Tips for college!

So the exams are coming and fast! I’m ending my first  quarter of first year in college and I’ve learned some pretty useful things that I wish I knew and did sooner.

1) You DON’T HAVE the time. Don’t say that the exams are in a long time. Just do what you have to do when you can - the sooner the better.

2) Everyday, after your classes, put some order in the notes you took on that day. After 9hours, you forget about 60% of what you’ve heard before so check your notes to make sure everything is clear ( and/or readable if you are handwriting your notes) and maybe to highlight the things you didn’t get or are not sure about.

3) Every week-end, start making your summaries. It may seem like a lot, but I promise you, your future you will thank you for what you did. If you don’t understand or want to make sure, ask someone right away!

4) Stay healthy. Go outside once a day, go and do some sport, drink a lot of your water and try to eat healthy. It will boost your moral and it is a very important thing! And most important: GET SLEEP. Trust me on this, you are going to worship every second of sleep you can have.

5) A little every day is better than everything in a few days! Less stress, more success!

Hope this can help students in college (or not) and even future ones, because I really wish I realized it was all true all before so don’t say it’s just some cheap advices everyone gives! If we are giving these advices it’s because we experienced it and realized we were wrong.

Love, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and I wish you a lot of success in your exams if you have some!

September 24 2017 (part 2)

(first: sorry about not answering questions; I’m busy but when I am free I’ll get to them!)

Here’s my desk at UCLA this year! Hopefully second year brings many more A’s (because I really need it)

In this post, I’m going to talk about the study methods that have worked for me and that I learned during my time at UCLA!

(see another post like this about being healthy here)

Short Term Productivity

  • Use a stickynote/index card and write a couple goals for today only. Don’t write too many or you will feel overwhelmed! Stick it on your laptop or planner or notebook (somewhere you will see it)
  • Have a whiteboard at your desk and write down things you need to remember (like a simple equation or some vocab)
  • While waiting for something (the bus, your coffee, the shower to warm up) have something to recite in your head (probably something you already know, but would like to reALLY KNOW)
  • When you read, try to tie big concepts to things you would remember easily (like acronyms or symbols) like for example i remember gen chem oxidation as OIL RIG: Oxidation is Loss (of electrons) and Reduction is Gain (of electrons) and I remember the first four unordinary hydrocarbons from Me Eat Peanut Butter (lmao): Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane

Longer Term Productivity

  • Plan out your weeks!!! Plan when you will study on each day of the week and keep track of due dates
  • Make it a habit to do homework/assignments AS SOON AS YOU CAN (like right after you snack or something after classes)
  • Try not to think about how long you will study and rather think about the number of topics you will study
  • Don’t stop until you feel confident in your knowledge OTHERWISE YOULL JUST LOSE IT IT ALL
  • Keep your notes organized because you never know when something is gonna bite you in the butt again in the future
  • Review everyday. Like, Serioouslyyyy. It helps a lot.
  • Read before going to bed instead of being on your phone for 400 hours :C I THINK ITS TRUE THAT THE STUFF YOU READ BEFORE BED STAYS WITH YOU BETTER BC YOU GET TO SLEEP ON IT
  • Try to keep your area quiet or have only white background noise because if someone is talking about the weather and you’re studying math, best believe you’ll only remember the weather

Reading a Textbook

  • Most of the time, you don’t need to read the introduction paragraphs.
  • Read the bolded titles to see what you will be getting into
  • Before class you can skim lightly!! It will help you not feel lost in class
  • AFTER CLASS you will now FOCUS YOUR READING ON WHAT WAS SAID IN CLASS because most of the time, class-covered topics ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT! save yoself some time!!
  • When reading after class, do NOT just read. If you go over something that makes you go ??? in even the slightest way, read it again to understand. Look it up. Do it in THAT moment because you’re gonna forget to do it later.
  • If you don’t wanna read the whole darn book because ur lazy (like me) or you are cramming, READ!! THE!! SUMMARY!!!
  • The back of the book might have some seriously useful appendixes
  • Try not to skip the diagrams and pictures lol they’re there for a reason

