but he listens.ย ย ย ย he listens to theย ย ๐๐๐๐๐ย ย speak,ย ย ย ย watches the way the words form themselves on his lip and spill out quietly with as little regard to the subject matter as if he were merely explaining how to light a fire,ย ย ย ย like the souls that tremble for him and pray for as little as a sign from him mean little in his grander scheme.ย ย ย ย iโm happy for you,ย ย ย ย and it holds as little warmth as ira might have come to expect from him;ย ย ย ย the deep freeze of winterโs chill just beyond that door seems to have made itโs way like splitting water into his eyes and at last claimed ilias to spoil himself where he belongs.ย ย ย ย isolated,ย ย ย and as swallowed by uncaring land and sea as feasibly possible.ย ย ย ย still,ย ย ย ira listens.ย ย ย ย ever still the whispers of violence about him seem to fester just beneath the flesh surface of him.ย ย ย ย ever still can he feel his own heart tremble under the weight of the pain ilias causes even now.
while it consumes every available nerve in him not to rip the letter apart,ย ย ย ย offer it to miska to shred with her bear hunting teeth,ย ย ย ย it is double so the effort not to spit some volatile,ย ย ย ย unsavoury remark.ย ย ย ย if only they heard you say that,ย ย ย ira thinks;ย ย ย if only they could see that you are the black death,ย ย ย the bubonic plague,ย ย ย a collective of poisonous frogs in some famine sent by God to reap the world of any real,ย ย lasting joy.ย ย ย if only they saw you how i see you.

โ you didnโt want a family.ย thatโs fair enough.ย but whether you like it or not,ย you have one. โย ย ย ย be cautious,ย ย ย winchester wight;ย ย ย donโt let your rage cloud your better judgement.ย ย ย ย under the belly of a deep,ย ย ย dissatisfied sigh,ย ย ย he sips his coffee,ย ย ย ย at last stealing his gaze away to fester itself elsewhere for a moment of reprieve.ย ย ย it might be a world almost murderous beyond the wooden walls after the cover of deeper night,ย ย ย but even trudging through thick snow and losing his fingers and nose to indelicate frostbite seems preferable than spending any longer than necessary in the breadth of the vikingโs company.ย ย ย ย still,ย ย ย he remains seated.ย ย ย his tone deepens,ย ย ย quietens beside the fire.ย ย ย ย โ they ache for you.ย they love you regardless.ย ย ย iโm sure you must realize that i wouldnโt be here at all if it wasnโt important. โ

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ย ย for ilias to even consider mending whatโs already been lost.ย in this solar system and the next.ย here they sitย ,ย great immortal beings who have diedย ย thousands of deathsย ย who would willingly cling onto anything they can muster as a reason for prolonged life.ย otherwiseย ,ย theyโre bound to eternal solitude.ย there is no puzzle for them to solve and he is not some missing piece. ย all the aching and the longing and the love ย ; ย it dissipates.ย ย give it time and it will disappearย ,ย everything does.ย ย ย ย ย despite iraโs efforts ย , ย all ilias manages to hear is that haunting persuasion. ย the old prince mentions ย aching ย and ย love ย regardless of what the past decrees ย , ย he reminds the retired viking that thereโs a family regardless of his resistance ย , ย and yet in all this โโ there is no mention of ย why ย .
