Mordecai blinks, his eyebrows raised.  That certainly isn’t the reaction, he expected out of her, although perhaps it was foolish to assume she would roll over passively.

“I apologize,” he says, but there is no conviction behind it, stated as simply as if he is telling someone what time it is.  “I just thought that, given how entrenched in the criminal underground you already are, hiding a few cases of alcohol would not be a problem for you.”  In his experience, once somebody gets into the life, it is very difficult to get out, and once you help someone hide a body, you might as well help them hide liquor, too.

“Is there any particular reason that you would not be able to do this?”

Jack’s eyes narrowed slightly, recognizing the flatness of Mordecai’s tone for what it was, but like him, she was nothing if not professional when it came to work.

“Hypothetically, no, hiding alcohol is no more difficult than anything else I’ve done,” she conceded, frowning. “But practically? Forewarning would be nice. And where are the cases coming from, and in what state? I can’t have things cluttering up my work space unnecessarily, and I do keep a certain degree of sterility where I can, you’re aware. A laboratory, even a rudimentary one, is not storage.”

“I’ve almost died before.”
The memory of those creatures crawling out of the darkness and attacking the caravan were still fresh, vivid. For a moment, she had wanted to die herself, but years of barely hidden rage had broken free instead. Mic couldn’t even swear that those who had survived the initial attack on the caravan hadn’t been killed by her moments later. Her eyes went to his flute, fingers twitching to reach for her weapon but she didn’t. Not yet.
“I stopped with your kids, didn’t I? If they stopped, what reason would I have to hurt anyone? Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun and some people deserve it but if it’s between being bored and having a bunch of pretentious assholes with swords show up, I know what I’d pick,” she said.

“I’ve done both,” he informed her, still in that helpful, cheerful tone. “Dying’s worse than you’d think, worse than you realize until it’s over, but almost dying hurts more. I wouldn’t recommend either, if you can help it.”

A slight smile returned to Wei Wuxian’s lips as she continued, and he acknowledged her point with a nod of his head, tucking Chenqing behind his back once more. “You did,” he agreed. “And I appreciate that. Do you think you’d be able to stop for good, then, if your vanquishing was known to everyone?”

“No.”
The word wasn’t harsh; it was firm, full of disbelief and concern, falling out of his mouth before he could really stop it. It was unlike him and Lan Wangji’s jaw clenched slightly. He looked towards the floor. They had slept in less comfortable places but not for long. Wei Ying shouldn’t be living like this and he was angry that he had been forced into a situation like this, merely for doing what was right.
“You shouldn’t sleep on the floor. You need rest,” he said, voice softening. It was clear that Wei Ying hadn’t slept well recently and Lan Wangji didn’t want to add to that by forcing him to give up any amount of comfort on his account. A quiet sigh escaped him. “I can I sleep there.”
As long as it was after nine, he could sleep anywhere.

“No?” Wei Wuxian repeated, his small laugh this time more of a disbelieving huff, but a laugh nonetheless. It seemed Lan Zhan was already helping in that regard, even if he was doing so by being stubborn.

“We don’t get guests here often, but I can’t have mine sleeping on the floor,” he pointed out. His tone was only faintly exasperated, touched here and there by some of his old humor, stretched thin as it was. “What will Granny say when she finds out? You’re going to get me into trouble.”

There was no use in pointing out now that what passed for a bed was merely straw on a raised bit of stone, not much better than the floor when it came to rest and comfort. It was the principle of the thing now.

melancholic romanticism

corroded kisses, riding the subway at 3am, reluctance: you're melancholic romanticism. like cold coffee, gone bitter and sharp, melancholic romanticism is not all as bad as it seems. there's often solace to be found in this type of romance, and many find it comforting. you're most likely a lone free thinker, plagued by your own thoughts and feelings, or so you think. partners never seem to love you enough, and you discover their imperfections all too soon. you've noticed that you feel more alone with them around than you do by yourself. you don't hide from people themselves, you simply elude love, which isn't to say you're not interested in a bit of romance here and there. sometimes you just wish you could fall in love with the moon, she'd understand you.

