Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

prince of egypt is not a christian movie. the exodus is a jewish story. it’s found in other religions, and can even have a heightened level of significance, like for black (specifically african american) christians. but it is a jewish story from jewish scripture written from a jewish perspective about jewish persecution. enjoy it all you want. but don’t go on about how much you love prince of egypt then erase the fundamental jewish spirit of it.

Are you kidding? Portraying Pharaoh as sympathetic and human is intensely non-Jewish, and the last shot of Moses looking over the people worshipping the Golden Calf with the words ‘deliver us’ sung over them is a barely obscured Christian message. If you think this is ‘fundamentally Jewish’ and not Christian you’re probably not very familiar with either tradition.

Them, "It's not Jewish to show sympathy for the Egyptians!!1!"

Meanwhile, the Magilla, "The Egyptians were drowning in the sea. At the same time, the angels wanted to sing before God, and the Lord, God, said to them: 'My creations are drowning and you are singing before me?'"

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey @svartikotturinn can you point to the עגל הזהב (golden calf) for me in this image please

[image id: the last shot of the prince of egypt. our point of view is behind moses, who is holding his staff in one hand and cradling two stone tablets in the other. he is looking over a cliff, down at bnei yisrael who are camped out in the valley below. you see lots of people and tents and other structures, but no sign of any group of people dancing around a golden statue of a calf /end id]

You’re looking at it, stupid. Read Exodus 32. And also read up on how Jewish tradition actually depicts the stone tablets, because you obviously need to.

עוד אהבל אמריקאי שבטוח שהוא ”יהודי תרבותית” כי הוא למד מלה וחצי מסבתא שלו ביידיש, די נשבר כבר הזין

girl where is the dancing! where is the golden calf! if they wanted to depict this scene as the first time with the tablets, wouldn't it make sense for them to make that clear? why would you have a scene of an incredibly pivotal and deeply painful moment in the torah without,,, showing any of the important parts about it? wouldn't it make more sense that, in trying to find a scene to end the movie on with a happy note, they did more fast forwarding (which wouldn't be out of the question considering the rest of this scene) and decided to depict the actual revelation at mt sinai in which bnei yisrael are actually delivered from the immoral ways of the egyptians to the full covenant, thus bringing the story to a close?

here are some reviews specifically noting (often critiquing) the lack of inclusion of the golden calf:

it may interest you to note, however, that apparently you're not alone in mis-remembering the final scene! https://www.reddit.com/r/MandelaEffect/s/5ljE3f6aLt

i appreciate your concern about my understanding of my own situation as existing within a "culturally jewish" atmosphere, however i'm unsure of where you got this impression, as this is the farthest thing from what i believe, to the point that i'm planning my grad school plans around wanting to be in a place with more jews. as much as i love kentucky, a change of scenery would do me a lot of good. i need more jews and less transphobic legislation in my life

i also don't need this kind of pretentious holier-than-thou (or, more-jewish-than-thou) parroting of simply incorrect statements about judaism, so i'm exiting the conversation now. i leave you with this point of caution: refrain from making an assertion that x way of thinking isn't jewish, or that y never happens in judaism, or that z is The One Jewish Way To Do Something. there's never one jewish way to do something, as the talmud clearly shows. plurality of opinion and interpretation and practice is something that is generally celebrated in judaism, not maligned. i think if you opened yourself up to more experiences than just your own, you may very well find that this is one of the most beautiful things about judaism

honestly I do ship JonSatin but not in a SHIP ship kinda way and more in line with the whole Mary Magdalene/Christ Allegory idea. they are friends but they are also follower and leader and they have perceived duties and stations BUT they still manage slowly become closer and more tender and honest .............. and then it all takes takes a dramatic U-turn as the epilogue comes by because my ideal endgame for Satin is for him to get a cushy job in a castle somewhere and my ideal endgame for Jon is for him to become a semi-mythical lost figure they sing about like they sing about Orpheus in the end of Hadestown. do you get me. brought together by chance and separated by fate. maybe they'd had a chance if Jon were merely a bastard but unfortunately he is a prophesized hero-prince and Satin is just Satin. because this is feudalism and they ultimately belong in different classes even if they're both bastards. maybe they'll meet again someday, can't that be enough?

Yesterday our dungeon master tried to feel out the group to see if anybody had seen Supernatural, so he could introduce his summary of our campaign up to that point with the phrase "The road so far"

me: "I didn't realize Supernatural had any straight male fans."*

him: "Well, I was kind of into, you know, the overlap between, uh, Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock..."

