Why in the night sky are the lights hung?
Why is the Earth movin' round the sun?
Floating in the vacuum without a purpose, not a one

It seems to me, after a quick pass, that Helplessness Blues occupies an odd space that some people might not like. Like foie gras, it’s highly anticipated, carries an unignorable social connotation with it and regardless of your preparation, still might threaten to upturn the stomach as it slithers down your throat for the first time. Also like foie gras, many of us will exclaim after the first listen to Helplessness Blues, “I love it!” and put the record for weeks before we’re able to convince ourselves we want to try it again. To align myself with a certain pedigree of food snobbery, though, this record might require a sort of dedication. Here’s Lorelai, perhaps a benchmark track for record. It’s certainly odd, veiled behind a bounding rhythm and reverb heavy harmonies… And yet, I’m not sure if it’s just plain cool, or something people will love or hate for its playfulness and beautiful (corny?), unwieldy structure. You tell me, huzbondes and yfs.
W H O K I L L, Dave and More (and other Bob Dylan punz): A week in summation
This has been an important week, Huzbondes and yfs. New York hit us hard. It sunned, it rained, it snowed, it hailed, it thundered and lightninged. And, we walked- on sidewalks and other concretes, hopping puddles and going about business. So it is, so it is. May the weekend bring joy.
Garbus vs. Matthews: A battle of good versus evil, the dark versus the light. May the good prevail. It certainly seems she will: Click for the amazing tUnE-yArDs set at SXSW. W H O K I L L is just around the c o r n e r... She's all I can talk about. She's all there is to talk about.
Nardwuar goes head to head with Odd Future. Wins, I'd say. Good work, ol' boy.
Two responses to John Taylor's world record attempt (For those of you who haven't seen it, click here to edify yourself). One, a demonstration of the role of beauty and elegance in music. The other, a marker of how dumb guitar players are. You pick which is which.