Lain wants to open the books, to confirm what he says, and maybe even to write in them, to fill them with things that he can actually read. But he moves on so quickly that she doesn’t get the chance.
The game room is interesting, though, and she runs a hand along the edge of the table.  A game usually played by two or more people, set up in a way that it can only be played by one.
“𝙸𝚝'𝚜 𝚙𝚘𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚋𝚕𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚍𝚒𝚍𝚗'𝚝 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚒𝚝 𝚊𝚝 𝚊𝚕𝚕.  𝚆𝚎 𝚋𝚘𝚝𝚑 𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚕𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚌𝚎𝚜 𝚊𝚝 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚔 𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎."  Although, if that is the case, then she might stand to gain very little from exploring here.
"𝙸 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍,” she says.  "𝙸 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍 𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚊𝚕𝚕 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍.“  A hint about her true nature, one that will probably be brushed off by his paranoid mind.  "𝙸 𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚏𝚎𝚛 𝚙𝚎𝚘𝚙𝚕𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔𝚜.  𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚒𝚛 𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚜 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚞𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚞𝚌𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎𝚍 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚞𝚗𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚍𝚒𝚌𝚝𝚊𝚋𝚕𝚎 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚋𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚒𝚝, 𝙸 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚔.”
Her eyes remain fixed on the identical orange balls.  "𝙳𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚎𝚗𝚓𝚘𝚢 𝚋𝚎𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚊𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚎?  𝙾𝚛 𝚍𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚔 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑𝚝 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚎?“

Do we know that?” he countered, giving her another studious look. Of course, she could just mean Ellis and the rest of the school board. and their being heavy-handed. Or maybe not. But that kind of thinking was going to get him nowhere. “I think this place is all my making, though. It feels...familiar, and the stuff that’s come back to me matches up. I just don’t know what I was thinking.”

Hal was about to press her on what kind of pretention claimed to have read everything when Lain just about hit him in the gut with her next question.

“I...don’t know,” he answered finally. He knew he was avoiding eye contact and how that would read on an evaluation, but fuck that. “I think I ought to be at the moment because someone tried to kill me and I don’t know who. Seems like a good time to be alone, don’t you think?”

Mist continued their lazy stretch as though they hadn’t heard her, feigning boredom, but their face was pulled into a thoughtful frown.

Almost’s a weird word to use with dying,” the genasi pointed out at last, flicking their gaze toward Maggie. “Pretty sure actually dying’s more boring than almost dying, so I don’t know what you’re complaining about. At least you have something to do.”

“Only about a couple hundred years ago,” Kai replied, grinning through the mess of blood and gore dripping from her chin. No one ever said sirens weren’t messy eaters. “And you’re not so bad yourself.”

Nodding toward the final remaining member of the group they’d busted up tonight, cowering against the wall like he thought they wouldn’t see him, Kai added. “Do you want to or should I?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hal demanded, sitting up to glare at her. The fact that his pulse jumped up as well was hardly worth noting--but what did she mean? What them? His parents? Ellis and Mae$tro? His classmates? Someone else entirely? “If this is about Ellis reading my files, that’s against the school’s contract and illegal, and I’ll sue.”

There was little venom in the pronouncement, because there were no teeth to it. Hal’s parents would never sue the stupid school, even for an invasion of privacy. All Ellis had to do was say it was out of concern. So he switched tactics entirely, to goad it out of Lain instead.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t think I’m hiding jack shit.” Nothing on the servers anyway. He hadn’t recorded anything. Had Nanny? Had Lain?

Exactly. After all, if you’re not murdering for your own enjoyment, what’s the point of doing it at all? It might as well be manslaughter at that point, and any old random accident can manage that. Murder should be personal.”

“Yeah, the frogs probably wouldn’t do us much good anyhow,” Norman says.  After all, the spirits of dead frogs couldn’t tell them anything about how ley lines work.  “But if they do come up in any way, I’ll handle them.”  Dead frogs are nothing compared to Noah’s face some of the other things he has seen.
“Well, I’m only in fifth grade, so I probably don’t know that much science, but…”  The fact that he often lets his mind wander in the middle of lessons probably doesn’t help either.  “We’re learning about the different layers of the atmosphere in school right now.  I don’t know how that helps us, but that’s what my homework is about.”  Homework he is procrastinating on very hard with this extracurricular project.

“Fifth grade’s not too bad. You’ve probably learned a lot that you don’t even realize, and you’ll remember it in like college or something. It’ll be great.”

At least, Noah assumed that was how it worked. From what little remained of his memories of high school, he must have remembered some things from elementary school, right?

“The atmosphere has layers?” He automatically glanced outside, as if he could see them. “See, you already know more than I do. I might have just forgotten it, to be fair, but I don’t know it now, and that’s what counts. Who knows--maybe the atmosphere affects, like, the temperature of the ley lines or something. Wait, no, that’s dumb, they don’t have a temperature, really...”
