100...99...98...95

‘Damn it’ he thought

“Try counting James start from 100 and just count backwards it may help calm you down.”

That was Wednesday. Today, Monday after 6 days of his therapist counting idea it did absolutely nothing for him. He would try and count but his mind kept jumping around. He would be at a number and suddenly his mind blank and he would think about how he was supposed to take out the trash. Or how he hadn’t ate dinner and it was almost 6:45 at night. His next option the last option the only one he could think about was going to get coffee at his favorite coffee shop a few blocks away.

‘You walk you get coffee medium black coffee one sugar, hand the cashier the money. Step to the side grab the coffee after you hear your name and leave.’ He attempted to tell himself

Another method that his therapist had told him was try to try and talk to himself. To try and get inside his own head and put a stop to it. Or as she liked to imagine ‘pretend that your an eraser and the chalkboard is your mind and just erase it all away.’ That has never worked for him. Before he realized it he arrived at the coffee shop taking one final deep breath he opened the door and began to look around. Once he began to look he saw one girl in the corner mumbling, some adult man yelling a some guy about how he should have sent an email and the lonely barista reading her book waiting for her next customer.

Stepping up to the counter he asked “Hi uh- can I have a small... no uh medium..” he stopped for a second beginning to panic. “Sorry can I have a medium black coffee?” He finally got out

“Of course! That will be $5.00.” She politely responded

Finally he handed her the money stepped to the side just as he had planned and grabbed his coffee after she had set it down sending her a bright smile.

Normally Bucky would immediately leave the shop but the girl to the far left mumbling caught his eye. He began to hear numbers... “56, 55,54, 53, 49....” she stopped

The frustration on her face beginning to form. Then he began to hear he slight mumbles again “52, 51, 50...” She began to fumble again when Bucky who was in the same position just a bit ago decided to walk over.

“Uh hi I-“ he began to say

“If you want to ask me out you can just leave now.” The girl mumbled out

“No, I heard your counting and well my therapist recommended that to me and I struggle to… I’m just wondering how you can just well do it so greatly. Your great.” Realizing what he said makes little to no sense he facepalmed

After a slight giggle she pulled out the chair next to her motioning for him to sit next to her. Hesitantly Bucky sat down accepting her invitation.

“I’m sorry I had well snapped at you. Most guys come in here fresh off there night shift desk job looking for some caffeine.” She apologized scratching the corner of her eye pulling her hand back quickly

“It’s alright really most people don’t even want me to sit.” He admitted “Well...

“Why wouldn’t they want you to sit you seem nice.” She interrupted

“Well I’m James Barnes nice to meet you. My friends call me Bucky.” He answered grabbing his coffee expecting a bad reaction getting ready to leave

“I’m Kelly.” She responds calmly

“I well I didn’t intend to stay here but I was wondering do you want to go on a walk around the park with me?” He questioned

“I mean yeah that sounds nice if I stay I will probably just keep counting so yeah that sounds nice.” She responded with a smile

The two walked in a silence both of them there minds racing trying to figure out what to say to the other. Once they reached the park they both let out a sigh of relief at the same time.

“Are you ok?” They both began you ask at the same time. Bucky then motioned for her to continue first

“Sorry I was just happy to see there wasn’t a ton of people here and by a ton a mean a single person.” She smile

Slowly Bucky smiled and nodded in agreement “The whole people thing have been a lot since Hy... hospital..” he trailed off

Slowly she reached out to put her hand on top of his at first his hand twitched not used to contact. After a slow breath out from her she began “11 years ago I was walking home when they took me..” after pulling up her sleeve showing the Hydra marking tattooed into her arm

After Bucky saw the marking he knew she was serious. It may have been a rare occasion only happening once or twice but some people would pretend they were from Hydra. The people who said that normally would just be trying to crack a joke but it always scared him a bit.

“After you escaped in DC they had dedicated most of there resources on trying to find you. Where I was there was only about 100 or so guards. Minimum security. After everything I know it’s weird but I wanted to thank you. Without you I would have never made it out.” She admitted waiting for his reaction

Slowly a small grin creeped up on Bucky’s face knowing at least one person didn’t care about him being the former Winter Solider and maybe he could live a sorta normal life.

To the girl in Spanish class today that told me that you can only have she/her and he/him pronouns. I hope both sides pillow is hot, your phone charger works only at one angle. Also the fact you got multiple people to agree with you I hope your pillow is extra hot.

I love all you guys and your all valid no matter what pronouns you use 💕 :)

Good night.

I think my favourite thing about books is how they shape us. Your book history is uniquely your own, no one else in the world has read the all the same books at the exact same times of their lives as you have, and all those books have changed you so intrinsically that you couldn’t erase their influence on you anymore then you could change your DNA.