I'm pretty sure this guy has never been anywhere near Tumblr in his life so I'm dying to know how he was exposed. Was Superwholock a Reddit thing too?

*i know intellectually that statistically like half of Supernatural's viewership for most of its run was in fact male and that young men were its target demographic, but emotionally...

Do you have any opinions on modern (post-1970s) movies that you feel capture the essence (in a good way) of Old Movies?

Avatar

No, unfortunately. That doesn't mean I don't like modern movies or that modern movies aren't good, but modern movies—and here I'm really using modern to mean post-2010, so contemporary movies—have different standards for pacing, characterization, budget, and production that make it harder (or impossible) to capture some of the magic of old movies. Even when modern movies clearly try to emulate that old-movie feeling—I'm thinking of La La Land, The Artist, The Shape of Water, In the Heights—they play the homage too broadly, or they ignore crucial components that make the original films work.

There's kind of too much to go into here without writing a full essay, but essentially, the Old Hollywood system—ugly, failed beast as she was—made some movies simply more accessible to make, due to the ongoing storage of props, sets, master craftsmen, crew, and onscreen talent that could move from one movie to the next without pause. If you needed a dancer, he was already on staff. If you needed a fancy bed, it was already in the warehouse. That kind of longterm storage is invaluable if you want to crank out movies quickly and cheaply because it saves so much time on individual negotiation and sourcing. Modern production companies have to work out individual contracts for every actor on every film; crew members have to negotiate rental contracts and source pieces from scratch; if you need someone with specialist skills, you have to contract them specially at a high rate, which a lot of small companies can't (or won't) budget to do. There's sand in the wheels where there needn't be any. It's wasteful, and costly, but that's the system modern movies are made with.

Which all means that even if the modern movie system wanted to make a classic movie musical just like the old ones, they couldn't, because the talent isn't already there—it hasn't been trained up enough, and there's not that breadth of knowledge you can only get from people who have been allowed to work in the same department in the same place for decades. Movies like La La Land fail, for me, because they present themselves as descendants of Fred Astaire or Busby Berkley movies, while missing the bit where Fred Astaire was a master of his craft. When you watch Fred Astaire dance—or Moira Shearer, or the Nicholas Brothers, or Ann Miller—you are watching a true artist at work, purposely showcased by the studios because they already have them on contract. Modern movies, on the other hand, tend to take people who already have star talent (as actors) and try to convert them into dancers/singers—or they pull dancers/singers off of Broadway, but then they don't have the star power built in. You end up with lackluster musicals where no one truly knows what they're doing, or they do but they're not built up enough by the studios to sell. And that's me discussing just on-screen talent for musicals—there is a huge loss behind the scenes, as well, for all kinds of movies, where roles that would have been filled by union crew who moved continuously from one job to the next have been swapped for freelance labor who live with immense turnover, financial insecurity, and knowledge loss. You could hand me the budget and I could try to make an old movie, but the industry itself has changed so much it's impossible to recapture that charm of steady, niche talent, the amazing possibilities of bonkers set design, and the ability to take a risk on a smaller movie because the other films being produced by the same studio can help balance the budget.

I've talked way, way too much about all of this! Sorry, I just have a lot of thoughts—and the one above is just one of them; the talent loss and storage issues are only facets of a much bigger problem that extends to how we watch movies today, how we market them, what we expect of them, and what's allowed in them. It's a crying shame because the talent is still there, but times change and so does the industry, for better or for worse. (And, just again to clarify, I don't think modern movies are bad—they're just missing a lot of the juice old movies got to play with, even if there's more talent available than ever before.)

JK Rowling has used her billionaire legal team to silence a Jewish woman for telling the truth about her contempt for trans victims of the Holocaust.

Scotland’s network of “freedom of speech” organisations, as per usual, have nothing to say about the use of wealth to gag critics of the wealthy.

However fast they race to condemn the LGBT+ community for saying the names of those who harm us. Statements at the ready to insist that transphobes no one wants to work with anymore must be given every possible opportunity to gain from their bigotry.

But it's not the billionaires who are being silenced, as our media breathlessly echo their every hateful proclamation.

It's journalists and activists forced to publicly humiliate themselves under the weight and the threat of billionaire legal teams or be driven into destitution.

We deserve better. Freedom of speech needs to mean something

The Streisand Effect strikes

This will swiftly become one of the primary things JK Rowling is remembered for. Trying to erase crimes of the Holocaust against trans people and then silencing Jewish journalists for calling her out.

