Translation plagiarism

So, we seem to have run into a bit of trouble lately…regarding translation theft & denial of any such action when confronted about it. After much hesitation, we’ve decided to make this issue public in hopes of raising awareness.

It seems that the now-deactivated blog @geekyobsession (geekyobsession.com) has plagiarised nearly every Diabolik Lovers translation they’ve posted there. Two translators have been working on the series at Geeky - one of whom seems to be completely honest with her scripts, while the other does not.

We’ve messaged this potentially dishonest translator several times, whose excuses could easily be truthful, but due to lack of evidence from her end and several contradictory claims we’ve found of hers in the past, we have reason to believe otherwise.

Here is our proof that translations been stolen, including the timestamps.

She first claimed to have translated HDB herself, as evidenced here:

And even made these claims on her Patreon as well.

Then she explained that someone she knew had been sending her scripts, which she would subsequently edit and upload to her site.

Later, she said that this friend went back and retroactively changed all of her translations to stolen ones. Yes, this is entirely possible, but we found it very unlikely. As of yet, she has failed to give us sufficient proof to support her claim, and has instead chosen to defend the person who supposedly wronged her even though screenshots of her wordpress history logs showing edits by a third party would probably be sufficient.

To make matters worse, we found evidence that Diabolik Lovers MORE,BLOOD, Hoshizora no Comic Garden, and Kamigami no Asobi scripts have been stolen as well. Plus Vampire Knight information from a Gamefaqs guide.

We’ve compiled a detailed list, pm us if you’d like to see and compare.

We will tag the other translators as well:

She has also taken from @sakamakihouse and himeutsugi, which can only be found via the Wayback Machine - but we have included links to their cached work in the list linked above.

She has privated her wordpress blog, her blogspot blog, and removed her tumblr account. While that may make it seem like the problem is over, she has not addressed any of this publically. Without any of this coming out, if she ever makes a new blog or something of the sort, the stealing could very well happen again. We also felt a moral obligation to alert those that we knew were stolen from.

Hello, this is Kairi.

This is not how I wanted to come back to this blog and update it, but as you can see above, this is quite important.  Even more so because unfortunately, our team became victims of this mess.

Recently we were alerted through @otogetranslations’s post and reddit that the “translator” Karen from the blog Geeky Obsession had been plagiarizing translations from various otome games and projects, including ours.  She had taken our team’s Passion Pink translations and used it as her own.  Theresa was able to confirm that her translation in our Dropbox folders had been stolen.  Additionally, upon further research of Geeky Obsession’s cache, we found that she had been using the initial translations of our team and not what we had edited and completed (seen below).

What was concerning for us was how she was able to get her hands on these files, because we have never released any of these files publicly, nor planned to.  Previously, I answered an ask requesting for the texts and I explained that we would not be releasing text files without permission from our past team.  Upon investigating our Dropbox, we realized that someone that had worked on the team had given access to a number of people to the files, and Karen may have been one of the people given access.  While it is our mistake for trusting this person, they have violated our trust and allowed people to take private files that were not theirs and use them (and in Karen’s case, claim them and profit off of them).  These files are the hard work of our team and to plagiarize them is infuriating.  It is disrespectful to our past members who have worked hard (and for free, mind you) for this team.  This project was started because we wanted to share this game that we loved with everyone, and we never wanted to profit off of it.  We never will, for that matter.

We urge everyone to be wary of this "translator” and to not support them in the case that they do come back.  They have dodged admitting to their wrong-doings and have gone under the radar without so much as an apology.  It worries us that they may attempt this again to other translators and teams, so we are spreading the word.

As for the status of this project, we quietly stopped work awhile back due to various events happening amongst otome fanprojects at the time that could’ve threatened this project and personal issues.  However, we never shut it down completely.  We toyed with reviving the project at the right time because we all wanted to release this game (and still do!).  Of course, this is not how we wanted to come back.  But with events transpiring how they did, we are planning to return to this project.

When we have a more definite plan, we will update again.  But for now, we ask for your support in spreading the word about this person and your eventual support when we come back!