Taking Notes in Class

  • dont be on your phone or whatever during class time Like actually PAy attention because if you learn it now, you won’t have to try to learn it again later (you can be on your phone later)
  • Take down everything written on the boards FOR SURE because if the professor/teacher thinks it’s important to write it, you better think it’s important too
  • Be an engaged listener! Don’t let it slide straight thru ur head
  • Try not to scribble your notes so you can read it later
  • Make CLEAR HEADERS for the topics so you can find those notes quickly
  • Def make friends in class in case you miss something on the notes ://

Doing Practice Problems and Homework

  • Get yoUR HOMEWORK DONE FIRST OF ALL
  • Homework is seriously a great study tool because your instructor assigned that FOR A REASON (aka it’s prob gonna be tested on)
  • Try to know what you are doing before you start the homework so that you don’t feel lost as heck doing it
  • When doing practice problems, if you have the answers, don’t be afraid to look at the answer the first time around if you don’t know how to do it. IVE SELF TAUGHT MYSELF SOOOOO MUCH by just looking at the answer to a question.
  • DONT RELY ON THE ANSWERS THO
  • Don’t memorize how to do the practice problems, you should memorize the method of solving the problem and understand each step clearly (and understand WHY you do that step!!!) just in case the test pulls some funky stuff on you
  • The more you can do, the better. But don’t be sleepy and do them because you won’t really retain anything

Other Random Things

My organic chem professor actually did a funny study on sleep and test scores. He said on his final exam he asked “How many hours of sleep did you get last night?”

and like obviously the more hours of sleep reported, generally the higher the student scored on the exam

SLEEEEPING IS GOOD FOR YOUR LEARNING

WHEN YOU SLEEP AND HIT THE REM CYCLE, YOUR BRAIN PROCESSES THE INFORMATION BETTER and it will really stay with you. So yall need to sleep. Don’t do the all nighters. You won’t remember anything

anyways like nike you should Just Do It

I hope you guys find this useful!! Remember that everyone has different needs and preferences, so take these tips as just tips and not rules!! Experiment with things, see what you like best, see what gives you the best scores.

Good luck with everything~ thank you for reading!

Back to School/Uni Tips!

I’m headed into my 3rd year of uni, so I thought I’d make a post sharing my tips on how to do well in school, not burn out, and keep your mental health relatively stable.

1. Snacks - seriously, don’t leave home without at least 2 substantial snacks in your bag. If you’re go-go-going all day and suddenly your sitting in a lecture about to crash cause you haven’t eaten anything all day, you’re gonna want snacks. Some suggestions: Cashews (they’re not super loud/crunchy, so they’re perfect for lecture snackin’), a granola bar, an apple, cherry tomatoes, trail mix.

2. Don’t buy the textbook before you go to your first class - I’ve worked at a university bookstore for 2 years, and every year, people end up buying 700$ worth of first year text books, and then they don’t even use them. Wait. and then wait some more. If there are required readings, then get the textbook, if your prof says there will be questions from the textbook on the exam, then get the textbook, but trust me, for 90% of first year classes (and a lot of other ones) you don’t need the textbook. SAVE YOUR WALLETS

3. Take notes efficiently - honestly the best way to take notes, is type up the lecture notes that are provided, BEFOREHAND, and then during lecture, fill in the blanks/add information/take down any important things your prof is saying as you go through the lecture on your laptop in a different color. This way you’re much less likely to miss any important information, you won’t be confused about what to take down, and you won’t fall into the trap of taking down notes that are already being provided to you. After class, or while making study notes, copy these notes out by hand to remember what you learned.

4. Keep it simple - pretty notes are GREAT if you have the time, but once you get to upper level uni, and you have 100 slides of notes to turn into study notes, you will not have the time to make your notes look aesthetically pleasing. Just get the info down so you can focus on learning it.