With your help we can make sure JK Rowling is known as a Holocaust denier first, author of mediocre children's books second

Anyone has evidence of the crime Joanne allegedly committed?

Or are we supposed to believe this without the offending statement?

Like fucking idiots

Here. Could have just looked up "jk rowling holocaust denial"

also shifting the goal post, because that is not a claim anyone made

Denying any part of the holocaust or downplaying its severity is a crime here in germany, including the book burnings. And since she didn't admit to being wrong, or at least just quietly delete or ignore her first tweet, but doubled down, that is what she is doing.

Btw, even twitter seems to agree that what she said is against the law, which is why i can't even see the tweet for myself anymore:

*releases pack of dads into home depot* go……be free

invasive species encroach on lesbian territory

This is a common misconception because they’re such similar environments, but you should be aware that dads are native to Home Depot, while lesbians are actually native to Lowe’s. At this point, however, both dads and lesbians have made themselves at home in both Home Depot and Lowe’s to the point that trying to separate them back into their original ranges would probably do more harm than good to the delicate ecosystem of large chain hardware stores.

Avatar
ailithnight

A properly raised and socialized Dad will be perfectly comfortable cohabiting with Lesbians. Its not really “encroaching on another’s territory”. You wouldn’t say that about foxes in a forest that also homes bobcats, would you? No. It’s just two different species that have both evolved to live in similar/the same environment. As long as they recognize each other as equals, Dads and Lesbians are more than capable of cohabitation.

Now, if you were to release a pack of Lumberjacks into a Lowes or Home Depot, that’s where chaos will reign. Being adapted to a far harsher and more demanding environment, the Lumberjacks would simply push Dads and Lesbians both out and also consume far more than a sustainable amount of resources. It would be like releasing bears at a country club.

As a former timber-harvester… I feel this is potentially accurate in theory. But highly improbable in actuality.

Lumberjacks, like most megafauna species generally require more space than the average hardware store, even a big box store could provide. The misconception is that Lumberjacks are a social species because of how they often work and live together.

This is a matter of necessity, not preference, and a survival technique for thriving under the LogBoss.

A “pack” of Lumberjacks, if not under the environmental pressure of a LogBoss will naturally disperse until they each have a wide territory.

Lumberjacks rarely fight for territory.

One on one, a Lumberjack could drive out a Dad or Lesbian, however the latter tend to travel in social packs.

Lumberjacks will passively retreat on the presence of large numbers of people. Kind of like Sasquatch.

Getting a “pack” of Lumberjacks assembled would be hard enough unless they were forced into a Hardware Store by a LogBoss. In that case, they would already be in a heightened and potentially agitated state far above their natural behavior. This artificial scenario can be likened to a circus animal running amok. If it had been in the wild, the incident would not have occurred.

Free-roaming Lumberjacks are the cryptids of the Hardware ecosystem. They are surprisingly quiet and unobtrusive.

Please stop labeling Lumberjacks as dangerous roving social predators. They are intermediate level omnivores and remarkably peaceful unless threatened.

now how in the FUCK am i supposed to leave tumblr when a god tier post like THIS is just is just waiting for me daily?!?!?!

question where does the “art student” or “DIYer” “crafter” or “soap maker” or “miniaturist“ etc. who has ventured into the store for supplies fall into the ecosystem/what is their impact of said ecosystem?

Avatar
terulakimban

Most of the above are native to craft and hobby stores (art students, historically, are native to museums, but having been introduced to hobby stores, have found a niche for themselves and thrived), but all can be seen in hardware stores on occasion due to territorial overlap. They are generally low-impact, as they tend to stick to specific small areas and primarily utilize different resources. While a large group of any of them can be disruptive (art students, in particular, are known to travel in packs), in general, they are more likely to have territorial disputes with one another than with the local fauna.

A point of clarity -“crafter” is a bit misleading; while it conjures a specific image, much like ‘fish’ or ‘reptile’ it actually covers a broad array of wildly disparate species, and in general, more descriptive nomenclature is preferred. Fiber artists in particular are a genus to watch out for, particularly in groups. Beware a roving pack of domesticated quilters. They fear nothing, will go anywhere, and due to their social nature, will often seek interaction from other species that thrive best in solitude. They are quite friendly, and will happily adopt members of other species; the concern is that their adoptees do not always wish to be adopted.