Un:Birthday Song English Translation - Recruiting Translators + In need of ROM Hacker for BroCon

Hello guys its been a while since I made a sort of update on tumblr. As you probably already know, my full english patch for Re:Birthday Song has been released! Woohoo!  After translating this game, I feel like I might translate the other (plus I got a chunk translated from the trial). This game isn’t as long (kinda short compared to Re:Birth) so I don’t expect it to be a long project. If all goes well it should be released by the end of this year (hopefully). So for now, I’m looking for translators that can help me out with this project. Just send me a PM via here or via my twitter. I typically use dropbox so I’ll have scripts set up there (or with an email provided I can email them directly).

Lastly, a lot of people have been asking about the Brothers Conflict project as of the past year or two. I apologize for the delay in responses and the lack of updates. I was focusing on my own project foremost and to be honest, I haven’t been able to do much in regards to it. I was initially a translator and have no experience in ROM hacking (since its a PSP game) and we dropped out of contact with our previous one. At most, our scripts were reformatted into a .tbl format. So, I’ll need a ROM hacker to proceed in hacking in the translated scripts. Albeit all the scripts are completed, not fully revised. However, no progress can be made without someone who’s able to insert the translated scripts into the game. So again, just contact me if you can or know someone who can help out with that.

Anyway, I appreciate the support. Sorry for the lack of updates for things, but as you know, these are fan projects so unfortunately setbacks are prone to happen with these sort of things with personal life, ect.

November Update -sort of-

Hello, guys!

As you already know, yes Brocon PP is 100% translated, but not completely edited. Plus there’s still scripts that need reformatting. Not only that but along with editing, we do still need to insert it into the actual game with a completed patch. There’s been a lot going on for both me and Kairi (especially her own school studies) and truthfully it’s been taking up most of our time.

That’s to say, we’re not just sitting here doing absolutely nothing. Progress makes its way, slowly, but still made. I felt the need to address the constant asks of how the project is going on and such. I understand people are curious since we missed an update from a few months after being consecutive about it, but please do not spam our ask with the same constant questions. There are a lot we’ve answered before and there’s no point in asking when it’s going to be released when we ourselves, are a bit unsure. I know it’s been a late notice but we are more or less a team w/ 3 people.

Thanks for the continued support but please be patient with us!

Since there is gonna be a vita port, do you have all the translated text in a document? I'm pretty sure they're only going to clean the art and not change the text. I want to support the game and buy the import for my vita if it isn't region locked. I, personally, would really appreciate that after you get stuff translated (which I really appreciate) could you post just the text?

Avatar

Hello.

I’m glad that you want to support the vita port but I cannot give you the translated text for the games. These scripts are the result of hard work from our translators and so unless they give permission to us to do so, we will not be publicizing them. Many others have already translated scenarios from the game (eg. Theresa has Yusuke translations on her own tumblr) and they are out there, while some scenarios were published here long ago as a treat to followers. Those are the easiest sources for translated portions of the game.

That aside, I wouldn’t recommend using translated scripts to play the game. It’s highly inefficient and takes a long time that it can get frustrating due to the fact that it’s hard to know where you’ll end up and which script each event corresponds to. These scripts aren’t labeled specifically after all and there’s a lot. You would probably end up at an event you weren’t expecting and then you’d blindly scramble to find which script it is (and then what happens if you don’t even have the script?). I know because I used to do this when I edited while listening to the audio - I had to stop that method because of this.

For future reference to others I’d like to ask for people to refrain from asking for the translated scripts because we will always say no. Please respect the hard efforts of our translators.

Hello, since my friend is looking for Brothers Conflict otome games in english, I'm here to ask you: do you know maybe where I can find them? It's really important >

Avatar

Hello.

Seeing as you’re asking the blog of the translation project that is in progress for said games, no we do not know because the games are not out in English at all.

Also, what is a ps vita port? I don't quite understand the news that came out :)

Avatar

Hello!

A PS Vita port means the two PSP games for BroCon will get a version for the PS Vita console. Essentially they will probably remain the same (route story-wise), but there may be new content added (new CGs, updated graphics, new stories or events, etc.) and an improved system. Basically a port aims to make an updated version of a game on - often a newer console compared to the original console the game was on - and improve it while possibly adding extra content.

I hope this was helpful!

Good afternoon. My sister is a big fan of this series and I am aware of your translation work, but' I can't seem to find your patch anywhere. Can you give me some instructions? Thank you :)

Avatar

Hello.

I’m sorry; the patch is not out yet, hence why you can’t find it. Please come back again when the patch is out!