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย why the fuck was there a universe where a prince and a viking sit across from each other?ย well โ across but hardly facing each other because they canโt stand the sight of the other.ย and they canโt stand the sight of each other because of a few reasons that are best left in the dust of the byzantine empireโs decline and the mediterranean sea spray.ย some of it was jealousyย ,ย some of it was principleย ,ย most of it was bitterness because they were just too goddamn alike.ย by being alikeย ,ย they saw how different they could be.ย in some respectย ,ย there could have been a universe where they could have been each other where the prince was the bitter old piece-of-shit and the viking was the bitter old, but very much in love, piece-of-shit.ย ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย but that universe sure isnโt this one.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ilias slowly began to moveย ,ย despite miskaโs disgruntled protestย , he stood to his feet and his fingertips hovered over iraโs letter.ย he waited a moment before finally picking up the paper with a newfound delicate touch for stone-pressed paper.ย after running a fingertip along the refined edge , he moved towards the fireplace โโ letter in one hand and his tin of handrolled cigarettes in the other.ย standing in front of iraย ,ย he made sure to derive enough eye contact to portray the most sincerity heโs ever presented to a lick of royalty in his dirty long-ass life.ย ย โย you , of all people , should know for a fact that i want nothing more than to rot alone in my puddle of sopping pile of bitterness and bile.ย and that most of what i say , is horseshit.ย โย ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย kneeling down,ย he held two cigarettes to the fire and puffed on them both before holding one out to ira.ย ilias took a long drag from his own and opened the letter once moreย ,ย the reflections of the flames flickered against ivory white and black ink.ย ย โย i get that iโm causing some aching by keeping awayย ,ย but you have got to understand that my showing up for twenty minutes โโ that , it wonโt do anything on popped champagne and hugs.ย so โย ย โย ย ilias shook his head and tapped ashes into the fire and admired how beautiful iraโs signature wasย โโ yet how feeble his own name looked in the handwriting of the winchester wight.ย ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ilias smiled softly and ran his fingertips over the creases to refold the letter ,ย he sighed and nodded once.ย his free hand reached for a book that sat atop the mantel and nodded again.ย ย ย โย yeah.ย alrightย ,ย princess.ย iโll think about it and let you know two weeks prior to the date.ย ย maybe two daysย ,ย or two hours.ย ย โย ย he opened the book and slid the letter between the end of chapter 4 and the beginning of chapter 5 , slid the book back onto its dusty spot on the mantel , and promptly turned around to roll down his sleeves and to slide his feet into his boots.ย ilias reached for his coat and gloves ,ย ย ย โย i can drive you back to port tomorrow morning.ย i need the provisions anyway.ย โย ย ilias did not spare another glance at ira.ย he wouldnโt be able to handle those eyes after promising that heโd consider a reunion after four centuries.ย ย ย โย youโre free to use anything you find hereย ,ย iโll pull outย the cot for you tonight after i get more firewood.ย if you sit on the floor for a few minutes ,ย miska โ sheโll warm up to you fast , uh โย ย โย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย he leaned over and reached for the throat of an old axe.ย ย โย and ira โย โย he looked over his shoulder for a moment.ย the pause lasted a little longer than he wanted it to , so he opened the door.ย โย โย thanks.ย ย โย ย he paused againย ,ย unsure exactly what he was thanking him for.ย ย ย โย never calling you brother-in-lawย ,ย though.ย ย fuck that.ย ย โย ย and with thatย ,ย he walked into the tundra to chop wood for twenty minutes.ย ย because thatโs how long it took to wash out the fact that he just thankedย prince irรฆ of wessex.ย ย

It ย was ย barely ย a ย promise, ย but ย for ย the ย moment ย it ย was ย enough: ย such ย generous ย offerings ย bestowed ย upon ย him ย on ย his ย wedding ย day, ย all ย he ย could ย do ย was ย revere ย his ย good ย fortune ย and ย get ย well ย and ย truly ย drunk ย on ย it. ย His ย brotherโs ย concession, ย perhaps ย procured ย under ย duress ย but ย procured ย all ย the ย same, ย he ย rewarded ย with ย a ย glowing ย grin ย and ย a ย kiss ย on ย the ย mouth. ย "Tonight, ย I ย am ย the ย happiest ย man ย alive!โ, ย a ย proclamation ย bold ย and ย exuberant, ย meant ย not ย only ย for ย the ย entire ย room ย but ย earth; ย too ย happy ย to ย question ย anyoneโs ย intentions, ย too ย happy ย to ย address ย Iliasโ ย obvious ย unease. ย Seeing ย it ย didnโt ย mean ย he ย had ย to ย look. ย Seeing ย it ย didnโt ย mean ย he ย couldnโt ย try ย and ย celebrate ย it ย away. ย This, ย tonight, ย truly ย was ย his ย night ย โ ย and ย whether ย he ย deserved ย it ย or ย not, ย he ย would ย seize ย it ย with ย the ย entire ย might ย of ย his ย millennial ย body.