Writeblr re-introduction (again)

It’s been a while since I introduced myself, and since i’ve recently gained a few new followers, and I’ve started a new WIP, it feels like an appropriate time.

About the writer:

I have been around writeblr for a few years now, and have been casually writing for a bit over 10 years. I mostly write scifi-fantasy stories, with the occasional literary short story thrown in for variety.

I also make art, sew, embroider and read which i post about every now and again.

I live in Australia (forgive the posting hours), which shapes a lot of the settings i like to write I. I have a cat and I never drink enough water.

About the writing:

I have just started a new story, that is still forming as I write. I don’t have a title yet.

It follows two young adults who live in a world where magic and magical education, and social status go hand in hand. One comes from wealth, and has never completed a successful spell in his life - the other grew up without means but seems to have a natural talent for the impossible.

when they meet, they form an uneasy alliance, as each learns about the others world.

they might pull off a heist or something. I don’t know yet.

Other things

I love tag games. tag away!

also love getting asks, as we all do

If you want to see photos of my cat I will show them to you. her name is Quill.

I’m around a lot at the moment but history shows that can change quickly. bare with me if i disappear off the face of the planet - it probably means I’m not able to write.

I love audio drama podcasts! If you love them too we should be friends and please send any recommendations. I have been out of touch with that community as I’ve been re-listening to my favourites, but I’m ready for new stories.

writeblr intro

hi!! i have never done one of these but i want to start using this blog more so here we go. i’m soren, my pronouns are they/he/it, and i’m 19. i’m a writer (obviously) but also a biologist, artist, and musician :-) my current wip has been sitting on the backburner for a while and i’m hoping that being more active in the writing community here will help me be more inspired to work on a new draft because i don’t have many writer friends </3 you can expect me to post about the writing process, worldbuilding and character tidbits from my own wip, and whatever else comes to mind along the way.

i mostly read and write sci-fi and fantasy but i’ll read a little bit of everything, especially if it’s queer. i particularly love queer found family, sci-fi stories that are really just fantasy set in space, and just about anything involving robots.

my current wip is uhh still in need of a title but it does have a first draft! it follows the story of spaceship captain scarlet callaghan, who gets dragged into a dangerous mission along with her ragtag crew and, unfortunately, the one person who she hates most in the entire galaxy. i’m planning to work on fleshing out my worldbuilding and characters this summer and then start on a second draft sometime soon!

thanks for reading!! feel free to chat with me about book recs, writing stuff, or literally anything. i’m friendly i promise

(also i follow from my main, stellar-love!)

Not every day has to count. Some days are for repairing, resting, mourning. You don't have to perform every day. Some days are for doing nothing. For sleeping all day or being on your phone. Relaxing is ok, allowed and encouraged. Do what you need to do.

it’s been AGES since i’ve done one of these so: writeblr! what are we working on?

reblog this with your elevator pitch (and aesthetics/moodboards if you feel like it), link your WIP intros or relevant excerpts you’d like boosted, and i’ll do my damnedest to reblog everybody who responds in the next few days.

(P.S. bonus points if you tell me your favourite thing about it)

I'm writing a graphic short story script based on one of my wipes (Salt & Starships) that takes place when one of the characters was a teenager (because it's for uni and it has to be a children's or YA graphic narrative).

It follows Adal, who is Genesis's flatmate, as he tells the story of the time he met the empress of the galaxy on a school field trip.

I wrote a plan based on Gabriel Urbina's 10 step writing outline today and hopefully will have a first draft done by the end of the day!

Adal is one of my favourite character's from Salt & Starships because he's just a guy trying to get his PHD done while chaos happens around him. It's lovely to spend a bit more time with him than I get to do in the novel.

see what people just don't understand is that writing's demanding it's mentally challenging and it's a bore, it's such a chore, to sit in a room by your self oh my goddd I haaate it. and you're trying to FIND an opening LINE or brilliant IDEA and you're pacing the floor, and hoping for, just, a bit of divine intervention. that one little nugget, that one little spark, then eureka, you find it, you're ready to start! so now you can write! right? WRONG! you're not even close you remember that dammit your play's gotta be in iambic pentameter!!! so you write down a word but it's not the right word so you try a new word but you hate the new word and you need a good word but you can't find the word and where is it what is it where is wha is akjehjwejkhbesafkjb AAAAH!

The older I get, and the more on fire the world seems to be the more I feel comforted and SEEN by Sir Terry Pratchett and Discworld.

Not because all the books are inherently comfortable so much as because they feel like someone taking you by the hand and saying; “I know. I’m just as angry about this bullshit. But we can hold hands. But the sun still rises. But hope is still important. Hope wears steel toed boots and smiles with pink and bloody teeth and will make you laugh and will make you cry. It’s not okay. But we’re in the shit together, and some day it’s gonna be less shit.”

This got away from me.

What I’m saying is, I’ve got a shovel.

Well put.

Sam Reich is the only good CEO because he gets all his evil impulses out by being a dastardly mustache-twirling villain on his little game show, instead of getting into union busting or something

This is why it's important to know exactly what kind of enrichment is appropriate to each person's enclosure. You can cackle menacingly while knitting or woodworking, but it's really better with an audience.

Israel doing well in Eurovision is a completely predictable result of the boycott. The people who are watching & voting in Eurovision are now at best willfully ignorant and apathetic and at worst actively pro-Israel, meaning there will be a disproportionate amount of people willing to vote for Israel and even people voting for them because of the boycott.

But saying that means that boycotting Eurovision was the wrong call completely misses the point of the boycott. The point is not "Israel should not win Eurovision", it is "Israel should not be allowed to compete in the first place". The point of the boycott is not to give the EBU views or money, so if you've been boycotting... don't give them money or legitimacy by voting for someone tomorrow to prevent Israel from winning. If Israel does win, that does not mean boycotting failed; it only further delegitimizes the competition and confirms we should burn the whole thing down.
