i’ve been too upset about like. literally all of the everything i’ve seen from beastars to put together a comprehensive post but i’ve got ppl in my notes claiming white nationalists and nazis don’t exist actually so. since y’all are allergic to thinking critically here’s a bunch more sources linked.

Hey, so, I’ve been seeing my friend here get a lot of really nasty and/or dismissive messages in response to this, and I just wanted to say, as a Jewish person myself, it’s really concerning how defensive a lot of people get over legitimate concern and criticism of a show and the fanbase it’s courting (unintentionally or not). As I’ve said here https://punkcynder.tumblr.com/post/614438326848634880/anyway @punkcynder is specifically talking about how the show “dog-whistling”. That specifically implies that the fanbase ISN’T all nazis! Dog-whistling means signalling to a specific group of people without attracting the awareness of everyone else. (This is a basic description. More info about the term here https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/dog-whistle-political-meaning)
Yes, it’s absolutely true that nazis will interpret media in bad faith to try and recruit, but in the case of Beastars, I would argue that a lot of these hate-groups don’t necessarily have to twist the in-universe rhetoric and overall narrative that hard to apply it to real life politics like this. This is a legitimate concern that my friend expressed and that I, and others I’ve talked to, agree with. The extent to which I, and others, have seen these issues ignored by the fandom is frankly worrying.
Again, nobody here is accusing the fandom of being all nazis, or of any fan of the show personally being a white supremacist just for liking it, but @punkcynder is expressing completely legitimate and understandable frustration at seeing these very heavy themes in Beastars mishandled, to the point where real life hate-groups feel their perspective being validated, and the fanbase at large seeming to ignore it. I know some hardcore fans might feel attacked because these are heavy accusations, but please don’t take criticism towards a piece of media you enjoy personally. It’s really important to be critical of what you consume.
The ways Beastars handles its very heavy topics really is damaging, and people who are hurt by the messages it ends up sending aren’t obligated to be polite about it.
As a final note, I’ve seen a lot of messages accusing @punkcynder of speaking over Jewish people, but I, and other Jewish people, have been expressing these concerns as well, and it’s worth noting the issues brought up here also affect more people than just Jewish people. (more than just white Jewish people in particular)
Hey if yalls first reaction to someone calling a certain media shitty and bigoted is to immediately go “IM NOT A SHITTY PERSON STOP MAKING X POLITICAL” congrats! You are one of the shitty fans. Especially those of you pulling the jew card to tell a person of color to shut up on racism and antisemitism when op worked with jewish people who were both white and not to point out its problems. Stories use allegories to make them more relatable to a target audience. Beastars uses allegories to promote white supremacy and antisemitism and because of that maybe ask yourself why you want to defend it so badly. Taking it out on someone who literally just asked for space is really undignified when he literally did not tell any of you to stop consuming it. You can go and enjoy your damn profash propaganda in peace just maybe leave people alone if they want to be over it.