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Even ย still, ย possibly ย sensing ย that ย for ย once ย his ย time ย was ย limited, ย he ย stuck ย by ย Iliasโ ย side: ย deluging ย him ย with ย disconnected ย recounts ย of ย the ย last ย few ย centuries, ย asking ย questions ย that ย remained ย mostly ย unanswered, ย and ย yet ย continuing ย to ย speak ย and ย laugh ย and ย drink ย until ย he ย was ย roped ย away ย for ย his ย hundredth ย dance ย tonight. ย Surrounded ย by ย them, ย all ย of ย them ย at ย last, ย he ย could ย feel ย something ย within ย him ย finally ย unwind. ย He ย could ย feel ย himself ย float, ย content ย and ย heavy, ย he ย could ย glide ย into ย his ย husbandโs ย arms ย and ย breathe ย wordless ย thanks ย into ย his ย neck. ย Later ย he ย would ย ask, ย later ย he ย would ย ask ย everything; ย but ย his ย mind ย was ย too ย light, ย too ย sparklingly ย bright ย right ย now ย to ย bother ย with ย practicalities. ย He ย was, ย indeed, ย the ย happiest ย man ย on ย earth.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐. ย ย severin couldnโt imagine anything going wrong ย , ย but thatโs what was happening. ย ignorance was a beautiful and joyful bliss but ilias was choking on air ย , ย caught dry in a sandstorm when severin was left to his own devices in a balmy paradise. ย ย who was he to put a veil over it all? ย ira used that word before ย : ย selfish ย . ย even now ย , ย as ilias watched severinโs smile melt into a look of worry. ย for once , it seemed that alcohol was on iliasโ side. ย he was working with the haziness and a slowed heart rate to attempt to buy ย him some more time to convince this man that it was simply delusional to believe in a peace offering. ย this was not concession ย , ย this was simply an act of cowardice. ย apologies would get them nowhere ย , ย it would simply tie a bow that would slowly loosen over the years only to be tied again and again until the ribbon wears thin. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย it was the lingering smile that made ilias freeze. ย it was the same look ย , ย the exact one that he woke up to one day in a cold sweat after seeing ira โ clad in silver chain and iron armor , soiled with clay and blood like true royalty. ย he could still see the way severin silently asked ilias if he could see him yet ย , ย if the dreams began to speak and for weeks ย , ย ilias ย lied ย until the dreams haunted him. ย until iraโs face was laden into the back of iliasโ skull. ย it was a gut reaction ย , ย a selfish reaction , ย one that would spark a seemingly molecular reaction to serve him 400 years of exile. ย ย all it took was a look to bring him into a mild panic. ย this was temporary ย , ย a moment for the sake of allowing severin to feel happiness for once despite all the things that went unsaid. ย after all ย , ย ilias was the failed attempt. ย maria was a chance in the making ย , ย she even got fides to dance. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ilias winced at the memory of iraโs expression as he reluctantly handed over a curated invitation to a moment in paradise. ย selfish ย , ย the word sizzled and seethed because severinโs smile finally fell. ย โ ย i ย โ ย i know ย , ย itโs not โย โย ย ilias shook his head and mustered what little he could provide in reassurance. ย โ ย no ย , ย thereโs no trouble. ย โ ย ย ย what keeps you from staying here? ย ย ย ilias shook his head again , that was still a conversation nobody was ready to have. ย โย i just canโt stay very longย ,ย ย i โโ i have people waiting for me.ย backย ย home.ย โย ย if severin and ira found comfort in a veilย ,ย then ilias would find his comfort in a lie.ย

exactly one year ago, a man under the name of kal anderson entered st. peterโs inquiring about jobs in the ashford area, and one way or another never left. exactly one year ago @kalixus and i began plotting a story that seemed like a harmless, random plot at first, and became much more โ one year later itโs redefined fred as a character, led me to rewrite her whole story, gave me a lot more insight into her that i couldโve possibly gained in any other way, and built a whole universe i am hopelessly in love with, so rich with characters and backstories and plot twists and symbolism that i simply canโt seem to ever get bored of it. it pisses me off daily that there is no movie, no actual way for me to see this whole story unfold if not in my imagination: but soaking in the writing of it, in the worldbuilding and all that came with it, that alone has been a little miracle. and this is my modest attempt at making it a little more tangible than real. happy one year of noir vibes, red and teal contrasts as a metaphor for fire and ice, sad songs alternated by really fucking cute ones, idiotic wire convos alternated to really fucking heartbreaking ones, unlikely friendships forged at the mouth of hell, more hades and persephone allegories than any human is allowed to have, and two broken idiots who decided to save each other, over and over again โฅ
โThe personal, as everyoneโs so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here โ it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide from under it with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way, you stand a better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous marks the difference - the only difference in their eyes - between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that itโs just business, itโs politics, itโs the way of the world, itโs a tough life and that itโs nothing personal. Well, fuck them. Make it personal.โ