First of all, I really want to thank your team for all of your dedication and hard work! I wanted to as that since you said that Brothers Conflict will be having a PS Vita Port, does this mean they will be in English translated? Or no, they're just getting a remake of the original game for the vita? And if so, would we be able to use your patch for the vita Brothers Conflict game? thank you >w

Avatar

You’re welcome! Thanks for your support!

To answer your question, no it doesn’t mean it’ll be english translated for Vita. It’s a port of both Passion Pink & Brilliant blue. And no you won’t be able to use our patch unfortunately. I’d love to somehow get our translation on the Vita version, but even Dangan Ronpa had an unofficial english translation for PSP and eventually got localized for the Vita version. So it being ported to Vita does increase the chance of localization! Popular titles like Amnesia, Norn9, and Code:Realize are already coming here, so it’s not out of the question.

August Update

Hi everyone! Are you ready to go back to school? I know I’m not. ;v;

You probably may know already but at Otomate Party 2015 it was announced that Brothers Conflict will be getting a PS Vita port (in addition to BroCon’s spin off series, Fortissimo, getting a PS Vita game of its own)! That has Theresa and I excited at BroCon’s games seeing improvements and a chance at localization.

That doesn’t mean we’re dropping this project though! In fact, that only means we’re continuing so you can have a taste of what’s being remastered! Theresa and I have resumed work on the scripts and we are working hard to try to finish around the same time as Code: Realize and Norn9′s English release, if not by the end of the year.

Please continue to support us and do support the PS Vita port when it is released! (⌒▽⌒)

July Update

Happy July everyone!  Are you enjoying your summer?  :)

So, we’ve been getting asks about the progress of the game and so I decided to address all that in this update.

So as you all know, we’re in the process of editing.  However, we’ve had to stop temporarily due to RL events.  Theresa has had a big change that I will not go into detail about, while I have been swamped with AP summer work and flying cockroaches (sounds great, doesn’t it?).

Thus, I am not sure we’ll be able to hit our goal of a end-of-summer release date.  But if we do have to move it I am thinking around the same time as Norn9 and Code:Realize releases.

I’m so sorry for this delay, as I know everyone is looking forward to it.  But I please ask you to understand that as it stands we are a 2-3 person team that have our issues outside of this project.  We have not forgotten nor abandoned it; and as soon as we can, we’ll resume our work.

Thank you for your support.

Regarding Brothers Conflict: Passion Pinks translation, will you be keeping the original Japanese speech with English text or will the voice acting be completely removed?

Avatar

Hello!  It’ll be the original Japanese audio with English text.

June Update!

Happy Father’s Day everyone!  I hope you all are having a great summer.  My apologies for not updating last month.  I was swamped in standardized testing and right after those tests I was slammed with nonstop assignments and finals.  But school is finally over and I can focus on other things now!

And now, for some numbers!

-Approx. 38% of the entire game is ready for reinsertion.

-Approx. 41% of the entire game is edited.

-Approx. 43% of the game is reformatted to the new format.

-Approx. 46% of the game is either edited or reformatted.

Looking at these numbers, we are almost halfway done with editing and reformatting.  These numbers do not include the scripts that Theresa and I are working on currently, so the numbers are not exact.  I hope to bring a better report next month!

hey, this is a little random question (or not), but I was wondering which level of japanese is possible to translate a game? I am learning japanese for awhile, but i'm still at the beggining, and I would love to translate games that hardly will be brought to america (and I'll improve my english, really >

Avatar

Personally, I believe even a little or decent amount of Japanese is enough to translate (I am referring to fan made projects). I started off not knowing much but translated regardless. There’s always auto translation programs, japanese dictionaries, and all that can help you. That’s to say if you’re translating to english, it’ll make it easier if you’re fluent in it. However, most translators just get the direct meaning out of it and then it’s edited and proofread. Honestly, as long as you make sure you’re translations are accurate and you’re confident in your ability it’s totally possible for you to try and translate any game. Hope that answers your question!

Hi! so, um... I know there's not an english patch for Brothers Conflict: Passion Pink or Brilliant Blue, so, is there a way that I can play it, like a guide to do it with the game so I can understand what they're saying?

Avatar

There is no “guide” for translations of PP/BB.  Our team is making the english patch so I frankly can’t fathom why you need a “guide”.
