Ya know I'm just gonna say it I love how poc representation in media is increasing but I'm sick of seeing next to zero percent representation of south asians/desis

White women bossing around moc isn’t revolutionary and I’m tired of these so called feminist shows purposely making moc look bad for the progress of white women…this just serves to equate moc to white men, and completely ignore the fact that white women have oppressed moc for years. Like can these progressive shows stop pitching moc as enemies of white women? That’s gross, racist and not empowering at all…it’s just white feminism and supremacy.

Do you know what irks me? When people tell me I look white or half white. Like how is that a compliment? Why is looking white a good thing. I’m a South Asian girl, my brown skin is beautiful and is not ‘the unconventional kind of beautiful’, who says that white skin is the conventional beauty?I am proud of my tanned skin, thick hair, brown eyes. I do not want your white skin, thin hair and blue eyes. We South Asians are put down by the media, we are not to their standards of beauty. But we know the power we have in our hearts, our south Asians roots, the culture in our bones, the dark hairs on our arms and the tanned skin on our bones is what makes us beautiful. That is who we are and no one can take away our beauty.

sexualized-desexualization of south asian women

(just listing my favorite quotes from this discussion for future reference because they successfully communicated what I have always felt but was never able to describe.  all bolding is mine)

Harry sees Cho as this unattainable delicate flower, while completely undervaluing Parvati. Ron loves Hermione and doesn’t even see Padma. Both Parvati and Padma express that this makes them upset, but Harry and Ron are completely dismissive… They are made to be entitled to using two darker-skinned girls as pawns in their pursuit of lighter-skinned girls.”

“And don’t even get me started on that scene in the movie where Hermione enters the room, all dressed up, and Parvati exclaims, “She’s beautiful!” Fuck that!”

“…we are exotified in this bizarre hyper desexualized context, the kind of bodies you wouldn’t mind looking at but generally don’t want to touch.” (YES YES YES YES THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU)

“On the other hand, because of the appropriation of yoga, the kama sutra, even the exposed midriff when wearing a sari, South Asian women deal with an interesting, contradicting sexual stereotypes: always a virgin but expected to be kinky, hyper flexible.”

“ Submissive but not delicate, less human than woman but not woman enough. Filthy therefore a virgin and untouched yet exotic and thus desired.”

When do you think Hinata's character went bad?

I think the consensus is Pein Arc? IMO, she never had the potential people spoke of so often. She’s always a satellite character, and a badly written one, even in Part 1.

People tend to make a big deal about her clan in her backstory, but the character who’s central to the Hyuuga clan plot was Neji. He’s the one who showed the readers the unfair slavery practised by the Hyuuga. He’s the one who told the readers the practice amounted to destiny cos his fate was decided at birth. He’s the one who fought Naruto and delivered the exposition on destiny, and setting one of themes in part 1. Hinata was just a necessary plot device for Neji to project his angst, he’s the loser in the lottery just as Hinata was the winner.

Hinata’s own backstory was actually rather mundane. It’s just another sibling rivalry + acknowledgement story. It’s the same shit as Sasuke angsting over his father’s favouritism towards Itachi and his approval. It added nothing interesting to the political aspect of the Hyuuga clan. Her backstory was written to set her up to be Naruto’s fangirl. She needed some personal struggle in the story to cause her to look for inspiration from Naruto. Her backstory is why she’s a Naruto fangirl. The fact Kishi chose to add a unnecessary romantic aspect to her admiration of Naruto instead of writing something that would deepen her character’s involvement in the clan issues, is further evidence that Kishi only saw her as satellite character for Naruto, and potential shipping fuel.

It’s stupid Hinata got glorified for everything she did or didn’t do. People don’t glorify Naruto for using Sasuke as motivation, people don’t glorify Sasuke for earning his father’s acknowledgement. Hinata got praised to the sky for the same shit because there’s a romantic aspect to it. This fandom is so thirsty for romance, it’s not even funny.

People also like to argue her shyness meant she had the potential to overcome it and be a inspirational character. Y’all overestimated Kishimoto. She’s never intended to be a real shy character who aspires to overcome the condition for her own personal growth. Her shyness was not portrayed to have negatively impacted her social life outside romance, i.e. preventing her from making friends, causing her problems when working together with teammates etc, these aspect were not explored. Instead, her “shyness” was fetishized, and was used as shipping baits. Her “shyness” was most often portrayed through blushing, fainting, and stalking around Naruto, her crush. Her “shyness” was not portrayed as a debilitating flaw, but a cute quirk for young girls who’re having a crush on a boy.

People are often less harsh on Hinata cos some of them relate to her shyness, she doesn’t deserve such extra sympathy, she’s not even a realistic shy character. Her pretentious moe shyness written for the male gaze is actually extremely annoying and degrading.

What KnY has taught me about healing (Hashira)

You can be a light regardless of emotional trauma. No goal is too worthless to achieve. Be the hero for others that you would have needed.

You don't have to push away the ones that you love in an attempt to save them. Kindness and softness go hand in hand.

Your truth is more important than the false narrative by others. You're worthy of love, life, and your truth. Be strong, but be gentle.

Dare to challenge the norms and status quo of the places you were raised in. Live flamboyantly to the beat of what you believe is right and just.

Your differences make you unique and worthy of love. You don't need to minimize who you are to be accepted by others.

Don't blame yourself for the things you can't control. Accept that you deserve your accomplishments. You're where you need to be.

What has been done to you does not reflect how much you deserve to be loved by others. You are not contaminated.

Physical strength isn't the only way to be strong. Use your abilities to the best that you can.

The longevity of life is unpredictable. Create a life of good for yourself that is fulfilling for yourself and others.
