieces together. Jeez, I’m so glad I did all the work to plan out this October project on a calendar and did all the research before the month started.
These characters are more new additions... Because I love torturing myself and I adore ensemble casts.
It’s been really beneficial to get locations relevant to characters pinned down. I feel like I’m not as worried about what will end up in the background. And I get to design spaces, which is a lot of fun.
