A Lesson in Following Through

Alright, everyone likes to do something new, but there are certain rules to writing. And you can ignore these rules all you want but then you run the high risk of getting called out on for bad writing. Which I’m going to have to do here. These rules exist for a reason. 

If you put a gun on a wall, it needs to be shot at some point.

If you have a character getting shot as a cliffhanger to an episode, then the next episode needs to engage and explain what happened, not gloss over it.

If one character gives another character a secret letter, that letter needs to come back into play, whether the written words are revealed or not.

If your own characters reference a relationship over and over again, that relationship needs to be addressed fairly and accurately.

If a character makes a decision, that decision needs to be acted upon.

If one character beats another half to death, that beating needs to be addressed and dealt with. 

If you address a character as a child over and over again you can’t suddenly ignore that and make them an adult.

If you decide to write a baby into the show, that baby has to serve the plot and do more than just essentially get her own mother killed

If a character gets shot in the chest by another character than that’s needs to be addressed in a realistic and believable manner.

If you state in your show what it’s like to be shot by a gun, then you follow through on your own set of rules if any other shootings happen in the show.

If you say a character needs romantic entanglement to be fulfilled, you need to have romantic entanglement for that character or address why it isn’t happening.

If a character is chained to the bottom of a well, don’t let him be pulled up by a rope.

If two characters end up in the middle of an explosion, they have to have injuries and repercussions.

If you explicitly state themes in your own writing, stick to these themes.

I was always going to go on hiatus no matter what happened in Season 4 but now I think I will have less reason to stick around. I’m not deleting but my blog will be on semi-hiatus as I will not have too much time to post and there is a big time difference. I will still check Tumblr daily and be reading fics on all those long plane flights and bus rides. I’m not sure what I will do when I come home at the end of April.

the most fun I’ve had since january 1st 2017 

I know we’re all mad and dissapointed (I am too) but I can’t help but feel sad. This show was performed beautifully; the amazing cast, the incredible camerawork, the clever dialogues… It was unique and so different from other tv shows. It had all the elements to be truly groundbreaking and make history, but it just fell flat and took the worst turn possible.

mmm. does david play any part in this or did we move on from him? mary dated him before she dated john, which is…..odd to me

On John’s blog, his first entry after Reichenbach is in April, 10 months later, where he makes it sound like he’s going to try to move on. Mary is making comments, but they don’t sound especially familiar/intimate just yet, so they probably started seeing each other around this time.

Sherlock returns about 6-7 months later in November, and Mary and John get married another ~6 months later in the spring. So John any marry are together for about one year by the time of the wedding in TSoT.

When Sherlock is interrogating David, David claims he and Mary was “ages ago” (x), which I feel has to mean Mary stopped seeing David at least a year before John. Sherlock mentions Mary and David saw each other for 2 years. So at the shortest timeline possible, Mary was in a relationship with David from 4 years before the wedding, to 2 years before the wedding.

If Mary is supposed to be ~2 months into pregnancy at the wedding to even be showing signs, that means roughly 6-7ish months of preggers married life after the wedding. By the events of s4 ““Rosie”“ seems to be roughly 6 months old, which means about one year has passed since TSoT, so Mary and David’s relationship is now 3-5 years ago from the time of T6T.

The AGRA events are all narrated as happening “six years ago” in T6T, which means at a minimum timeline, Rosamund “Just Wanted a Bit of Peace” Mary Morstan supposedly felt safe enough to settle down (and in the country whose government apparently wanted her dead!) in one spot and enter a long-term relationship with someone only one year after escaping highest-level betrayal and a close shave with what was supposedly intended to be her death, or at least capture and torture?? That’s suspicious af lol

Oh my god, I forgot we hadn’t seen the well yet.

What fresh hell is this

The last two comments from @yorkiepug and @likes-timelords had me searching for a fic where Sherlock has to find John who has fallen into a well. I found it. It’s Resistivity and Relative Charge by liriodendron. It’s got one of the relatively few nice guy versions of Victor Trevor that I’ve read. Part 3 of the Conductivity series. Here’s a snippet of the fic from the scene from the well -

He calls to his friend again, this time hearing a weak response, coming unmistakably from his target. When he reaches it, he finds that it is the remains of an old, crumbling well. And at the bottom of it is John. Curled on his side on the floor of it, slightly bloodied and blinking at the sudden assault of light from Sherlock’s torch, but very definitely alive.

Relief suffuses his mind, making him hyperventilate, John is alive, the world still turns, the universe is operating once again under acceptable parameters, Sherlock will not have to choose between existing forever in a state of utter wrongness or not existing at all, it’s too much, he can’t understand or process the feelings that are trying to crop up, put them away for now, too much still to do, look at them later or maybe not at all…

“John! How did you get down there? Are you hurt?”

John squints up at him. “Sherlock, is that you?” he croaks. “Thank God, I thought I was imagining it. How on earth did you find me?”

“Are. You. Hurt?” Sherlock demands.

“I fell on my back, reinjured it a bit. It’s not serious but I can’t climb back up.”

Sherlock can see the inner surface of the well is uneven, with plenty of protruding rocks that would allow a fit man to scale it easily. He could climb down simply enough, but could he get John back up it?

“Wait one moment,” he calls down, and goes to remove John’s bag from the back of the horse, who is waiting patiently nearby. He rummages inside, grateful the thought of bringing a rope had occurred to him, even if he’d been thinking about cliffs rather than wells at the time. He ties one end of the rope tightly to a boulder, and loops the other end around himself, running it through the handles of the doctor’s bag as well so as to strap it to his back.
