This fic has been five years in the making. Three years ago I fell into a depression pit from which there felt like no escape and left this fic 80% complete but essentially abandoned. One year ago I managed to drag myself out again and write the penultimate chapter. Then, my muse said GO WRITE TED LASSO FIC INSTEAD and it wasn’t until today that I was able to finally finish the last chapter. I am so proud of myself for the growth I’ve made and how I didn’t let this fall into obscurity. It feels good to write a satisfying conclusion to something I poured so much of myself into. NOW GO READ IT!

in 2024 let’s stop saying people are “starting a family” when we mean “having kids”

people in a relationship with no kids still have a family

a single person still has a family

your family does not begin and end with having children - it doesn’t even begin and end with being related - so let’s just say what we mean and stop the unknowingly demeaning people without kids

What are your thoughts on Ted? Is it good he went home?

These are two separate answers but I'm gonna try to combine them into one thought bubble (bear with me).

My short answer regarding Ted's ending is that you can't create a fully fleshed out character for 2-3 seasons and then in the final hour decide he was Mary Poppins all along. The Mary Poppins is meant to be strange, not-quite of normal ilk. She's the static character who leads the change in others, the one who inspires. You don't usually see the inner thoughts and workings of a static character.

From the very first time the audience meets Ted, we understand that this is not a static character because he is literally one of our starting POVs. We see his uncertainty about flying across the globe to go teach a sport he doesn't understand. We see him turning to Beard for reassurance. We see him stick his hand out where it isn't wanted while he tries to find common ground with people in a new country. We see the beginnings of a panic attack at the press conference.

That is is episode one. He is not a static character. He is not a strange and unusual person impossible to understand. He is inspiring, yes, but that is because of his humanity- his kindness.

He is not a Mary Poppins.

it kills me that jamie never found out ted didn't give him back to man city or want him to leave. that he didn't find out ted stormed up to rebecca's office and wanted him back. that he wasn't some disappointment. and sure at the end of the show he knows richmond wants him there, but he doesn't know that they always did. kills me.

Everyone’s happy for Colin, he’s not the first to get married but he is the first to have a kid.

He’s invited people over in groups of three of four, but he invited just Roy and Jamie over together.

It’s a fabulous time, Colin and Michael are exhausted but so happy, Jamie ends up holding Lucy for most of it. Roy offers that the two of them can go take a nap if they want. He took care of Phoebe when she was this little, he knows how babies work.

He leans in the kitchen door way watching the two of them stagger off into their bedroom, he can hear Jamie talking to Lucy. He turns to the living room walking in with a bottle, he stops.

Shit.

God Jamie looks fabulous with a kid in his arms.

Fuck.

fic where roy does that classic sudden frantic kiss and he also grabs jamie by at least one wrist and has him pressed against a wall and the whole deal, and of course jamie kisses back like the boy is ascending directly into heaven at this treatment, BUT

i've said it before and i'll say it again: roy kent will take any opportunity to feel like a bad guy, and jamie's Whole Thing provides a lot of opportunity. so he realizes what he's doing and despite jamie kissing back and otherwise very much not resisting him in any type of fashion, he decides obviously he is forcing himself on him or whatever

and jamie sees this happening in roy's face before roy can even commit to it and react that way, and he says, "don't overthink it"

but roy does, and he drops jamie's wrist and leaps back like he's been burned - or, more accurately, like he's burning jamie - and jamie's in a rush now don't go don't go

he says, "no, you're overthinking it! wait!" and he grabs roy's wrist before roy can run off and punish himself by never hanging out with jamie ever again or whatever his fucking plan is here. he tugs roy back in close, and roy goes because it's jamie and the warmth of his body is right there and he can still feel his lips and...

jamie puts his voice all soft now, soothing like to a spooked horse, you know. he says, "c'mon granddad, you know i could fight you off easy if i wanted to. and you know i'm not worried about being impolite to you. yeah? i kissed you back." he puts roy's hand back around his wrist, squeezes it tight there. "i like it."

and they do that nose brush thing, that are we gonna kiss no we shouldn't but we can't not nose brush, you know, jamie tempting him and roy clinging to the Problematic Dynamic he made up because he doesn't trust himself, until finally the tension coalesces and their mouths meet again

and roy pushes jamie right back up against that wall, and holds his wrist tight, and jamie opens up his body to accept roy's against it and clings to roy's shoulders to hold him there and kisses him back
