This is my favorite book. I would love to live in Bag End, and have a smoke sesh with Gandalf ♥
That period between Aragorn's marriage and the Elves leaving Middle-earth must have been absolutely wild for the scribes, librarians, historians and archivists of Minas Tirith, because you suddenly have the people of Rivendell, who are packing, graciously sending for you to quickly transcribe the texts they're taking with them so the knowledge is not lost from mortals, but also just gifting you tons of priceless manuscripts because they have more than one edition of the same thing, or because they're sure there are many more in the West, and there's obviously no need to take 20 copies of Rumil's Ainulindalë with them.
And on the other hand, everyone who knew him is certain Finrod has been pestering every single new arrival in Valinor for information about Men, and you're Faramir, and Elrond asks you for a favour and is like, "Galadriel wants to collect as much information about your cultures and history as she can for her brother; do you think you could find anything of interest in Minas Tirith?", and you're like "The Lady of the Golden Wood....???? Fi-nrod Edenn-il???", of course you'll butcher the job, this is too much, but ultimately you just may have prepared a dossier for the greatest hero of the First Age and you have to lie down for a moment.
Eowyn is finished, and my Lavender and LOTR series is officially a series!

I'd argue the premise here; Tuor didn't get an "immortality exception," Tuor turned into an elf.
But in after days it was sung that Tuor alone of mortal Men was numbered among the elder race, and was joined with the Noldor, whom he loved; and his fate is sundered from the fate of Men.
Emphasis mine.
That's not "you're a man, but have an immortality exception," that's "you are literally no longer a man, you are an elf, and one of things elves are is immortal."
And the reason Tuor gets this and Beren doesn't is... I'm gonna lay down a marker. Even if Beren were offered such a deal, Beren would turn it down flat, just like Elros did when he got the "elf or man" deal.
Beren and Luthien received a different deal. It's framed as a great tragedy, because in-universe the Quenta Silmarillion was written by elves, but Luthien was given a gift much greater than Tuor's; she received death, the Gift of Men, "which as Time wears even the Powers shall envy."
Luthien and Beren got the better deal. The Silmarillion is real clear that the Gift of Men, where they leave this vale of tears and go dwell with Iluvatar beyond time, is the better deal, that the immortality the elves have is in many ways a ball and chain. You could argue "well, that's bullshit, that's Tolkien's Catholicism talking" but that is kind of in the text.
Wait, it got better.
He does this a lot, to my deep surprise in undergrad:
For reference, the reason nobody likes this book and you can press tofu with it is that it’s about 1600 pages long.
It’s also, by all accounts, the origin of Cousin Throckmorton
You know, it makes perfect sense that the guy who would amuse himself by going around Twitter as above would also have come up with the skateboarding cousin Throckmorton for a word problem.
Like it totally follows.
Reblog if you can speak, read, or at least kinda communicate in more than one language.

So, Tolkien fans, what are we doing for Farawyn Day? On March 20th, Faramir meets Éowyn in the Houses of Healing. They deserve a celebration, if you ask me. Farawyn Nation, rise up!
