i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit

ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like

with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing

is it too much to ask

gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that

This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

thanks this is super helpful! /gen

Someone has probably already asked you this but do you have any tips on studying/understanding perspective? I keep trying to find resources to learn but none of them really stick or are actually useful

so I'm hoping that your issue isn't just figuring out the difference between 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point perspective and how it works, because there are tons and tons of resources available for that, and I'm guessing what people tend to get tripped up on is what you're supposed to be doing with your grid.

I'm definitely far from being an expert on understanding perspective, but I'll share some of the things that helped ME finally Get It.

Things like eye level and different camera angles can be a GREAT tool to use when doing a comic or storyboard between multiple characters of different heights!! I actually drew an example of this exact thing for a friend about a month ago (I used adventure time characters bc they're easy to draw and have a good height variety):

You can use camera angles like this to add variety to your shots, and even use it to help convey something emotional (using a down-shot on a character to show that they FEEL small, use an up-shot on a character to make them look more intimidating, etc etc)

hope this helps!

Over the garden wall headcanon/theory

(warning spoilers!)

now that its done airing I can post my thoughts about the whole “it was all a dream” ending, which doesnt hold too much water for me, Greg still has the bell he stole from Aunty Whispers, ect. It’s definitely meant to have dream-like quality and make you feel like you’re coming out of one but; Greg and Wirt basically find themselves there by nearly drowning, and get out by coming to and saving themselves.

and one of the first places they find is pottsfield, where its all dancing skeletons in pumpkin suits. one of the villagers gets confused because Wirt seemes “too early” and “not ready to join them just yet” they’re very confused at the idea of anyone leaving, and when the kids DO leave the giant pumpkin is sure they’ll join them someday. it’s also where woodsman told them to go, it kinda leads me to believe that The Unknown, rather than being a dream world, is a kind of limbo, a land between life and death. It’d explain why the Beast just kinda expects there to be lost souls for his evil plans.

If Greg and Wirt hadn’t overcome the Beast they would have drowned in that river is what I think anyway.

Yep you’re exactly right. “The Unknown” is definitely limbo. A form of limbo. It reflects Wirts interests and people who once resided in the town Wirt lives in (Quincy Endicott’s gave is clearly show in the graveyard, for example) so The Unknown may even be a limbo version of the town/immediate area, harboring spirits and places from times long past, but most notably The Unknown serves as a proving ground for Wirt. He overcomes many of this fears, his anxiety, his depression over his absent father, he even works through his misguided resentment of Gregory in the Unknown, and his defeat of his fears and his apathy allows him to overcome death (as represented by the Beast)

So really The Unknown serves as a coming of age trial for Wirt, he just happens to travel into the Unknown on Halloween night (where the veil between the real world and the spirit world is most thin) through a near death experience after dodging the train and nearly drowning.

my favorite non-romantic trope is "adult begrudgingly becomes a mentor or guardian to a kid and accidentally gets attached to them". usually the adult has sketchy advice and possibly is considered a "loser"

I JUST NOTICED HOW TOOTHLESS ALWAYS - ALWAYS - RETRACTS HIS TEETH WHEN HE’S WITH HICCUP BUT HIS TEETH ARE OUT ALMOST EVERY OTHER TIME

AND IT JUST MADE ME SAD BC

HE’S BEING TOOTHLESS FOR HICCUP. HE’S HICCUP’S TOOTHLESS.

I CAN’T

In that gifset going around from the reels where hiccup is saying I wont leave you, you can see toothlesss teeth retract every time he gains a bit of his conciousness back.

The same thing happens in the actual scene too. It’s a great detail and it’s going to make me cry harder every time I watch that scene gosh darn it
