There are a lot of times I feel like just…flipping the vegan script.

It’s not ‘polyester’ it’s plastic

It’s not ‘vegan leather’ it’s plastic

Its not ‘faux fur’ it’s plastic

Plastic is a pollutant and causes far more damage to the environment both now and in the future than leather or wool.

Please stop telling me that the Plastic Lyfe is the only life, it is not. My leather shoes will last a decade where pleather is lucky to last 12 months. Leather (and wool) decompose and are renewable. Plastic is neither of those.

THANK YOUUUUUUU~

A single wash cycle of plastic-based fiber (polyester, poly fleece, faux fur) may release 700,000 pieces of microplastic into our waters. Nasty stuff.

Wool is the most environmentally friendly fabric despite being an animal product.

Using wool isnt even harming sheep

Sheep need to be sheered or else it will cause serious problems. It’s a mutual relationship, we help sheep get rid of the pesky wool and it gives us a very useful material.

This has been a Burning Hot Take™

Also chickens will lay eggs no matter what!! That’s literally what chickens do!!! You are not eating “chick embryos”!!! If you’re worried about supporting the corporate mass farming industry, buy from a local free-range chicken owner! Almost anywhere has farmer’s markets!

This is the part where we talk about how the demand for agave nectar as an alternative to honey is destroying the habitat of the endangered long-nosed bat, which lives on agave.

Bees literally make an excess of honey, too much for them to handle. Beekeepers are helping them by taking honey. BEE MOVIE WAS LITERALLY ABOUT THIS HOLY SHIT

“Representation” is a term reserved for fictional characters and fictional stories, where the creator has full control over what identities to include and what kinds of stories to tell. Those characters aren’t real; they have no feelings to be hurt or privacy to be disrespected. They can be anything the creator or the consumer wants them to be.

Actual human beings, including historical figures, are not representation. They are people. They don’t owe you relatability, and they don’t exist to give meaning to your life as Someone Like You™. If you relate to someone or look up to them as a personal hero, great! But their life stories and choices aren’t about you and your needs, their lives are about them. You are not entitled to the intimate details of their lives, nor do they owe it to you to be your ideal “representation.” They owe you nothing.

Actual human beings are not fictional characters for your consumption.

Remember that.

Yes, pollution is caused primarily by companies, national coal, the pentagon, ect. but small scale community clean up efforts are still good! cleaning your local park wont save the ozone but it will make life better for the neighborhood kids and wildlife! world problems arent a zero sum game. Small improvements are still improvements that make things better and I dont see how deriding them is positive in any context. You can agree there needs to be more large scale efforts without saying small scale efforts are useless and dont matter.

Thanks @laangdons!

Although large-scale societal efforts are more important, small scale efforts are also great and should never be discouraged. It’s still worthwhile to make your little corner of the earth a little healthier!

Some of the ways that small-scale lifestyle changes can help:

1. They can create a greater market for sustainable products, making them less of a novelty and over time making them less expensive and more accessible.

2. They help move the societal standard in the direction of ecological consciousness. Human beings like to imitate what we see others in our social group doing.

3. Small-scale actions foster greater investment in the cause and can eventually lead people to greater support of large-scale movements.

4. They help people feel good about themselves and feel involved, which is good for mental health and staving off hopelessness and apathy.

5. It’s good practice for the large scale societal and lifestyle changes that will be necessary to live in a more sustainable future society. Just because that future isn’t here yet doesn’t mean you can’t start practicing now!

The important thing is not to substitute small-scale actions and lifestyle changes for supporting larger movements.

If you can and want to do both then that’s wonderful and you should do both! But we can’t pat ourselves on the back for picking up litter and then as a result not lend our energy to organizations that are striving to fight climate change, biodiversity loss, etc on the world stage.

Any amount of effort is better than no effort. Just because an action won’t save the world on its own doesn’t mean it is meaningless.

My name is Tony Stark and I’m not afraid of you. I know you’re a coward, so I decided… that you just died, pal. I’m gonna come get the body. There’s no politics here, it’s just good old-fashioned revenge. There’s no Pentagon. It’s just you and me. And on the off-chance you’re a man, here’s my home address: 10880 Malibu Point, 90265. I’ll leave the door unlocked. That’s what you wanted, right?