5. Have a designated study space - i did all of my highschool homework and studying in my bed, and 90% of the time, I ended up falling asleep. My bed wasn’t going to cut it for uni, so I got a cheap ikea desk, and it’s made me so much more organized and productive.

6. Take as much ‘you time’ as possible - take a bath. light candles. binge watch a tv show. veg out with a book for 4 hours if you have the time. do your makeup super special one day. get yourself that venti pumpkin spice latte with extra whip whenever you feel like it. Uni is a shitty time I’m not gonna lie. It’s stressful as f*ck, and whenever you can spare a couple hours or a couple dollars to TREAT YO SELF, do it.

7.  If you have anxiety, CUT THE COFFEE. caffeine is a huge trigger for anxiety. Caffeine takes away from your sleep, messes with your adrenalin systems, and can make you super paranoid and anxious all the time.

8. If you think your in the wrong major, change it - I started in geology, and I HATED IT. Now I’m in psych and I love it. It is never too late for a change of program. If you think you’re doing something you don’t wanna do, or your not enjoying it, don’t do it.

9. For mornings you have to be ready and out the door, or if you’re a person who always runs late, have a getting-ready routine and get it down pat. Have a mental list of things you need to do, and things you need to remember, and find out how much time it takes you. Get up at 8am, shower, wash face/brush teeth, get dressed, do makeup, pack bag, remember keys, wallet, laptop, notebook, pen and train pass, have breakfast, put on shoes, leave by 9am.

10. Utilize your time in transit. - finish a reading, go over flashcards, read study notes, listen to an album you’ve been meaning to listen to, read a book, read some fanfic, idk but don’t just sit there unless just sitting there is what you need.

11. Find a hobby or passion that is separate from your school/uni life. Whether its playing sports, or running, reading, collecting plants, making scrapbooks, curating a refined taste in tea, having baths, writing in a journal, find something that if you’re bored with watching shows or studying, you can go do it, and enjoy it, and get your mind off all the other shit that’s going on in your life for awhile.

WHY YOU SHOULD DRINK A SHITLOAD OF WATER DAILY Your brain is your biggest liquid asset. It is composed of more than 85 percent water. Little wonder then that if you are dehydrated, your thinking ability drops dramatically, as does the performance of your whole body. ● Water is 2nd only to oxygen in survival. A body can live for minutes without oxygen, for a few days without water, and several weeks without food. ● The human body is 60% water, blood is 90% water, muscles are 75% water, and bone is 25% water. Water is one of the main structures of the body. Drain your body of water you’ll be left with a few pounds of chemicals that are worth about $5 you guys! ●Your brain is 1/50 of your total body weight, but it receives 20% of the blood circulation, so 1/5 of your body’s water requirements come from your brain. ●Water balances and regulates almost every other system in the body — temperature regulation, digestion, and waste excretion. You cannot eliminate toxins from your body with insufficient water. ●Most headaches and feelings of fatigue are caused by dehydration. ●You lose about 10 cups of fluid each day in sweat, urine, and bowel movements. Even the air you exhale contains vital water vapor. ●If you wait until you are thirsty to drink, you are already dehydrated. Unlike hunger, thirst is a bad sign. ●Drinks that contain caffeine (colas and coffee) are diuretics, which means they lessen the body’s ability to absorb and retain water — they rob the body of water. ●It is the most time efficient way of improving your mood and overall performance. It takes seconds to drink a glass of water, but the benefits last for hours. ●Combined with a healthy lifestyle, drinking water increases weight loss.

I liked how my notes for our lesson in Pharmacology which was about the Introduction to Autonomic Pharmacology. I used a few pens for this because I didn’t want to make it look too colorful. We had our Chapter Quiz last Tuesday and it didn’t really end well since I wasn’t expecting it would be that hard. But I shouldn’t be discouraged because of that. I should try my best next time.

How’s your day going? I hope you’re doing fine ☺️ Always stay hydrated 🌹
